Mit Deinem Letzten Atemzug by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke

Let me be straight with you. Every Breath You Take was disappointing. At least for me. This is not the MHC I know and love. It hurts to say it, but this is one of the few books written by her, I can´t give anything but an average rating. Sad, but this was almost a boring read. And after a few chapters, I couldn´t get rid of the feeling that I´ve read that story already. Hopefully, the next Laurie Moran thriller will be a hit again. This wasn´t. At least not for me.

✶✶✶

A bombastic gala evening in Manhattan ends in disaster. Virginia Wakeling an extremely wealthy widow and a generous patron of the arts falls to the death from the roof of the Metropolitan Museum. Was it murder? Urgently suspicious: her over twenty years younger lover Ivan. But as the police turn it around, they find no evidence against him. Therefore, Laurie Moran is using her TV program “Under Suspicion” to clear the case. She begins to research in the circle of the super-rich family - and soon encounters dark secrets. (a personal translation of the blurb on the dust cover/German edition by ©Vi at Inkvotary).
Story
Laurie Moran usually has her own way, finding a case that fits for her show. Not this time. Her boss wants her to do the story about Virginia Wakeling and if that wouldn´t be enough, he also has the day set already. A rich family, a heritage big enough to cause some fights and a woman who starts living and pays the ultimate price for it: her life.

Style
The first quarter of the book was wonderful to read. No sign that the rest of the novel sounded very familiar and so as if I´ve read it already somewhere else. The main figure Laurie has her little problems with the way how her male moderator of the show is working, but other than that she sees it when a case is worth being on “Under Suspicions”. What this thriller is missing, is the portion of tension, humor, and kind of action that make you literally jump to the next page just to see how things unfold. Not here. Sure, you are turning the pages – to keep reading – but not with the eagerness to find out who the real bad guy is. Because that is after a few chapters clear. At least it was for me. The author follows the same rules, she used to follow in most of her other work. The quiet and palest figure (I don´t tell any name, so no spoiler here) is the evil person and the reasons why are as boring as the rest of the story. Sad, very sad. Because the plot itself is full of tension and potential and if played outright, this would have been a fantastic book. Well …

Characters
What kept this book from total failure was the personal relationship between Laurie and Alex. In here, they are making some magnificent progress, and to watch that, it was well worth reading this thriller.

Laurie changes in a way that was nice to watch. She still loves her late husband and she still cherishes the memories she is having. But she also starts to realize and understand, that she wants happiness and the feeling being loved and not alone, back in her life. Sure, there is her son and her father, and they both love her, and she loves them. But the love of a man who is not her father or son is something else. Her inner conflict and how she turns things around are presented by Mary Higgins Clark in a very sensitive way. If not to say that those scenes were the best in this thriller.

Conclusion
I am sad and very disappointed. The novel reads lukewarm, without big surprises and lacks wit, charm, and catchy dialogues. Either I´ve expected way too much because the other books of this series were a wonderful read or this just wasn´t for me. But judge for yourself. Maybe for you, it is what you are looking for. For me, it wasn´t.

Happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #70 – Searching For Answers

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews / Reading Reality and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #70

From time to time my library offers books for free in the so-called “To give away box” where they put in all the books, they´ve sorted out from their stock for whatever reason. I had to go anyway and bring back some other books and just couldn´t resist going through all the titles in that box. And well, that´s what I brought home *smile*

Sunday Post #27

We finally got the info, that our river is poison-free again. At least they can´t measure any substance in the water anymore. I am very happy with the way, how our officials were handling the situation and still do. Though it is a strange feeling and view that you can´t spot any fish in the water, the wild ducks are obviously well and fine. At least one good thing.

You might have noticed, that it was a bit quiet on my blog lately. I didn´t post many reviews or other posts and wasn´t very active in the blogger community. Well, I am not as productive anymore as I used to be. A feeling I don´t like at all.

I wish I could say that I am still suffering from the spring tiredness, but I fear that´s only half the truth. Don´t know if thinking about my life in general, my past and all the other things that are going on in my mind are so good right now. But that´s what I am doing. I hate it, that I am apparently not able to change everything that needs to be changed. While I can do some changes very easily, others cost a lot of self-control and strength to even start them and keep them. We´ll see how things go.

Elias & Laia-In Den Fängen Der Finsternis by Sabaa Tahir

A Reaper at the Gates is written gently as silk and yet so powerful. Good, in this case, I prefer the German cover over the original one, but what matters the most is the story itself. And that one was WOW! Good, it took me a while to get into the story, to understand all the back and forth during the first few chapters, but then … holy moly! It was wonderful to dive back into the novel and story of Elias and Laia. Although I was not happy with the end.

The world will burn. But she will rise from the ashes. The martial empire is on the brink: Emperor Marcus covers the land with the blood of the innocent, while Blood Shrike Helena tries to protect them. Far to the east, Laia knows she has to stop the Nightbringer, and that without Elias. He is bound as a Soul Catcher to the land between the living and the dead. The spiritual realm. Damned to serve unconditionally – even if it means abandoning the woman he loves. Their fate is linked. And they all fight against an ancient power whose destructive power they all underestimate … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary).
Story
Laia wants to save her people from the bloody war the emperor Marcus is leading against the innocent. Helena, the emperors´ Blood Shrike tries to keep her sister from his brutal wrath and Elias faces some trouble as a Soul Catcher. And while cities burn to ashes in the downfall of the empire, Laia learns the bitter truth about her mother.

Style
I don´t know how Sabaa Tahir does it or where she finds her inspiration but reading A Reaper at the Gates was like watching a dream in which Laia plays the main part. The writing style smooth as silk,  words like pearls, and the action as bloody as someone can imagine.

What a great combination.

Yes, there are pages where the story kind of splatters to herself, and I read details and things I wasn´t really interested in, but the rest? One heck of a bloody, cruel, and yet very sensitive story that answers many questions but leaves others unanswered.

Characters
Laia needs to find a way to save her people and others from the emperor’s bloody war. To do that, she needs answers. But every time she comes close to one, someone seems to do everything within their power to keep her from getting it. And without Elias, Laia has no other choice but to use her magic and to do things, she´d never thought she´d do. Her strength, her will, and the way how she acts change during the ongoing story. That was very impressive. She literally grows-up in front of the reader´s eye and in the end, you know that nothing will be the same for her.

Conclusion
This was one bloody, emotional, and action-filled novel. I did not like the end, and was, after reading it, sad, angry, and confused. So, yes, I got caught emotionally in the best way a book is able to. If you are no fan of the author and this series yet, see this as a highly recommended novel.

Zusammen Wie Schwestern by Gayle Forman

This novel, Sisters in Sanity, surprised me. I expected everything, but not what I got. Emotions, passion, strength, and the strong will of a teenager who fights for who she is and how she became what she is. You shouldn´t judge this novel by its cover. At least not the one, the German edition has.

The 16-year-old Brit Hemphill doesn´t know who she can trust. Convinced that she can not be tamed otherwise, her father has deported her to Red Rock – a so-called treatment facility for troubled girls. Where the therapy consists of insulting and punishing and favoring those girls who talk badly about the others. But then Brit meets V, Bebe, Martha, and Cassie – four girls who keep her from going over the edge. And together they have the chance to stand up to the grim reality of Red Rock and bravely go their own way.
Story
Brit was raised by a very free-spirited mother and a father who loved his girls over the moon and back. But when her mother disappears and her father marries again it turns out that the way how Brit´s personality has developed is far from what her new family, her father on top, can handle. The secret her father is keeping from her is throwing a dark shadow over everything. And the fear, he can´t tell her, brings her to a place where she gets help in a way, she´d never expected.

Style
I like the soft, sensitive way Gayle Forman uses to write about the most delicate things in a teenager’s life. Emotions. There is a special magic in her words, although I have to admit that I could have thrown Brits dad at some point against a wall. For more than ten years he raised his daughter to be an individual girl, to follow her passion, and to see the world from a different perspective. And Brit does exactly that. Good, her style isn´t what others would call normal – but what exactly is NORMAL? And all of a sudden, her father starts criticizing exactly THAT! The conflict that occurs the moment a stepmother stands on their doorstep shows that women can be real bitches. Everything that was good and right the way it was, now isn´t right and good anymore. And when teenage hormones kick in and life seems to be one hell of a bad place with no one who understands you, life becomes a living hell.

For both sides.

And at Red Rock, only one thing is the goal. Fear. Big Brother is watching you. Wrong. Big Brother´s only in your head. Playing with your fear means nothing if the control others gain over you is only because you let them get it.

Characters
It took me a while, to get behind Brit´s figure. She discovers that playing in a band means everything to her. It is her world. A world that happens mostly late at night. Where she is supposed to lay in bed, sleeping. Making music, writing songs, and performing them keeps her away from the edge. But her father fears that the way he has raised his daughter over the years has become a threat. That she isn´t herself anymore. And the nightmare begins. I was not happy with the way how Brit´s father was created. The moment Brit´s mother is gone, he changes completely. And not everything of that change can be explained by her mother´s absence. He suddenly has the need to reverse everything he taught his little girl and make her a completely new person. Not working.

Conclusion
If you keep reading this book all the way through, you will be rewarded with a very emotional and fitting end. Sisters in Sanity shows you strength, confidence, friendship, loyalty, and the will to live your life and to go your own way. Good, sometimes I had the feeling that what I read wasn´t new to me. But all in all, I was hooked. And that end. Holy heck!

Waiting On Wednesday #93 – Children Of Virtue And Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

Her eyes. OMG! How can a figure have such eyes? To be honest, I LOVE this cover even more. And hopefully, the story behind it is as thrilling and haunting as the other one. Although I am not sure if the author will be capable of topping it. Yes, I am a fan of book one. But I also understand if someone is or was not.

You can imagine my excitement when I saw the new cover on Twitter. A change of plans was in order with my WoW-post only a few hours away.

Stacking The Shelves #69

I was a good girl this week. Bought NO books *YAY*. But my week was not bookless at all. Today two RC´s arrived and caught me by surprise. And I am a bit shocked, that I have not published any reviews the past week. As usual, I display on the left side, the German cover, on the right, the English cover.

Sunday Post #26

About ten days ago, I took the picture below, not knowing, that only a few days later our town´s little river would be a deadly and dangerous place. At first, I thought it is a bad joke because I couldn´t see anything unusual. Turns out we´ve got lucky. Only a few miles down the river from where I live, some poison liquid (a mixture of some chemical stuff) got into the water and there is apparently strong suspicion (no evidence yet!) that one of the local companies is the reason why tons of fish had to die. Investigations are ongoing.

The area where I live is mostly used by dog walkers or kids because they all can easily access the river, watch frogs, ducks, and fish in their natural habitat and stretch their legs.

Sometimes you can see the ducks flying around. There is no fence, no cage, or whatsoever. It is an amazing feeling when you are walking there and suddenly you realize there is a duck only a few inches away sitting in the green grass right next to your feet. The colors they have - gorgeous.

Thankfully the ducks who live in the area close to my place, are not among the dead animals. But alone the thought, that tons of fish are dead now, because of the poison that got into the water – Grrrrrr! It will take years of recovery to get that natural habitat back to where it was until a few days ago. Could scream!
