The Woman with the Cure is all about children, polio, and how science works. The incredible arrogance of some doctors who took the work of their female colleagues and presented it as their own results. And neither Dorothy nor her other female colleagues were willing to do something about it. What a shame. I could have screamed during some pages when I read about how Dorothy thought about her doctor´s father Paul's behavior. When he did everything to keep her small.

Dorothy wants to find out how Polio can get into the nervous system, how it can harm, and in what way she needs to find either a cure or a vaccine. But with mostly men in the science world, it is not easy to be seen or heard. And Dr. Paul wants to keep her at all costs without having her stepping into the limelight. And Dr. Sabin is stepping into the same footprints.
Style
Since Corona at the latest, we have known how devastating a virus can be as long as neither treatment nor a vaccine works against it. Add to that the natural, self-important arrogance of men and you have a very entertaining and impressive novel that relates to the beginnings of epidemiology.
Delicious scenes and dialogues quickly draw the reader into the story in the first half of the novel. Involve the person reading in a quick action that makes it clear again and again that women are beautiful accessories, but not much is expected of them. Especially not if they fall out of the norm. Only when Dorothy begins to explain processes that her male colleagues cannot immediately explain do they take her seriously. She always smiles and looks for answers, even when she must move obstacles out of the way or has her funding cut off or even her entire job.
The author knows how to show all of this to the reader in a brilliant way. To show living history that had to be changed at one point or another for the fictional plot of the novel. But that doesn't detract from the book itself.
Characters
For Dorothy, life is characterized by exclusion and prejudice. Exclusion because she is 1.85 m tall, prejudice because she is a woman and does not fit the classic role model. She also puts her academic work above her private happiness. Instead of living in Denmark as a real professor and wife with Arne, she stays at Yale and lets the doctor in the research group keep her down professionally. Well, this not entirely unimportant little detail may be because Arne didn't exist in real life. But for the novel, it would have been the icing on the cake.
Dorothy Horstmann is a woman who is unusual in every respect and has her principles. In many ways, her moral values are the compass of her actions and show that no matter how often she is pushed aside when it comes to the spotlight, only one thing matters to Dorothy: the bottom line. Polio can even be identified. To take away the terror. And after polio comes the next virus that needs to be fought.
Lynn Cullen has excellently portrayed male arrogance and self-importance here, without resorting to clichés or even falling into platitudes. The social norms of Americans from 1940 to 1963 are naturally shown here with all their strengths and weaknesses. And reading it made it clear to me once again that I am a woman of modern times. Because it really bothered me sometimes when women were pushed out of the spotlight by men.
Conclusion
It is an incredible novel that has gripped me more than once. Fiction is cleverly mixed with historical facts and brings history to life. And with a wink, delicious and often very humorous scenes and dialogues are brought to life. In all seriousness, I had to wipe many a tear from my cheek.

Spätestens seit Corona wissen wir, wie verheerend ein Virus wirken kann, solange weder eine Behandlung noch ein Impfstoff dagegenwirkt. Pack dann noch die natürliche, selbstherrliche Arroganz der Männer dazu und du hast einen sehr unterhaltsamen und eindrücklichen Roman, der sich auf die Anfänge der Epidemiologie bezieht.
Köstliche Szenen und Dialoge ziehen die Leserin bzw. den Leser in der ersten Romanhälfte sehr schnell in die Geschichte hinein. Verwickeln die lesende Person in eine zügige Handlung, die immer wieder deutlich macht, Frauen sind schönes Beiwerk, aber viel zugetraut wird ihnen nicht. Schon gar nicht, wenn sie aus der Norm fallen. Erst wenn Dorothy anfängt, Vorgänge zu erklären, die ihre männlichen Kollegen auf Anhieb nicht sofort erklären können, wird sie von diesen ernst genommen. Sie lächelt stets und sucht nach Antworten, selbst wenn sie Steine aus dem Weg räumen muss oder ihr die Mittel gestrichen werden oder gar ihre ganze Stelle.
All das versteht die Autorin auf brillante Weise dem Leser vor Augen zu führen. Lebendige Geschichte zu zeigen, die an der einen oder anderen Stelle für die fiktive Handlung des Romans verändert werden musste. Was dem Buch selbst aber nicht schadet.
Charaktere
Für Dorothy ist das Leben geprägt von Ausgrenzung und Vorurteilen. Ausgrenzung, weil sie 1,85 m groß ist, Vorurteile weil sie eine Frau ist und nicht dem klassischen Rollenmodel entspricht. Zudem stellt sie ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit über ihr privates Glück. Statt in Dänemark als richtige Professorin und Ehefrau mit Arne zu leben, bleibt sie in Yale und lässt sich vom Arzt der Forschungsgruppe beruflich kleinhalten. Gut, diese nicht ganz unwichtige Kleinigkeit mag der Tatsache geschuldet sein, dass es Arne im realen Leben nicht gab. Doch für den Roman wäre es das Tüpfelchen auf dem I gewesen.
Dorothy Horstmann ist eine Frau, die in jeglicher Beziehung ungewöhnlich ist und ihre Prinzipien hat. Ihre moralischen Werte sind in vielerlei Hinsicht der Kompass ihres Handelns und zeigen, ganz egal, wie oft sie zur Seite geschoben wird, wenn es um das Scheinwerferlicht geht, dann zählt für Dorothy nur eins: Das Endergebnis. Polio den gar auszumachen. Den Schrecken zu nehmen. Und nach Polio kommt der nächste Virus, der bekämpft werden muss.
Lynn Cullen hat hier auf vortreffliche Weise die männliche Arroganz und Selbstherrlichkeit dargestellt, ohne auf Klischees zurückzugreifen oder gar in Plattitüden zu verfallen. Die gesellschaftlichen Normen der Amerikaner aus den Jahren 1940 bis 1963 wird hier wie selbstverständlich mit all ihren Stärken und Schwächen gezeigt. Und hat mir beim Lesen erneut klar gemacht, dass ich eine Frau der Neuzeit bin. Denn mir stieß es so manches Mal ziemlich auf, wenn die Frauen von den Männern aus dem Rampenlicht gestoßen wurden.
Resultat
Ein unglaublicher Roman, der mich mehr als einmal fest gepackt hat. Fiktion wird geschickt mit geschichtlichen Fakten vermischt und lässt Historisches lebendig werden. Und mit einem Augenzwinkern werden köstliche und oftmals sehr humorige Szenen und Dialoge zum Leben erweckt. Bei aller Ernsthaftigkeit, da musste ich mir so manche Träne von der Wange wischen.
