Waiting On Wednesday #53 – Ewig Wir-Deathline by Janet Clark

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. For whatever reason Jill is not blogging since August 2016 but her meme is still going on. Hope everything is ok and she will be back soon! Until then, I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

My pick for this week is Ewig Wir-Deathline (Forever Us-Deathline) from the German author Janet Clark. I fell in love with the beautiful cover the first book had and the moment I got the information, that there would be a second book, I had it on my reading schedule for 2018. Now I am curious if this second one will be able to entertain me as much as the first book has.

Stahlblaue Nacht by Tetsuya Honda

One of the many beautiful surprises, that showed up in my mailbox this year. Tetsuya Honda is a bestselling author in Japan and his series about Reiko Himekawa (this is the book Soul Cage) is about the life and work of a female Homicide Detective. Originally, I wasn´t sure if I wanted to continue with this series. But when it was in my mailbox and I had it at home, I thought why not give it another try. Well, not sure what to think of it now. There is still plenty of things in the plot that I am not getting warm with and my view of being a woman is totally different from the one, Reiko shows.

Original Title Soul Cage

Genre Thriller
Pages 432
Format Paperback

✶✶✶

A severed hand, but no body. But a big pool of blood. For Reiko Himekawa and her team, the investigation into the case of the architect Takaoka is extremely difficult. Where is the corpse? When Reiko shows the missing person´s picture to an old friend, it gets even more complicated. Because he claims that the man in the photo is not Takaoka at all. But who is it then? And where is Takaoka? (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Reiko is forced to work together with two men she can´t stand. Both are eager to prove that they are way more capable to solve the case than she is. One of them even tries to convince her that he´s madly in love with Reiko and would do anything to get her in his bed. But Reiko isn´t willing to let one or the other happen. She wants to do her job, wants the respect she believes that she deserves, and does everything in her power to solve a murder she knows by instinct that something is wrong with.

Style
Yes, this is a fictional story, and yes, the humor of the Japanese people seems to be a bit different from the rest of the world. But why on earth is the main figure letting her male colleagues treat her like she´s a sex toy? And why is Reiko doing so tough and thinks all those disgusting things but never calls her team to stop it? She is their boss for crying out loud! Good, there is one scene, where she asks her colleague to stop it, but the insipid aftertaste for the reader was already there.

Tetsuya Honda´s writing style is clear, he shows very openly the Japanese lifestyle and his language is sometimes very blunt and vulgar. Many brutal and very bloody scenes are among the ongoing story and some dialogues are filled with obscene words and show you that it isn´t easy for a female Homicide Detective to work the way Reiko does. And then there is all the information the author gives you. Information that seemed sooooo important to the police but not to the reader itself. Was that as a filler to get more pages into the book or is that normal for Japanese police to investigate? Well, I don´t know. All I know is that for a reader from Europe it read very weird.

Characters
Maybe it is me, or the fact that I am grown up in the western hemisphere of this planet. But every time one figure in this book was talking with Reiko as if she´d be a bitch and only there to give her male colleagues a nice view while doing a cruel job, I could have smacked that figure right into his damn smiling face. On the other hand, Reiko seemed to feel a perverse pleasure during those dialogues and scenes. For me, it was as if they were playing in a bad erotic movie.

All in all, I am not getting warm with Reiko and her behavior. She is told to be a tough woman and that she has her very own style while investigating a case. Yes, she has her very own way. But she is also complaining in her head about the lacking respect she gets from other colleagues and that she can´t stand a certain figure but has to work with him to solve the case. During the first book, there was a secret in her private life, one that led to her behavior she shows today towards others. In this second book, Reiko seemed more of a minor character and that was sad.

Conclusion
Phew, now that I am done with this book I am kind of relieved. The open end wasn´t mine though. I have no clue where this will lead or what the author is trying to tell his readers about Reiko and her story when it comes to men or one in particular. Too many open questions and too many confusing things here. But one thing is clear: the case had many unexpected twists and turns, and the final solution was one I didn´t expect at all.

Happy reading

Lord Of Shadows by Cassandra Clare

Maybe my expectations were way too high after the thrilling first book of the The Dark Artifices Trilogy. Or I´d expected something different. I don´t know. All I know is, that this second book couldn´t live up to it. I am glad that the cover of the German edition looks the same as the original edition does. But I am missing the mysterious feeling I have every time I look at the cover of Lady Midnight.

✶✶✶½

The young shadow hunter Emma Carstairs has avenged her parents, but she finds no peace. Because the friendship with her parabatai Julian has become love – a relationship that has brutal consequences according to the laws of shadow hunters. In order to protect Julian and herself, Emma, therefore, takes up Julian´s brother Mark. Mark, who lived with the fairies for five years and whose loyalty is not really clear. Especially as unrest prevails in the underworld. The fairies had to bow to harsh conditions after the Dark War and covet. Emma, Julian, and Mark must fight for what they love – before it´s too late and a new war breaks out … (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Emma and Julian are sharing a secret, no one else is allowed to know. But with their growing feelings for each other, it becomes more and more difficult for them to live after the strict rules every parabatai couple has to follow. And Emma´s relationship with Mark, Julian´s elder brother complicates things. Because Emma is determined to keep Julian from any harm and if that means that he is keeping his distance from her, so be it.

Style
There is no doubt, that this second book of The Dark Artifices Trilogy is written by Cassandra Clare. Her style comes through every line and word. But this time, the novel is missing its fantastic adventurous revenge the first book was showing. The central theme, to be precise. In fact, I had to read quite some chapters before I could see an actual plot and where this story could lead. Lord of Shadows has a lot of emotions in it, no doubt about that. In the form of denied feelings and many romantic scenes. At first, it seemed fitting and logical. Then it became more and more annoying. Many misunderstandings are the reason why Emma and Julian or Diana act the way they do. I can´t think of any scene in the “City of” books, that was built like that.

And then the explanations the author gave during some scenes. They seemed just too phony. As if the author had to come up with something and was forced to write about it in the way she did. The lack of logic in her writing during some pages is something I am not familiar with when it comes to a Cassandra Clare book. On the other hand, her fantasy is wonderful to read. How she describes the scenes, the bright and intense colors of fairyland, or the foggy and rainy London. That was something for the eye. But what I didn´t like the most was that every third page and scene the plot was about another love attachment. Don´t get me wrong here. The relationship and growing love between Emma and Julian is something, that belongs in this trilogy. At least in my opinion. Only there was barely something else the author gives her readers.

And the end – oh boy, I am not okay with that. Not at all. Two dead figures and a figure who has lost control and the respect of the others. No, this second novel could not live up to the high standards Lady Midnight has set. Sad, but I don´t know how else to say it.

Characters
At least the different figures are something you like to watch. There is Zara, an arrogant and cruel young woman who likes to claim what others have achieved. Her paranoia when it comes to foreign things and creatures is quite something. Or Kit, who is fighting his emotions all the time and who is wondering why Ty is doing what he does. He is one great boy and I can´t wait to read more about him. Or Dru, one of the youngest Blackthorns. How she sees the world, how she thinks about everything, and what she does to help is amazing. And Diana, well, what can I say. I was a bit disappointed that she didn´t have that much space in this book than expected.

Anyways. It was wonderful to see Clary and Jace and to hear what they had to say. Though the author gives Clary some words that I didn´t want to read.  I was quite shocked when I read them in a dialogue Clary had with Emma. No, no, and no again.

Conclusion
Sad, but I guess this book wasn´t really mine. I was expecting a haunting and thrilling sequel to Lady Midnight with some answers and got an average fantasy novel where mostly love attachments were building the story and plot. Not what I was hoping or looking for. But I am sure that I am one of the few readers who sees it that way. Read it yourself and see how you think about Lord of Shadows.

Ohne Ausweg by Kathrin Lange

To be honest, after reading the second book of this series, I wasn´t sure if I wanted to continue reading this series. But now that I have, I am very glad I did. Want to know why? Keep reading *smile* Kathrin Lange YOU ROCK! This thriller is breathtaking, heartbreaking, and haunting from the first to the last page. After I had finished it, I was in a state of shock, disbelieve, and had a very tense feeling all over my body.

✶✶✶✶✶

The Muslim special investigator Faris Iskander has become an undercover agent: Because an Islamist organization plans poison gas attacks on Berlin, Faris is put in jail. Because terrorist leader al-Sadiq is in custody there – if Faris succeeds in pretending to be an Islamist and gaining Sadiq´s trust, he can provide much-needed information to the LKA. But while Faris is forced behind bars to credibly prove his terrorist intentions, his team is desperately chasing Sadiq´s assassin outside. Then the first poison gas attack happens. And as more and more people die in the capital, Faris discovers that a far-right organization is also planning an assassination. A hopeless fight on two fronts begins … (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Faris is restless. Forced to keep a low profile while preparing for his new operation, he is still suffering from the wounds his last one gave him, physically and mentally. But who if not him will be able to stop that evil man and his plans? With his daughter in mind, he does everything to keep her and his family alive and well. And if that means that he must face the evils eye and do whatever it takes to prove to him and others that he is the legend his colleagues made him, then he will. At all costs.

Style
Holy moly, this thriller was brilliant! And I am glad that I convinced myself to give this series another chance and kept reading. Kathrin Lange writes clear, often brutal, and shows you some bloody scenes and blunt dialogues – fantastic. The more I´ve read, the more I´ve got thrilled. Her language is easy to understand and so diversified, you won´t get bored at all.

The plot is very complex and shows the disruption of a man who has deep wounds inside his soul and body and who must deal with his very own demons. The story is very intense and shows a variety of hate, intrigues, violence, hypocrisy, and double moral standard. A very explosive combination, if you ask me. There is such a power, such as compelling energy and tension in this book, wow, simply wow.

After reading the first book I was thrilled and wanted more. Then I got to read the second book and was annoyed and somehow angry. There were many things in it I didn´t agree with at all and my intention to read the third book was equal to zero. I couldn´t stand Faris and his view he had from the world, his team, and his imagination that he was the only one who could possibly be able to save the world.

Characters
This time the focus is more on the inner turmoil Faris is in. To keep his daughter safe, he has to agree to a plan that ties his hands in silence. His inner conflict, his dark edges, and the side his colleagues call manic are what make him capable to do what he does. There is one scene where Faris shows in a very impressive way what it means to be Faris Iskander. At that moment he brings out his rage and darkness and turns from one second to the other from a very controlled and arrogant man into a wild and uncontrolled crackpot – only by focusing on his dark side deep inside of him. That scene made me jump; so captivating and intense was it.

I don´t know exactly how the author did it to turn her main figure a tiny bit around. But after reading the first pages of this third book I knew right away that something in Faris was different. Oh yes, he still seems to be the only one who is willing to do the dangerous and craziest things, and he still shows a side of him that makes you shake your head in disbelieve, but on the other hand, he isn´t that loony anymore, he was in book one and two. Yes, he has his reasons the others don´t know anything about it. And yes, he is still willing to overstep a certain line to do the unthinkable to save what he sees as his job. But there is a new side he now shows. And that side is quite fascinating, and I hope that he will her a chance to develop.

Conclusion
What a brilliant and fantastic thriller! Once I´ve started reading it, I could barely put it down. So haunting, so thrilling, and with such an incredible main figure. Bloody hell, Faris, you´ve done it.

Happy reading

Vier Zauberhafte Schwestern Und Die Unsichtbare Gefahr by Sheridan Winn

A wonderful book for children age 9 and up. A few years ago, I stumbled across this beautiful series, with magically created covers at my library. There are silver stars sparkling all over the cover motive and the painting is so sweet and adorable *sigh* If you are looking for a series where love, loyalty and the values of a caring family are held high, then this series is what you are looking for. This series contains adventure, intrigues, passion told in an adorable and soft way, that you feel like home while reading.

It is spring, and the four sisters Flame, Marina, Flora, and Sky should prepare for their exams. But in Cantrip Towers, weird things happen: An invisible intruder sneaks through the corridors trying to steal the magical powers of the family. How should the sisters fight an enemy they do not see? They make a risky plan and go into great danger. Only with combined magic powers can they survive this adventure. (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary).

Story
Flame has lost her magical power. There is no tingling in her fingertips anymore and she is kind of desperate. After all those years where she had learned to control her power and sometimes had wished she´d never had gotten it, one moment of fury and everything seems lost. The timing couldn´t be worse. An invisible power seems to reach out to get Cantrip Towers into his hands and with that great danger overshadows the family life of the Cantrips.

Style
I love the soft and melodious tone and writing style the author uses, to tell her story about the Cantrip sisters. Even in the darkest scenes and moments, there is always some hope and warmth to feel.

Sheridan Winn´s style is easy to read, and yet with some power. And the message is clear: Never lose hope, no matter what happens.
I absolutely love Sheridan Winn´s writing style. How she uses a soft voice to show hate, revenge and all the other dark sides, a human being can have. As a reader, you always know that there will be some sort of happy end. And for children of all ages, this series is simply a great read.

Characters
Nobody is allowed to know about the four sisters´ magical powers. In this book, their parents are getting involved and Ottalie, their mother, must learn a bitter lesson. Her ignorance and disbelieve throw her daughters in a very dangerous position. And there is nothing she can do, to help them. The love of a caring mother is everything. Here that love is on the test bench. The author shows with great sensitivity the conflict Ottalie is in and how she finds a way out.

Flame is desperate. She doesn´t know if her fury outburst has cost the life of a human. And she doesn´t know if and how she will gain her magic back. Because she and her sisters were never meant to use their magic in fury against others. But that is exactly what Flame has done.

Conclusion
A beautiful, haunting and very thrilling new story about the four Cantrip sisters. Every page shows how it is when a family stands together and does everything to keep each other safe and sound. I absolutely enjoyed this book.

Bird And Sword by Amy Harmon

I am not sure which cover I like most. The one the German edition is showing or the one, the English edition has. Both are so unique and beautiful in their very own way. One thing I DO know. The Bird and The Sword (its original title) is a novel that will polarize its readers. And with polarizing its readers I mean that some of us will be swooning over the moon over this story while others will probably ask what is so special about this novel? Keep reading and you´ll find out how I think about it. Well, there´s for sure no simple answer to that.

At age five, Lark had to watch her mother being executed. With the last breath, she took her daughter´s voice and power of words. Because magic is a mortal sin in Jeru. Thirteen years later, the young King Tiras appears at the court of Lark´s father to remind him of his fidelity to the war. He takes the voiceless young woman hostage with him. At first, Lark fears the king, but she quickly realizes that Tiras is just as free as she is, and that love may be the only weapon that can break their chains.
Story
Lark was only five when she witnessed the brutal death of her mother. The king himself took her life only because he thought she´d done some magic. From that moment on, Lark was marked. Not with a visible sign, but with the loss of her voice. And with that loss, she became invisible to others. Until one day, Tiras, the new king, arrives at her fathers´ doorsteps and demands her as price until her father would pay his depth to the kingdom.

Style
No doubt, this novel has a very varied plot and characters who know how to catch the reader´s eye. And the writing-style *sigh* Pure melody. And yet, I am wondering how a beautiful story, told in a very unique voice could be so dull at the same time. Over the pages, I was enjoying the novel about Lark and Tiras and couldn´t get enough of the beautiful language the author used while describing emotions, scenery, and figures. Then there were pages where everything seemed incredible mat and not haunting and thrilling at all. During those parts of the book, it seemed as if Amy Harmon was searching for the right words to tell her story but couldn´t find ´em.

Over most parts of this novel, the author has built an amazing setting, shows how powerful words are - even the unspoken ones - and yet this book isn´t what I call a page-turner. At least not entirely. While reading I had my moments, loved some of the things that were happening and because of the diversified story, I was never in the situation to put it aside and stop reading. My curiosity about how everything would end up, how things would develop, and if and how Lark would gain her voice back, were just too big. On the other side, there are a lot of emotions here. The reader gets an oppressive notion of how it must have felt like to be without a voice and to discover that there are many words but not being able to get their full meaning only because you can´t speak them out loud. The journey Lark made while learning and discovering all the secrets a language can have – was quite impressive. Especially when you think about the time, this fantasy novel is set.

Characters
Lark is a young woman who doesn´t take anything for granted. With the loss of her voice, she discovered how others were acting in her presence and that she had her very own ways to get the information she needed to survive. And over the years she became a strong and smart woman who was willing to do everything to get what she wanted. I loved the way how the author has created her. The strength Lark has, the energy she is keeping hidden deep inside her, how she sees her father, how she sometimes acts to stay alive and well. She is a really adorable person though she isn´t what most people call real beauty. And if you ask me, she is a beauty. Maybe not in a common way, but in her very own one she has more grace and style than any other of the beautiful figures in this novel. Because she´s got a heart.

Conclusion
In the end, I guess I am honest when I say that I am torn about this novel. On one hand, I enjoyed it very much, on the other, I still can´t believe how melodic and dull at the same time a story can be written. Call me crazy or whatever you want, but I already marked the publishing date of the second book. And that not only because of its cover (which is like the one at the beginning of my review), no, but also because after the end of this book I want to know how things go on. Yes, I do believe that this story has still air up. But judge for yourself.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #52 – Girl In Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This is a book that was offered to me by the German publisher a little while ago. The cover and the blurb made me curious and I replied with a positive answer. Now I am waiting for it to come out next year and hopefully, it will be as good as most of my international friends are telling me that it is. So, my pick for this week is Girl in Pieces, and I hope it was a wise choice. As always you see on the right side the German cover and on the left, the US/UK.

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she´s already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she´s learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don´t have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie´s heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

Girl Online Going Solo by Zoe Sugg

A nice book that is written in the typically Zoe Sugg way. For me a wonderful closing of this trilogy. If you are in for an easy to read a novel with some beautiful scenes and nice created figures who aren´t that profound, then this is definitely your book. In my case, it meant, that I could relax and enjoy this novel without any problems. You don´t have to think while reading, and that is sometimes just perfect.

As Penny starts the school year she´s ready to face the world – alone. Noah has gone off the radar after ending his world tour early, and no one, including Penny, knows where he is. So, when she accepts Megan´s invitation to visit her performing arts school, it seems like an opportunity to make some new friends. Helping everyone else seems to be the right remedy – Elliot needs her friendship more than ever, and she meets Posey, who she can really help with her stage fright. But is charming Scottish boy Callum the right kind of distraction? And can Penny truly move on when Noah´s shadow seems to haunt her around every corner?
Story
Penny tries to forget Noah. The trips to London and the wedding in Scotland seem just right. Unfortunately, the new peace does not last long and when she meets someone new, she must decide what she really wants. And if that wouldn´t be enough, Elliott´s parents also cause a lot of swirling. So, what to do if you can´t run away?

Style
The tone is light, with lots of humor and a wonderful main figure. It is intriguing, plans thwarted, injustice repaired, and made new friendships. All in simple language and with a lot of warmth and feeling. Not only does the author paint a very beautiful picture of friendship and heartache but she also sensitively portraits the love of a caring family. You can literally feel it while reading the pages and it wraps you like a cozy blanket. And no matter if it gets harder, in terms of events or dialogues, the author always remains gentle in the sound – even if it is direct. Jealousy, envy, false ambitions, heartbreak, and separations. The range of feelings is big and varied. Penny tries to find her way of life. Photography is her passion and should one day become her profession – and she´s a great way to forget Noah, her ex-boyfriend.

Characters
Elliot is an absolute darling. He joins Penny, even if he is going through hell at home. With sarcastic humor and the love of his boyfriend Alex, he tries to compensate for that. My deepest respect for this guy.

Conclusion
The perfect end of this trilogy. A wonderful relaxing novel, with the right portion of intrigues. Absolutely recommended.

Happy reading

King´ s Cage by Victoria Aveyard

One of the very few books I know where the title is actually saying what the book is all about. But again, I like the cover of the English edition way more than the ones the German editions are showing. I love the blue, silver, white and red of this cover. A bleeding crown, how fitting. And yes, the new king is bleeding. In a way I never imagined he would but, again I have to use this word, very fitting in its own meaning.

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother´s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country – and his prisoner. As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare´s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back. When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire – leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.
Story
Mare suffers still and sometimes loud. She seems to be the new marionette the king uses to keep his country under control. At least it looks that way. What no one knows, Mare is unable to do whatever she wants to do. She can only hope that her people will see behind and be able to help her.

Style
This book was a heavyweight. The German edition is over 600 pages long – yes, my poor wrists. I was quite curious to read this and very happy when I got it. But this is one of the books that couldn´t live up to the expectations I had for it. No doubt, there is a lot of action in this novel. Many intrigues take place and the reader gets a very close glimpse at the hate and life on the king’s court. And boy I felt so many times completely helpless watching Mare suffer and with the impression that this story was leading nowhere. Almost half of this book is showing the king´s fight to keep his country and court under control. There isn´t much of a diversified scenery or plot to see. It takes long, very long for Mare to do what she had planned.

Characters
The king is cruel. His love for Mare is one sick feeling but obviously the only way how he can express his feelings at all. What I like about the King´s Cage is, that I get to know why Maven is the way he is. The author tells you in a very intense way what his mother did to him, why she did it, and what the result now is. I sometimes thought that Maven is a poor bastard, manipulated for a greater reason, and a man who fails completely at what he´s supposed to be: A king.

Mare, on the other hand, is forced to present her face to the country and to demonstrate that the Reds haven´t succeeded. That the king is still in control. That she is paying a very high price for that show, is something the country doesn´t know or sees. At some point, I was very entertained by what I saw with her eyes. She doesn´t know who´s an enemy at the court and who is there to help her.

Conclusion
What in the world was that? Is this a joke? Well, guess what, I am NOT laughing. Yes, I guess we had to see how life at the king´s court is and that he is mostly living a lie. But that scene at the end? What was that for? Yes, I am not okay with many things that happened in this book and I am for sure not okay with the end. So many unanswered questions and the new constellation is something I am not sure what to think of. Read it yourself, that might be the best advice here.

Happy reading

Gotteslüge by Kathrin Lange

This thriller was a bit disappointing. Or maybe my expectations after the fantastic first book of this series were just way too high. I expected the main figure who had - again - to fight his personal demons. And there is a lot of that in this book. But the way it happened wasn´t as entertaining and haunting as hoped. But more to that later.

Faris Iskander Series #2

Genre Thriller
Pages 413
Format Paperback

✶✶✶

What at first looks like a hostage-taking turns out to be a case of far-fetched personal dimensions for Faris: A man armed with an explosive belt delivers a message to him. It reads: “Next time you will press the trigger.” Faris can save his own life as the bomb explodes. But he does not know that an old enemy devised a devilish plan for him. And this adversary does not shy away from abduction or cold-blooded murder. After all, he wants to witness how Faris himself becomes an assassin … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Faris is again in the precarious position of having to hunt down an unknown opponent. Not only that he is personally requested by the anonymous caller, no, he also feels guilty about the death of his old partner Paul. A dangerous feeling. Additional to that, it seems that an old and a new enemy obviously have fun torturing Faris, so he once again takes on the role of the self-sacrificing policeman.

Style
Kathrin Lange uses a sometimes very blunt, brutal, and almost obscene language. Mostly it fits into the ongoing story very well, but during some scenes and dialogues, it went sharply above the level of what was thrilling to read. Another thing that started bothering me at some point was the fact, that the story itself is a very diversified and fascinating one, but the plot is boring and shows the same pictures all the time. Good, I get it that when the basis is extreme religiousness – “evangelical” called by experts – that you can´t change it into something completely different. But is it really necessary that a mostly peaceful religion is turned over and over again into something evil?

Don´t get me wrong here. I don´t mind if something is turned into something bad to make a thriller a thriller and to bring some pepper into the plot. Only that here it is always presented in the same way and style. And nothing changes. You see one scene, you´ve seen all of this book.

Characters
No doubt, Faris has to suffer a lot and his demons torture him. And that changes even the strongest man. He is a man with a very dark side and that side you don´t want to see out in the open. But that he believes that he is the only solution to any problem that comes across, that gets annoying. Yes, I see some changes in his character, after knowing the first book of this series. And I want and hope that I will see him keep changing. But in a way that is for the better and in a way that shows that despite all odds, he is a man who does what he does with a free will.

Conclusion
Sad to say it, but I clearly expected more from this thriller. I am sorry, but this is an average book that glides into an endless loop of fanaticism, radicalism, and insanity. Too bad, but this thriller was a faint sequel after a great start. Not sure if I will read the next one, and if yes, I hope it is way better than this one.

Happy reading

Einsam Bist Du Und Allein by Mary Higgins Clark

This is the German edition of All By Myself, Alone. And despite the fact, that I am obviously not reading this series in its chronological order, I enjoyed this novel with Alvirah and Willy. A nice and easy to read thriller. Until a few weeks ago, I wasn´t even aware that this series exists. Well, that sounds now a bit awkward. As a huge MHC fan, I probably should have known it.  But in Germany, the books are not always published the way they are supposed to be.

After a private drama gemstone expert, Celia urgently needs a break. Relieved, she accepts the invitation to lecture on a cruise ship. There she befriends Lady Em, a rich old lady with an invaluable emerald necklace. Three days later, in the middle of the high sea, Lady Em is found murdered – and the chain has disappeared. Celia is determined to clarify the facts. Even if the list of suspects is getting longer. And even if she can no longer be sure of her own life aboard. (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Alvirah meets Celia on board a cruise ship and gets involved in the murder of Lady Em. And as always Alvirah can´t resist helping and to start solving everything in her very own way. Nice, kind, and with a smartness that even stuns her husband Willy after all those years of marriage.

Style
In her usual gently style, Mary Higgins Clark wrote this thriller with style and class. The tone is soft and wonderful to read and the plot beautiful created and thought through. Good, some dialogues and scenes show an Alvirah I am not so fond of. But mostly she is an adorable, nice old Lady who stands with both feet on the ground and shares her thoughts with her caring and loving husband. Mary Higgins Clark might not have written one of her best thrillers with this book, but this eleventh Alvirah and Willy book are good for some well-entertained reading hours.

Characters
Celia is a young successful woman who shows pretty much the kind of woman, the author likes to create in her thrillers. Self-confident (though I am pretty sure Celia wouldn´t describe herself like that, at least not now) but not arrogant. Beautiful but not over the top. Alvirah is a lovely old Lady who knows how to listen to others and who watches very carefully what others do and don´t do. She might be sometimes a bit too much of everything but in a charming way. And when you know her, you won´t see those moments as a negative part of the story.

Conclusion
A nice to read a thriller with a wonderful main figure, beautiful scenery and a story that makes you laugh, shake your head or smile while reading. It might not be the best book Mary Higgins Clark has ever written, but it is close.
