Beautiful Player by Christina Lauren

Friday, December 01, 2017
After I had read the first two books of this series about three years ago, I couldn´t wait for the third book being published in Germany and bought this as soon as the original edition was available. The cover somehow reminded me of that, the first had and though I am not much of a fan the green color concerned, this one kind of looks good.

When Hanna Bergstrom receives a lecture from her overprotective brother about neglecting her social life and burying herself in grad school, she´s determined to tackle his implied assignment: get out, make friends, start dating. And who better to turn her into the sultry siren every man wants than her brother´s gorgeous best friend Will Sumner, venture capitalist and unapologetic playboy? Will takes risks for a living, but he´s skeptical about this challenge of Hanna´s … until the wild night his innocently seductive pupil tempts him into bed – and teaches him a thing or two about being with a woman he can´t forget. Now that Hanna´s discovered the power of her own sex appeal, it´s up to Will to prove he´s the only man she´ll ever need.

Thoughts

I have to admit it, that for me, the best book of this series, so far, is still the Beautiful Bastard
But this one here has a charm of its own and I remember, that I was reading it with quite a broad smile on my face.

Hanna has spent almost all her adult years in the lab. It is her passion and where others see only boring stuff, she is thrilled. Her family wants her to have a private life, to meet men or the man whom she can give her love. But Hanna has other plans. She wants to become the dream of all men: sexy, erotic and with the lust to play. She realizes that she can´t do it on her own. She needs a teacher, and where could be a better one than Will Sumner, her brothers best friend? He is a playboy, so no danger there that real feelings would become involved and he likes to play and have fun too.

This novel gives you a hilarious insight into the thoughts and feelings of a woman as well as those of the men´s world. Misinterpretations, exquisite nebulous thoughts from Hanna and relentlessly open talks between Hanna and Will about sexual practices and the one or the other position. Not to mention how the other gender can be best at service for the other while in the vertical or horizontal position. To be short: I sometimes got quite red ears while I burst into laughter during reading others. This was just GREAT! Good, not with the sarcastic and ironic tone that gave me the time of my life while reading Beautiful Bastard, but this novel came as close as none other of this series (and I haven´t read the Beautiful yet.

Hanna is a refreshing na├»ve young woman, who really believes that all her time and talks with Will don´t end up in something steamy and hot. Her believe, that she can learn from him in a totally platonic way is so hilarious and full of fun – you can only admire her for that. She walks through life with an implicitness, feels totally comfortable in her own skin and there is nothing she isn´t confident that she can´t handle.

Will is older, his life experience and what he does for a living give him a different perspective than Hanna has. And that, in combination with Hanna, gets him into situations where he sometimes wonders how he could end up in such.

This was one hell of a ride. Not as good as the first book, but way better than the second. Great dialogues, fantastic scenes and two main figures who teach you a thing or two. If you are a fan of the author duo, or the genre itself, then this is your book, no doubt about that. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

Lauren Billings has a Ph.D. in neuroscience and before she made writing her full-time-job, would spend her days doing nerdy research-type things wearing a lab coat and goggles. She is silly Mommy of two littles, wife to one mountain biking homebrewing scientist, bestie to a shoe-stealer, and an unabashed lover of YA and romance.
Christina Hobbs used to spend her days in a junior high counseling office surrounded by teenagers. These days you´ll probably find her on Tumblr. She is married and absolutely not old enough to be the mom of a 15-year-old (right??), thinks she´s the luckiest person in the world to write books with her best friend and is an unapologetic lover of boy bands and glitter. She also likes to steal Lauren´s shoes.
