Schwesterherz by Kristina Ohlsson

OMG! This was one hell of a fantastic ride. And since there is a second book coming soon (actually not soon enough!) this ride isn´t over yet. Kristina Ohlsson, you´ve got yourself a new fan. This was big entertainment. Good, I admit it, if I would have gone after the cover, I probably wouldn´t have touched it at all. Not to mention reading it. But it fits. And when you read it, you will know why.

✶✶✶✶✶

How do you vindicate a deceased, self-proclaimed killer? A criminal lawyer in Stockholm, Martin Benner sees himself as a man who has it all. Then Bobby T barges into his office one day, demanding his help. Bobby says he´s the brother of Sara Tell, a young woman dubbed `Sara Texas´ by the tabloids after she confessed to five brutal murders some time back – three in Sweden, and two in Texas. Six months ago, she shocked everyone when she escaped from pre-trial custody and leapt off a bridge to her death. But Bobby says she was innocent. He needs Martin´s help to clear her name and to find Sara´s son, Mio, who he says disappeared around the time of her death. As Martin and Lucy, the partner in his firm, delve deeper into the case, their pursuit of the truth takes them across the ocean to Texas, where the pieces of the puzzle slowly fall into place. But before Martin can continue his investigation, he receives some devastating news that turns his world upside down …
Story
Martin lives the life he wants. He has money, a great job, a woman at hand, and a little girl he loves more than anything in the world. When he needs his space from being a loving and caring father, he calls the babysitter or the grandparents and everything is fine. But the moment Bobby steps into his office, demanding that Martin proofs that his sister Sara was innocent, everything changes. The case becomes an obsession and Martin stands all the sudden on the brink to lose it all.

Style
A thriller that will haunt you from the very first page. Martin Benner is an arrogant but great man who knows how to read a woman. Good, not every woman, because with Lucy everything is different. But for Belle, the little cutie, he is the absolutely perfect father. Kristina Ohlsson´s style is clear, decent, and absolutely to the point. There are no long descriptions of the landscape or the figures, but enough to make you see and enough to make you enjoy and get the rest with your own imagination together. I could literally see the stones or the houses, the fog, and the street of the city.

And I loved how she went with her main figure Martin. Oh boy, that man has it all and knows how to use his charm to get what he wants, when he wants and how he wants. But put him beside Belle and he is melting like butter in the sun. In combination with the case he takes, to prove the innocence of a dead woman, this thriller has the right amount of brutality, passion, and a psychological finesse that simply stuns you. You never ask how this or that could be the reason why this or that happened. You just keep reading and reading and in the end, you find a plan behind all this, that is as much cruel as it is simple. Drugs, crime, theft, and a syndicate without any mercy. Kristina Ohlsson digs really deep into a world with double moral standards. If you don´t cooperate with the boss, you´re as good as dead. And if you start to look too close, you are in huge trouble as well.

Characters
Martin Benner is a man who knows exactly what he wants. He became a lawyer to live a life full of money and success. And both he has. Why doing something yourself if you can pay money to get it done? He rather calls a plumber when his mother calls and complains that the basement is underwater then going there himself. No, he isn´t a cold man, he just knows better things to do with his time than doing a job he isn´t really qualified for. And the way he educates little Belle is, at least in my eyes, perfect. Oh, yes, I am in love with that man *smile*

Conclusion
This was the first book by the author that I have read and for sure not the last one. I am absolutely flashed, shocked, and overwhelmed. Read!

Happy reading

Follow Friday #16 – Highlight April 2017

This is a Friday meme hosted by Patricia of FiktiveWelten. Every week she asks a question that you can answer. Everyone who would like to participate, just answer her question, link to her blog, and write a comment under her post to let the others know that you are participating. The entire rules you can find here.

The last time when Patricia had asked “what our reading highlight” had been in the previous month the response had been such a success that it has become a regular one in the Follow Friday meme. It seems like ages that I have posted a Follow Friday post. But no matter how difficult things were or still are, there is still time to enjoy a book.

And my April-Highlight is without any doubt:

True North – Wo auch immer du bist by Sarina Bowen.

The original title is Bittersweet and even though I don´t know why the German publisher didn´t use that title, I am absolutely thrilled that I was among those few who were allowed to read it upfront before its actual release day (review will follow). And what can I say? I read it within one night and had the time of my life - so to speak. The plot is great, the characters are well created and the novel itself is absolutely hilarious and fantastic written.

What was your reading highlight during April?

Happy reading

Der Prinz Der Elfen by Holly Black

As always, the cover made me curious in the first place. At least the cover of the German edition. But the cover alone doesn´t make a novel good. This book proofs that very well. A great to look at a cover, but a very confusing story that seems to go nowhere. I had my troubles with it and was asking myself at some point during reading if this was a joke.

✶✶✶

Hazel and her brother, Ben, live in Fairfold, where humans and the Folk exist side by side Tourists drive in to see the lush wonders of Faerie and, most wonderful of all, the horned boy. But visitors fail to see the danger. Since they were children, Hazel and Ben have been telling each other stories about the boy in the glass coffin, that he is a prince and they are valiant knights, pretending their prince would be different from the other faeries, the ones who made cruel bargains, lurked in the shadows of trees, and doomed tourists. But as Hazel grows up, she puts aside those stories. Hazel knows the horned boy will never wake. Until one day, he does … As the world turns upside down, Hazel has to become the knight she once pretended to be. But as she´s swept up in new love, with shifting loyalties and fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?
Story
Hazel has secrets. A lot of secrets and all of them are there because she believes that she must protect her brother from the dangers of the world. And exactly that thinking is the reason why she is now facing the biggest troubles of her young life. The horned boy isn´t what he was supposed to be and Jack – well Jack is a completely different story.

Style
Holly Black is known for some pretty, good fantasy and well-written books. At least that was my impression when I read some things about her. I can´t share that opinion. All the time I was looking for something that I couldn´t find. So, I guess it simply wasn´t there. At least not for me. No doubt, her fantasy is beautiful and she obviously had some crazy stuff she wanted to write about. But I saw nothing but a confusing story and scenes where I was wondering what they had to do with the rest. The author´s language is quite simple. And she, no doubt, gives the reader a glimpse of what this book could have been. But in the end, it didn´t get beyond average. Teenagers who assume, but never ask if it is correct what they assume. And that is exactly what gets them into trouble with the Faerie in the first place.

Characters
Hazel has a strong belief, that if she acts like a knight and does what she thinks a knight does, she can handle not only her brother’s destiny but also the destiny of an entire town. How wrong she is with that and what it costs not only her but other families as well, she only sees when it is too late. But I was impressed to see how she changed the moment she started to understand the situation. How she acted then and what she did to change things. She showed a strong will and that she was, despite the very extraordinary way she and her brother were brought up, a young teenager who knows that not everyone got raised the same way as she did.

Conclusion
A great cover does not make the novel it is wrapped around, a great one. So sadly, this book is not really a hit. And I am not sure if I will read another book by the author at all. Sad, very sad. But for fans of the weird and confusing fantasy, this might be a good choice.

Happy reading
