One of the many beautiful surprises I received last year. This book you shouldn´t judge by its cover because you will find so much more in this novel. My first Vi Keeland book, but for sure not the last. This book I got by surprise. When I asked for it I never would´ve thought that I would get it. You can imagine my joy when I saw that it was on its way to my place. And it was a joy to read it.

Reese Annesley, young, pretty, ambitious, is experiencing the worst date in her life when she sees him for the first time: Chase Parker. Again, and again her gaze wanders to the incredibly attractive man at the other end of the restaurant. Suddenly he gets up, sits down at Reese´s table, pretending to be old friends and saving her evening. And when she starts her dream job a few weeks later, the company´s CEO is none other than the stranger from the restaurant she could not forget. (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Reese isn´t sure whether to be angry or stunned about the stranger´s words when she hears that she should cut her date some slack. Who is he that he can tell her that she´s making her date nervous? And why is he all of the sudden sitting right next to her at her table and telling stories about a past both never shared? Things get even more exciting when she starts her new job and has to learn that her incredibly handsome stranger is her new boss. Oh boy….

Style
Fast-paced, sometimes very funny, while other pages are darker, and others again are very emotional. In this novel, you´ll find emotions for everyone in a novel that is full of surprises and things you´d never expect to happen. But be warned. If you are a cat lover, this one might be not of your taste. Vi Keeland writes in a soft but blunt tone, her style is open and shows you all kinds of emotions. There isn´t one page where it gets boring or is close to it. Holy moly I was close to tears when I found out why Chase was acting the way he does during one scene and it was so sweet when he tried to make up for it afterward.

Characters
Reese and Chase have both gone through rough and very hard times. Both know what it means to be on the darker side of life. And both know only too well that some things you can´t deal with on your own. But when Chase´s past comes back with overwhelming power and he learns the bitter truth about something he´s done, his reaction is heartbreaking. Not only women obviously decide whether a man is worthy of them or not.

Conclusion
What a wonderful to read a novel. I was very amazed that this wasn´t at all the usual office-romance-kind-of-cheesy-thing you might expect while reading the summary. This book is definitely worth a look and your time.

Happy reading
