Waiting On Wednesday #61 – The Queens Of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. For whatever reason Jill is not blogging since August 2016 but her meme is still going on. Hope everything is ok and she will be back soon! Until then, I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

This book got me by its cover. Holy heck – what a brilliant motive. The combination of black, gold, and the two hands holding a crown; it can´t get more dramatic. And when I think of the last book I´ve read by Tessa Gratton (Blood Magic) then I am absolutely curious how this one will be. I mean, this plays obviously in a completely different time and age. And with three women who have to fight for what they want under a king in a Shakespeare-like-manner combined with the authors a bit dark and mysterious style... this promises some reading pleasure upfront.

The Queens Of Innis Lear
Author Tessa Gratton
Publishing Date March 27, 2018
Publisher Tor Books
Format Hardcover
Goodreads

Three Queens. One crown. All out war.
Gaela. Ruthless Commander. I am the rightful heir of Innis Lear. No more will I wait in the shadows and watch my mother´s murderer bleed my island dry. The Kings hold on the crown must end - willingly or at the edge of my sword. Regan. Master Manipulator. To secure my place on the throne, I must produce an heir. Countless times I have fed the islands forests my blood. Yet, my ambition is cursed. No matter what or whom I must destroy, I will wield the magic of Innis Lear. Elia. Star-blessed Priest. My sisters hide in the shadows like serpents, waiting to strike our ailing king. I must protect my father, even if it means marrying a stranger. We all have to make sacrifices. Love and freedom will be mine.

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #52 – Wrapping Up January

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #52

Yesterday I went to the post office to finally get my package with The Cruel Prince inside. Only to find out at home that it was damaged! Called the bookstore and asked for a replacement, which will arrive next week. Hopefully. After all, I´ve heard about it, I decided to give this author another try. I wasn´t very fond of her book, The Darkest Part of the Forest, though I was intrigued by its German cover.

Sunday Post #9

I´ve got the sniffles. It is not bad, but annoying. Besides that, I had a very uneventful week. When it comes to not bookish things. Weather is playing games with us. One day cold and freezing with temperatures around zero and the ugliest weather you can imagine, the next we have up to 12 -15 degrees Celsius (about 53-59 degrees Fahrenheit) and the weather is as beautiful as it can be. Around town they had to fell some trees that were damaged by “Friederike” and everything looks now a bit different, but otherwise we are glad that things are back to normal again.

In the bookish area, I guess I am starting to work again with a publisher I quit working with last year. Over almost ten years I could ask my admin to ask them for books to review and the requested book was a few weeks later in my mailbox. Then a few years ago, the publisher started its own blogger portal (a very complicated one) and things were changing.

Besides the fact that one of their employees there had caused me some huge anger last year, I just saw no point in requesting books in the publisher´s own blogger portal when every request I placed got turned down.
We even had a huge discussion over on the publishers´ own FB group, where bloggers were expressing their disappointment about all those declines and that it made no sense at all to them (me included) to stay there as a registered blogger. I mean, I asked for eight books over a period of time of eight weeks. One approval was the result. Some bloggers even mentioned that they would rather cancel their registration with the publisher and instead buy all the books they wanted. During reading all those comments I went to that particular portal, logged myself in, and saw that a book I was looking for was displayed. I started a request and a few hours later I was totally flabbergasted when I saw that I GOT APPROVED.

So, now I am curious if and when that book will appear in my mailbox.

Besides that, I am still trying to write a review but somehow my brain isn´t willing. Everything I write gets deleted after a few minutes because everything reads like crap.  Therefore, I am a bit behind and new reviews are scarce goods on my blog at the moment.

Herz In Scherben by Kathrin Lange

That trilogy is one heck of a great read. And if you are in for some young adult mystery thriller, then this is for sure your book! In English, this book could be titled Heart in shards. Again, the combination of a fictional story and an interesting curse based on elements of a ship´s tragedy that actually happened in 1884 is woven together by the author in a very fascinating way. And that curse is the base for all the pain and desperation that brought David and his father to the point where they are now.

Come closer to me, and you´ll regret it. A shot resounds in David´s head. Suddenly the memory is there, and he does not know if it has something to do with Charlie´s death and the terrible events on Martha´s Vineyard. Five months have passed since then, but now a dark idea draws David with power back to the island. His girlfriend Juli follows him full of concern. But against all fears, it is not the island curse that makes life difficult fort them, but the arrogant Lizz. She does everything she can to drive Juli out of David´s side. When suddenly a girl´s body appears, Juli begins to doubt. What really happened on the cliffs in winter? And what role did David play in this? (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Juli is shocked when she realizes that her boyfriend David is drawn back to Martha´s Vineyard. For the past six months, she enjoyed a normal life with David and her father far away from the Bell´s family estate Sorrow. And lived an illusion. Because David´s nightmares never stopped. In fact, they are getting worse. Only his return to Sorrow seems the only solution to the problem. But back on the estate Lizz appears again and makes Juli´s and David´s life a living hell.

Style
Again, the combination of a fictional story and an interesting curse based on elements of a ship´s tragedy that actually happened in 1884 is woven together by the author in a very fascinating way.
And that curse is the base for all the pain and desperation that brought David and his father to the point where they are now. A bit melancholic and with a slightly old-fashioned sounding style – that´s the way how Kathrin Lange has written this second part of her Heart-trilogy. The writing style is calm, sometimes almost gloomy, although there are some violent scenes where it is not only verbally loud. The horror that shaped Juli´s winter stay on Sorrow – and from which she had nearly six months of peace and quiet in Boston – beats again and seems to be even crueler this time. By varying lengths of chapters, the author skillfully builds the tension and underscores this by mysterious hints in the dialogues and reflections of Juli and the ever-stranger behavior of David. The end is a breathtaking cliffhanger!

Characters
Even more desperation, pain, agony, hatred, and, jealousy form the foundation of this figural constellation. A network that connects Kathrin Lange with an almost morbid tendency to self-torture and a sophisticated cat-and-mouse game that is played in a relentless grueling war of nerves. The fascinating thing here, the interaction of the individual characters is so convincing and more or less profound that it gives the plot even more fuel. And the contradictory behavior of David compared to Juli makes the special kick of the story. A life-threatening confrontation shakes not only the reader and brings you near a heart attack – the characters are not spared from it either.

Conclusion
A youth thriller, with a wonderful shot of mystery, which ensures a very special thrill. A great elaborated mind game and the beautiful landscape of Martha´s Vineyard offer pure reading enjoyment.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #60 – The Echo Killing by Christi Daugherty

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I started loving this author´s books when I read her Night School series. Her style, her way to describe things, and to create tension thrilled me and still does. This new book sounds very much like a haunting mystery thriller, and though I am not too happy about the cover, its summary got me somehow. Maybe it will look totally different when I hold it live in my hands, who knows *smile*

The Echo Killing
Author Christi Daugherty
Harper McClain Series #1
Publishing Date March 13, 2018
Publisher Minotaur Books
Format Hardcover
Goodreads

A city of antebellum architecture, picturesque parks, and cobblestone streets, Savannah moves at a graceful pace. But for Harper McClain, the timeless beauty and culture that distinguishes her home´s Southern heritage vanishes during the dark and dangerous nights. She wouldn´t have it any other ways. Not even finding her mother brutally murdered in their home when she was twelve has made her love Savannah any less. Her mother´s killer was never found, and that unsolved murder left Harper with an obsession that drove her to become one of the best crime reporters in the state of Georgia. She spends her nights with the police, searching for criminals. Her latest investigation takes her to the scene of a homicide where the details are hauntingly familiar: a young girl being led from the scene by a detective, a female victim naked and stabbed multiple times in the kitchen and no traces of any evidence pointing towards a suspect. Harper has seen all of this before in her own life. The similarities between the murder of Marie Whitney and her own mother´s death lead her to believe they´re both victims of the same killer. At last, she has the chance to find the murderer who´s eluded justice for fifteen years and make sure another little girl isn´t forever haunted by a senseless act of violence – even if it puts Harper in the killer´s cross-hairs ….

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #51 – Hurricane Friederike´s Aftermath

Stacking The Shelves #51

My weekend is already TOP! Today was Everless by Sara Holland in the mail and I am totally happy about it. I´ve heard so many great things from other bloggers and readers, yes, I can say I am super excited to have it now really in my hands and THAT COVER – holy moly! There are details in it you don´t see in the photos spread all over the web.

Sunday Post #8

I have about an hour before the next Biathlon race is going on, so I am using the time to write some of my posts for today and the next days.

Hurricane “Friederike” has left Germany. So far, we count eight dead people, among them two firefighters and a man in his sixties. We are still warned to go into the woods surrounding my town because of the damage this hurricane has caused there.
Some parts in the East of Germany are still without electrical power and traveling by train is no fun. Too many tracks are still affected by overthrown trees or broken branches and though they do everything within their power, it will take obvious days to clean up.

It was a very strange feeling for me Friday morning when I saw on TV the report of a journalist while she was doing her job and reporting about the last hurricane we had rolled over the country just a few days ago.
On Thursday she was standing in one of the forests we have in the East of Germany when all a sudden the hurricane started and literally trees were falling like Mikado sticks around her. She and her team had to stay in the middle of a glade to stay safe and you could see and hear that it was for them all a very frightening and emotional moment.

We had severe storm warnings coming in during Wednesday and Wednesday evening and on Thursday morning the weather forecast got worse and worse and all a sudden they were talking about a hurricane coming. No storm, a hurricane. This area where I live is normally not affected by high water or hurricanes. A very strong storm here and there during autumn – what we call the normal autumn storm, yes, but something like what we had during the past two weeks, no.

The day after “Friederike” brought very chill air and still strong winds, and with that rain. And rain and cold air are no good combination. Ice and snow are the results as you all know. Here in my area freezing rain means that the streets get very slippery and I don´t know what´s worse. Icy roads or snowy roads.

While walking to the post office this morning, I could see some of the damage “Friederike” had caused. The usual small river that runs through our town was filled very high with brown water, the air is still chilly and everywhere you look are broken branches.

I am glad when this week´s over and we can go back to normal again. But when I think of those families, who have lost loved ones in this hurricane, it feels not good at all. For them, life will never go back to “normal” and my heart and prayers go out to them.

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake

I am not sure which cover version I like more. The one the German edition is showing or the one, the English edition has. Anyway, after I had read the first book, I HAD to read the second one as well. The end of Three Dark Crowns was just too thrilling, and I NEEDED to know how things would continue. That they would continue the way they did in One Dark Throne, wasn´t foreseeable, at least not for me. And one hell of a fantastic read!

With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before – ones that put those around her in danger she can´t seem to prevent.
Story
Arsinoe is sick and tired of fighting. Why has everything to go on as tradition wants it? And why on earth is Katharine like this all a sudden? Where has the once kind and sweet to look at girl gone? With the discovering of her real power and the knowledge that she knows nothing about it, Arsinoe is determined to figure out a way to keep herself and her sisters alive and well. But that´s easier said than done. Especially when one of them is willing to sacrifice everything and everyone, and a person intrigues as if there´s no tomorrow.

Style
Again, the author told her story about the Three Crowns in a haunting and very fascinating way. The tone is soft and the writing style easy to read with strength and power in it – wow! I am not exactly sure how Kendare Blake does it, but there isn´t one single sentence or page where you get bored. I was eagerly reading page by page and very often absolutely stunned when something unexpected happened or the author brought some twists and turns into her plot that made you jump because she turned things in a way you never thought that would happen.

And that one scene, when Katharine has to learn that she´s gone too far. When her secret comes to light and everything she holds dear is anything but safe and sound. That scene gave me goosebumps. I mean, to know everything about poison is one thing, but to live that truth, to accept it, and to plan a future with that knowledge seem to be different things.

Characters
Three sisters who have to fight for the crown one of them is supposed to wear. Three sisters who do everything to survive and to be in advance of the other two. But the conflict appears very soon to the reader and is shown by the author in a very emotional and yet pragmatic way.

Arsinoe is, on one hand, happy that she has a secret weapon. On the other hand, she has no clue how to use that to her advantage. And when she learns it the very bitter way how dangerous her powers are, and how deadly if not used with knowledge, she is desperate and wants this fight to end.

Conclusion
Holy moly, that was one heck of a fantastic fantasy novel. And THAT END! Mrs. Blake seriously?! At first, I was shocked, then even more shocked. Until I found out that there will be another book and hopefully in it some answers to all my questions. If you haven´t read Three Dark Crowns or this one, DO IT ASAP!

Happy reading

Bossman by Vi Keeland

One of the many beautiful surprises I received last year. This book you shouldn´t judge by its cover because you will find so much more in this novel. My first Vi Keeland book, but for sure not the last. This book I got by surprise. When I asked for it I never would´ve thought that I would get it. You can imagine my joy when I saw that it was on its way to my place. And it was a joy to read it.

Reese Annesley, young, pretty, ambitious, is experiencing the worst date in her life when she sees him for the first time: Chase Parker. Again, and again her gaze wanders to the incredibly attractive man at the other end of the restaurant. Suddenly he gets up, sits down at Reese´s table, pretending to be old friends and saving her evening. And when she starts her dream job a few weeks later, the company´s CEO is none other than the stranger from the restaurant she could not forget. (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Reese isn´t sure whether to be angry or stunned about the stranger´s words when she hears that she should cut her date some slack. Who is he that he can tell her that she´s making her date nervous? And why is he all of the sudden sitting right next to her at her table and telling stories about a past both never shared? Things get even more exciting when she starts her new job and has to learn that her incredibly handsome stranger is her new boss. Oh boy….

Style
Fast-paced, sometimes very funny, while other pages are darker, and others again are very emotional. In this novel, you´ll find emotions for everyone in a novel that is full of surprises and things you´d never expect to happen. But be warned. If you are a cat lover, this one might be not of your taste. Vi Keeland writes in a soft but blunt tone, her style is open and shows you all kinds of emotions. There isn´t one page where it gets boring or is close to it. Holy moly I was close to tears when I found out why Chase was acting the way he does during one scene and it was so sweet when he tried to make up for it afterward.

Characters
Reese and Chase have both gone through rough and very hard times. Both know what it means to be on the darker side of life. And both know only too well that some things you can´t deal with on your own. But when Chase´s past comes back with overwhelming power and he learns the bitter truth about something he´s done, his reaction is heartbreaking. Not only women obviously decide whether a man is worthy of them or not.

Conclusion
What a wonderful to read a novel. I was very amazed that this wasn´t at all the usual office-romance-kind-of-cheesy-thing you might expect while reading the summary. This book is definitely worth a look and your time.

Happy reading

It was on Twitter, when the author revealed the cover of her book, that I got aware of this novel. I was fascinated by the design and a few days ago I finally pre-ordered it. Though I have to admit, that the summary sounds very similar to another book I´ve read the past year; I am still looking forward to it. Maybe it´s only me and my sometimes poor memory, or I am mixing up some books. Anyway, I do hope it turns out to be a reading pleasure for me...

Stacking The Shelves #50

Thanks to a price drop for English hardcover books I was able to get some books I either only had a German edition or an audiobook. Besides them, I am still waiting for some others to arrive at my place. A few will be sent over from Canada, so it takes them a few weeks to get here. Looking forward to those arrivals. My first time that I bought books from that seller, so I am very curious about how everything will be.

Sunday Post #7

I am not happy with the way how my daily life looks at the moment. Making plans is almost impossible and though I found the style I want for my posts it is very time-consuming to change everything. Therefore, my reading time is limited, and I feel that I am not happy with that. And right in time for the weekend where I would´ve had time to work on those changes, I got sick and ended up in bed – sleeping most of the time. Well, well …

But I can say that I made some progress on my eating issues. I want to change during 2018 some of the bad habits I have in that field and it seems that I am successful. Let´s see how this will keep going over the year *smile*

Follow Friday #32 – Your First (Audio) Book 2018

Launched by Sonja of A Bookshelf Full Of Sunshine, continued by FiktiveWelten with a new logo. The blog action is for lively communication between bloggers, a good network, and should be fun. Duration of the question: Friday to Thursday. Rules. No registration required. This week the FF wants to know what (audio) book I read first this year or listened to it. Well, to be honest, I am doing both. Or did. I just finished a printed book AND I am listening for many weeks to an audiobook which I will finish soon.

But don´t think the print or the audio would be bad because it took me so long to read it and because I am still listening to the audio.

No, not at all.

It is just that I didn´t have the time to read as much as I usually do. And during December and the first eleven days of 2018, I had tons of other things to do and to deal with; so reading time was very limited.

The good news is, I just finished One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake before I read the question for today´s FF and am still listening to Royally Screwed by Emma Chase.

Both books are one hell of great entertainment, each of them in their own ways and style and I am smiling like crazy while listening to the royal audio. I guess one of my next reviews will be about Kendare Blakes´ three murderous queens …

How is it about you?

Happy reading & listening

Welcome

Vi
I am an avid reader, book blogger, and painter who loves to talk and write about books. A day without one in my hands is a wasted one. Skilled florist with a degree in writing - oh yes, that works! I like many genres, but horror is nothing for me. Here on Inkvotary I will show my love for books, things that move me and what´s going on off the blog - called life. The personal as well as life in general.
