All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

Sweet magnetic something on the dashboard! This novel is one fantastic read; and that without using loud tones or an aggressive language. And after I´ve read some pages, I understood completely, why it was the most stolen item on the book fair 2015 here in Germany. Yep, you´ve read that right. Fame with two sides – so to speak. Big emotions, a magnificent plot and characters so phenomenal and convincing - that is All In.  At first, I wasn´t that convinced that this book would be really something for me, ´cause I am usually not that much of a fan when it comes to Scandinavian writers and novels. A thriller from one or the other is something else, but novels? Not if I can avoid it. But this one here; is fabulous, just soooooo fabulous. As I call it: this is the big picture - like sitting in a cinema and watching the movie on the big screen – know what I mean?

Trust is the most precious commodity of all. In the cutthroat world of Sweden´s financial elite, no one knows that better than corporate raider David Hammar. Ruthless, Notorious, Unstoppable. He´s out to hijack the ultimate prize, Investum. After years of planning, all the players are in place; he needs just one member of the aristocratic owning family on his side – Natalia De la Grip. Elegant, brilliant, driven to succeed in a man´s world, Natalia is curious about David´s unexpected invitation to lunch. Everyone knows that he is rich, dangerous, unethical; she soon discovers he is also deeply scarred. The attraction between these two is impossible, but the long Swedish nights unfold an affair that will bring to light shocking secrets, forever alter a family, and force both Natalia and David to confront their innermost fears and desires.
Story
The plot is about a young woman called Natalia De la Grip and her struggle, or better-said fight, with her family in general and her father in particular. Women are not very highly valued in the Scandinavian society; at least not in this novel. They have to look pretty, to smile, to stand by their husband’s side and to take care of things like organizing a garden party, keeping the household alright and give birth to male heirs. Yes, life is pretty much straightforward and boring like hell for a woman like Natalia. She wants to prove that she is much more than only a beautiful looking shell. And that she´s smart as hell. And she IS smart.

Style
Simona Ahrnstedt´s writing style is perfect, to the point and there isn´t one page where you think: well I already expected that to happen. All In is full of unexpected twists and turns shows figures that are able to grow and a part of society is shown, wow! Which brought me to the question: is the Swedish society really that old-fashioned? Are women seriously that worthless to a certain kind of class? Or was it only a writing element that Simona Ahrnstedt needed to give her protagonist Natalia, as kind of a reason for what she did and was about to do?

Anyway, what I loved about this novel was the fact, that the author has a huge and diversified treasury of words. Okay towards the end I was wincing a little bit over two lines, which were a bit kitschy, but otherwise, this was the perfect novel for me. And those hot and steamy scenes: delicious. David seems to be the kind of man who likes to have sex in a bit different way without being too … well, let´s leave it there. Read the book and you know what I mean. Anyways a balcony is from now on a different thing for me.

Characters
Simona Ahrnstedt created opposed characters in this plot, brings with their different character traits and the way how they act a fire into the game between them, that couldn´t have been any more compelling. At some point you think, Natalia is a “but” women. Whenever she is in a conversation with her family, no matter if that´s her mother, father or her eldest brother, her sentences start with a “but” and then she stops and gives up. After I´ve read that for the umpteenth time I started to wonder. She is such a strong female when it comes to her job, she knows exactly what she wants and how she wants it, but when it comes to her family? She literally gives up. On the other hand, she can´t stop starting a discussion or at least a conversation whenever the topic is something she´s interested in.

All In shows the world of the rich and goes behind the façade. You see the glittering sparkle cruelty, tragedy, hate and lurking revenge. Told in an impressive and absolutely entertaining way where it becomes soon quite clear to the reader that the author is about to unfold things that you wouldn´t even dare to dream about. There is an undertone, not much, but enough to make it totally clear that not everything, that people do, is ok and that revenge is one thing, but forgiveness another.

David is one picture of a man – oh yes Ladies, believe me, you don´t want to kick him off of your bed. And usually, you don´t get to see that many male protagonists who are able to change and to re-think their life or why they do what they do. David does. And how he does it, is remarkable, beautiful and great at the same time. He learns to see things from a different angle, starts to scrutinize his plans without appearing week. Yes, he is ruthless, and yes, he ruins other men´s lives and marriages, but not without a damn good reason. Yes, he has some moral principles, but when it comes to the point to get what he wants, they are nonexistent.

Natalia seems to be fragile, delicate and determined to do everything to get her father´s pride, respect, and recognition. And her father?; he is an old patriarch who really believes that only his wisdom and what he knows about the world and his business is right and good. So for him, Natalia can do whatever she wants – it is never good enough nor does it change his picture of women. They have to look beautiful, stand by their men and otherwise do some charity or talk about whatever woman talk. But in the financial world? No space for them. Point. When Natalia has to learn that her place in the De la Grip family, her role in it is not what she always thought, things start to make sense all of a sudden.

Conclusion
The only thing that bothered me a bit, besides the two kitschy lines I mentioned earlier, was, that every woman in this novel seemed to be a blond one. Blonde with curls, blonde with plain hair, blondes with long hair, and blondes with short hair … I guess you get the picture, don´t you? Don´t get me wrong, I´ve got nothing to say against the blonde, a nice hair color, but every female character a blonde one? Seriously? But ok, I can live with that, as long as I get another great story about the De la Grip siblings in the second book of this trilogy - which will hopefully be in April 2016.

Happy reading

News - Great Joy!

This Saturday morning turned out to be one of the most pleasurable ones that I had in months. I went into town to get a few things done, walked into our local book store, and what do I find? The best part of my conclusion for "The Year I Met You" was printed on the back of the German edition - how great is that?! I was so stunned, so surprised and when the joy finally kicked in and I realized what I just read there on the back of this book and that the name of the German literature website Leser-Welt was written right (you have no idea how many times they forget to put that hyphen between those two words!), I couldn´t resist and had to take this picture. Understandable, isn´t it?!

It doesn´t happen very often, that I find a conclusion from my book reviews on that particular book, so this made a free and sunny day even brighter and happier. And the funny thing is, one of my team members from Leser-Welt found a few days ago on a cooking website the banner ad of this book. And there was my conclusion shown too. I was already full of joy when I saw that, ´cause it´s always great to see that your work gets somehow valued. But, to be honest, it is one thing to hear it or get it shown from someone else, but a totally different number to see my conclusion life and for real on the physical book myself - that was really quite special.

For all those, who can´t read it, my conclusion there in the picture says:

An incredibly beautiful novel, in which life holds the best lessons.

Waiting On Wednesday #3 – Bay Of Sighs by Nora Roberts

is a weekly event hosted by Jill of Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. I am sneaking around Bay of Sighs for quite some time now. Not that I was thinking about whether to read it or not – that´s out of the question. No, my consideration was about the cover. I like to have books of a series or trilogy in the same style and edition. And besides that, I, frankly said, don´t like the cover the other publisher created, that much.  Especially not after I´ve seen what the author posted on her FB page.  So now I am eagerly waiting for the day of its arrival and hope that´ll be a few days after it´s published.

Bay Of Sighs
Author Nora Roberts
The Guardians Trilogy #2
Publishing Date June 14, 2016
Publisher Berkley
Format Hardcover
Goodreads

To celebrate the rise of their new queen, three goddesses of the moon created three stars, one of fire, one of ice, one of water. But then they fall from the sky, putting the fate of all worlds in danger. And now three women and three men join forces to pick up the pieces… Mermaid Annika is from the sea, and it is there she must return after her quest to find the stars. New to this world, her purity and beauty are nothing less than breathtaking, along with her graceful athleticism, as her five new friends discover when they retrieved the fire star. Now, through space and time, traveler Sawyer King has brought the guardians to the island of Capri, where the water star is hidden. And as he watches Annika in her element, he finds himself drawn to her joyful spirit. But Sawyer knows that if he allows her into his heart, no compass could ever guide him back to solid ground…. And in the darkness, their enemy broods. She lost one star to the guardians, but there is still time for blood to be spilled – the mermaid´s in the water and the traveler´s on the land. For she has forged a dangerous new weapon. Something deadly and unpredictable. Something human.

Stacking The Shelves #4

is hosted by Tynga´s Reviews and is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical stores or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks!

Over the past week, I had a few great opportunities to get some books really low priced, and so I can add now those to my private library too. Yes, you´ve read that correctly. Everything that goes beyond 1000 books is, as far as I know, in Germany called the library. And since I am way past that number, I guess I have my own library here at home.

Bought Books

Burning Glass by Kathryn Purdie

I couldn´t say what urged me to show this stranger I was more than the pitiful girl staring back at him. I was. At least as far as he should believe. I pulled my spine erect, elongated my neck, and met his stare with every ember of fire burning within me. Dare to think of me what you will, I hoped the look I gave him said. I am Sonya Petrova. And I am not broken.

Delusion in Death by J.D. Robb

“Nothing here.” Morris moved to the comp, brought up the completed analyses. “Not on these three or any DBs I´ve gotten reports on. We´ll run more tests, but at this point, it appears the substance left no permanent damage other than violent death.”
“That´s pretty … permanent.” Eve stuck her hands in her pockets, scanned the bodies again. “I need everything and anything you get as soon as you get it.”
“You think this is the first, but not the last?”
“Unless this was some twisted form of self-termination and whoever did it is on one of your slabs, yeah. It worked so well, why stop now?”
“Then we´ll hope he´s here. Otherwise, anyone, anywhere, anytime.”
Murder could happen, she thought as she drove to Cop Central, to anyone, anywhere, anytime. She´d seen the worst of what people did to people over love, money, for power, for revenge. Or just because. But mass murder painted a darker canvas, and using victims as weapons made for a particularly twisted mind.
Strangers In Death by J.D. Robb

In 2060 New York, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is about to discover how the ties that bind strangers can kill.

Firstlife by Gena Showalter
Tenley “Ten” Lockwood is an average seventeen-year-old girl… who has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she´ll live – after she dies. There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death. In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she´s drawn to isn´t where the boy she´s falling for lives? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision …

Indulgence In Death by J.D. Robb
NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas must discover who´s preying on those who cater the rich and famous in this novel.

Enchanted August by Brenda Bowen

Hopewell Cottage. Little Lost Island Maine. Old, pretty cottage to rent on a small island. Springwater, blueberries, sea glass. August.
So reads an ad on Lottie Wilkes´ and Rose Arbuthnot´s children´s preschool bulletin board. When the mothers arrive on the island, they are transformed by the salt air; the breathtaking views; the long, lazy days; and the happy routine of lobster, corn, and cocktails on the wraparound porch. By the time of the late-August blue moon, real life and its complications have finally fallen far, far away. For on this idyllic island they gradually begin to open up: to one another and to the possibilities of lives quite different from the ones they´ve been leading. Change can´t be that hard, can it.

Waiting On Wednesday #2 – A Court Of Mist And Fury by Sarah J. Maas

is a weekly event hosted by Jill of Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. I haven´t read the first book in this series yet, but this is no reason for me not to look forward to A Court of Mist and Fury. Book one stands already in one of my shelves here at home. And a few days ago I started listening to the audiobook of A Court of Thorns and Roses, and even though I am not very far yet, I already like what I hear.

But I´ll have to read the physical book, too. I don´t know why that is, or if I am the only one who experiences that, but I discovered, that I have to actually read a book – not only listening to a narrator´s voice – to get the full picture. Maybe it´s because I can´t do anything else during listening to audio. No vacuuming, no dishes, no painting, no drawing - ´cause after a little while, I am so occupied in what I am doing, that I stop listening. And, as if that wouldn´t be enough, I don´t know where I stopped paying attention to the audio, so I have to rewind till I hear something familiar. And that is, to say the least, quite annoying.

I only experienced it otherwise when I am running through the woods. There I can listen without my mind drifting away. But I can´t do that all the time 24 hours a day only to finish a book, can I ?!

A Court Of Mist And Fury

Time Out by Andreas Eschbach

I have to be honest here I never read any Andreas Eschbach title before. Yep, that´s right. He is one of Germany´s high-class Sci-Fi writers and I didn´t know him at all. I came to this series because I was kind of bored and went to my local library and there it was that I saw the first book of this series Black Out. This is a series I´ve read within no time. After the haunting story of the first two books, I simply had to know how everything would turn out. After meeting Christopher for the first time in Black Out I was hooked by his dry charm, how he sees the world and his way of thinking and dealing with situations.

Time Out*

Out Trilogy #3

Genre Thriller

Format Hardcover

✶✶✶✶

It is the biggest network that ever existed. A mere thought is enough to reach thousands. Everyone has it. Everyone is inside. Only you do not. That means: You are alone. Very alone. “We call him the Lifehook.” Christopher can´t believe it, when he hears for the first time of the gigantic advertising campaign, the famous FriendWeb-founder John Salzman has started. A chip people can communicate mentally with almost no effort? Behind this is certainly the coherence. As more and more young people pick up the Lifehook and soon for those, who do not possess it, social exclusion begins, Christopher recognizes that he can no longer hide passively in Hide-Out. But when he has the crucial idea, where the weak point of the global network could be, he and Serenity have to make the perhaps most momentous decision of their life …
Story
Only days before that, Christopher had to learn, that Jeremiah Jones isn´t listening to him anymore. That Serenity´s father isn´t called “The Prophet” for nothing. And so he is, once again, on his own to get things straight and to solve a problem. A problem he once was part of the creating process. But that´s easier said than done. It turns out, that the Lifehook is something, people want more than anything else. They even pay for it! Christopher is shocked and more than ever convinced, that this insanity has to stop. A few days after they arrived in France a weird contingency happens and all of a sudden he knows what to do and how.

Style
In this third and last book of his Out trilogy, Andreas Eschbach does not only answer all the questions, but the reader might also have had after the first two books. He also goes back to what Christopher and Serenity have done during the story of the first book: traveling under strange circumstances during the endeavor to stop the coherence once and for all. Again the reader is thrown into a wonderful story where it is once more proven, that technical progress is good, but not everything. From the personal point of view by Christopher and Serenity, "Time Out" comes to an unexpected and great end – which surprises the reader more than once. The story is set in the desert and France, with great scenes, wonderful dialogues, and some beautiful landscape descriptions. Okay, this third book isn´t as fantastic as the second was, but for me, it was still a pleasant read.

Andreas Eschbach keeps his language clear, simple to a certain point, and knows how to bring in some technical stuff without boring the reader.

Characters
Christopher goes again through a remarkable change. Not only that he discovers what being in love means he also learns that he can always trust his own instincts. That his brain isn´t working like other brains do, but that is absolutely positive, and that he only needs to listen to what it tries to tell him in his dreams, even when they´re strange like hell.

Conclusion
This final book of the Out trilogy is the perfect closure to it. The end is kind of open, yes, but in a way that matches quite right into the story. Yes, this is a must-read for any Andreas Eschbach fan, but also a really good read for any fan of thrillers with sci-fi elements.

Happy reading
