Launched by Sonja of A Bookshelf Full Of Sunshine, continued by FiktiveWelten with a new logo. The blog action is for lively communication between bloggers, a good network, and should be fun. Duration of the question: Friday to Thursday. Rules. No registration required. This week the FF is all about using a rating system. How we feel about it if it is really necessary, and why some of us bloggers might not like it at all. You want to know how I think about it? Then keep reading *smile*

A question I strongly believe will divide people. And which will show that everyone has another opinion about it. Some use it in what form ever and others don´t like it at all.

Well, I use one since I am reviewing books. And since every forum or shop use them as well, I am kind of used to use them. It never occurred to me, that I could simply leave them out of my reviews. When I started being active as a reviewer I was asked to put a rating into my text. Actually, I never questioned it. It seemed the perfect way to give the interested reader quick and short info before reading my review. And when I started my blog, I used a rating system as well. But not with stars, I use lashes. Everyone in the blogger-sphere seemed to use stars, no matter what color or size or form, and I looked at my doll and thought, why not use lashes?

To be honest, when I read a review, no matter where, and I can´t find a rating, I am kind of lost. Yes, I can guess from the text written as review, what the person thought about the book, but without a rating, I am always asking myself, well, did he/she not love it, did he/she only write in a nice and decent way about the item but didn´t like it at all and is only not telling it straight forward?

For me, a clear rating is essential. I don´t care if that person would reverse its rating months later or even years later when his/her taste has changed. I think a rating is necessary the moment you are actually writing your review or giving your opinion about something. Because the rating says it loud and clear without any words. I can read the review to it later when I have the time to do it. But the rating upfront can be very helpful, at least to me. I get it, that others might not share it the way I see it. But on the other hand, everyone is free to do as they please, aren´t they?! No one is forced to use a rating system. Well, not entirely. Some systems simply require it. And for me, it doesn´t matter if it is shown in stars, butterflies, lips, the Eifel Tower or like in my case, lashes. Use whatever form you like and prefer, but give me some *smile*

What is your opinion on that? Do you have any at all?

Happy reading & rating

  1. Vi,

"when I read a review, no matter where, and I can´t find a rating, I am kind of lost."

I totally agree with you on this. I did some thoughts on this, too. And after it, I returned to the stars again, but in a modified way.

    Best regards,

    Michael
