Waiting On Wednesday #64 – Shelter In Place by Nora Roberts

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

This new book by Nora Roberts is one that tells me so far nothing over its cover. I like it, no question, with all the blue, the lighthouse and the water – but until I wrote this post, I didn´t really know what the novel would be about. I am not sure if I will like this novel, but I am sure that I want to read it. The fact, that the author is writing about an unfortunately very current topic, kind of gives me hope that such evil things won´t be forgotten. This sounds very awkward, and I realize that while writing it, but I can´t find another way to describe my feelings. The author doesn´t take things lightly, not when it comes to a very serious background. And my hope is, that she is dealing with this sad topic the same way in this book as she deals with other serious things in her other novels. That there might be a bit of healing…

So, this is my pick for this Waiting On Wednesday and yes, I am looking forward to its arrival.

Shelter In Place
Author Nora Roberts
Publishing Date May 29, 2018
Publisher St. Martin´s Press
Format Hardcover
Goodreads

It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video-game store tending to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to bury the memory of huddling in a ladies´ room, hopelessly clutching her cell phone – until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art. But one person wasn´t satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait – and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

Happy reading & waiting on

Take Control TBR Challenge March 2018 – Sign Up

It is that time of year again. Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer is doing her Sixth annual Take Control of Your TBR Pile Challenge. The logo is different from the one we had last year but as pretty as the other one. Rules have a bit changed, from what I can see. I listed them at the end of this post.
But there will be again a grand prize of your choice. And a Twitter Party. So, motivation is given *smile* If you like to know what my goal for this challenge is, or what you´ll have to do to participate, keep reading.

With this challenge, I will focus on the entire month of March on reading/listening to books in my TBR pile released before March 1, 2018. Meaning they can be eBooks, physical books or audiobooks. I will try to clean off those shelves and finish those series and trilogies! Hopefully.

No matter how hard I try, every year turns out to be the same. I get new books en masse and my to-be-read pile is standing in one corner of the room and giving me a look of reproach – if a book pile can do that *smile*

My Goal

4 books

Sounds not much, but I´d rather keep it low this time. And I am not sure if I will be able to achieve that since March is always a busy month for me. But I am eager to read as much as I can. Good, I will have to read some new releases during March too, where I have a deadline to fulfill. But I don´t think that that will have a huge impact on my time schedule. At least I hope not.

I will have to see if I am able to attend the Twitter Party since I am over in Europe and doing something in the middle of the night isn´t always as fun as it sounds. I hope that won´t disqualify me.

Rules

  • Link-up! This is open to everyone. If you do not have a blog, then link a shelf entitled Take Control 2018 from your Goodreads account. It is a good idea to friend Kimberly if your shelves are private.
  • Create a Goals/Update/Results post (can be combined). It can also be a shelf on Goodreads. Be sure to friend Kimberly so she can see it.
  • The Challenge starts midnight March 1, 2018, and ends March 31, 2018, at 11:59 pm.
  • Read/listen to books from your TBR pile.
  • All books/audios must have been published before March 1, 2018. Kimberly doesn´t care where you got them, so old ARC´s count too.
  • Post a review to Goodreads, or your blog then add the URL link to the Rafflecopter for an entry. (These can be a mini review. Just one or two sentences).
  • You can combine events, challenges etc.
  • Page count must be over 100 pages to qualify.
  • The Rafflecopter will only allow you to enter up to two books daily, so update as soon as you finish a book.
  • Use hashtag #TakeControlTBR
  • Twitter Party March 11, 2018, at 2:30 pm (CST). Come chat about books you have read and win prizes.
  • Earn extra entries for participating in the Twitter Party.
  • Rafflecopter will close on April 2, 2018, at midnight and a winner will be chosen within 72 hours. Open internationally as long as Book Depository ships to you. Prize: New 2018 release valued at up to 20 US dollars or 1 Audiobook Credit from Audiobooks.com. Kimberly will do pre-orders as well (may request eBook copy from Amazon or B& N).

Most of the drill is familiar. Grab the image from Caffeinated Reviewer and share the event. The chance to sign-up (just click the word and you are right there) for this challenge ends on March 3rd. Don´t forget to link back to the sign-up post over at her blog so friends can join in.

Okay, enough of the talking. Let´s have some fun here.

Happy reading to all of us!

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #55 – Springlike Weather But Chilly Air

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #55

Thanks to Fischer Sauerländer, a German publisher, I had The Tale of Shikanoko – Lord of the Darkwood by Lian Hearn in the mail. A great surprise that made me very happy.

Review Copy

I bought Hardline by Meredith Wild and Roar by Cora Carmack. Couldn´t resist since they both were on sale *smile* If you like, you can read my Roar-review here.

Sunday Post #12

Well, well, turns out the past week was, so far, the worst I had since the year has started. My two books from Canada got lost between Ontario and Germany, so no happy feelings there. Sure, I got my money back, but I would´ve rather gotten the hardcovers. Lesson learned.

This morning I went outside for a long walk. The weather is beautiful. Freezing air, bright sunshine, and a clear sky. It was fantastic! I went on the route along our small river, watched some mallard ducks and blackbirds having fun in the sun. Seems like we are all enjoying the springlike day before the cold winds from Russia will kick in and bring us temperatures below zero. Guess the snowdrops that are already blooming in our garden will be withered by then.

I am reading

Upcoming Reviews

I will post my reviews in random order. So, the way the covers are shown in this post aren´t carved in stone *smile* Just saying in case you might wonder when you see them get posted ...

Happy reading

The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney

I´ve seen this cover around a bit in the blogosphere lately. And had it in my hands at the library quite a few times. But never took it home. Don´t know why. This was the first time that I´ve read a book by the author. And while writing my review I am struggling to find the right words about my feelings for this thriller.

EMMA. Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable of feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant – and it does. JANE. After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street she is instantly drawn to the space – and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home´s previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same patterns, makes the same choices, crosses paths with the same people and experiences the same terror, as the girl before.
Story
Jane has lost her daughter, the great job she had, and now wants and needs a new start. But with her tight budget, not the easiest thing to achieve. When she sees the house at Folgate Street 1 she is fascinated. Not only by the house itself but the owner as well. A man who lives as disciplined as Jane never could be but lets her wish to get what she´s craving.

Style
I have mixed feelings about this thriller. The end didn´t match with the rest of this book – at least not in my eyes. There were twists and turns towards the end that I thought what in the world? The author uses the characteristic terms narcissistic and anancastic personality to show a very controlled picture of her figures. But, to be honest, I couldn´t connect with it. Not with the various characters that were playing a role here and not with the plot itself. So, no, I am not sharing the excitement every other reader has about this thriller. J.P. Delaney´s style is decent, easy to read, and turns, the more you read this book, more and more to what seems to be an erotic thriller instead of anything else. Only the main figure Jane seems to keep a clear head seems to act rationally. It is, as always, the figure that lives a very invisible life, that is the bad guy. And Jane finds out who is really responsible for Emma´s death. Towards the end, I was shaking my head in disbelief when I read what Jane´s plan had been all along and when Edward suggests his plan to her about the house, I was like WTF?

Characters
The author describes her figures with a few words, shows the reader that all of them have gone through a lot. And she makes it quite clear that not everything is what it seems to be at first sight. Only that you don´t realize it until the last third of this thriller. Emma has a huge problem with food. Likes to have dangerous sex and can´t stand it when she isn´t the center of attention. With that need in her sick head, she lies, intrigues, and plays with all the people around her as if they were dolls. When Jane starts to see the real picture behind the fragile-looking Emma, she starts to understand the real deal behind Folgate Street 1.

Conclusion
I am sorry to have to say that, but I am not sharing the excitement everyone else feels for this thriller. Yes, the psychological finesse is wonderful and some things were not visible until the end for me. But I missed the haunting feeling, the impact that an (at least what I call a great thriller) usually has on me. So, this one is only average for me. Maybe you´ll like it more, who knows.

Happy reading

Tödliche Sehnsucht by Sandra Brown

Holy moly, this book (original Friction) was one hell of a fantastic read! And so far, at least in my eyes, the best thriller written by the author. And believe me, I´ve read many of her books already and this one makes me look forward to her next book. Thank god it is already published, so I only have to go and get it *smile* Sandra Brown is the author who knows how to combine psychological finesse with tension and a hint of romance without being cheesy. And yes, I am repeating myself; her thrillers are one hell of reading pleasure.

Crawford Hunt wants his daughter back. After the death of his wife, the Texas Ranger is in a downward spiral, has been demoted to office work and had to give away his five-year-old daughter because of a court order. Now he has his life under control again, but the fate of his little family is in the hands of Judge Holly Spencer. Although she realizes that he loves his child above all but is unsure whether he can really take responsibility. However, Holly´s opinion changes abruptly as an armed man shows up during the hearing and Crawford can barely save her from a bullet. But the culprit is not caught and remains a threat. Crawford wants to protect Holly – but the forbidden attraction between the two does not make it easy for him … (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Crawford is nervous. He is about to fight for his daughter in court and knows that he must show his best side to convince the judge. But the moment he sees that armed man walking into the courtroom his instincts kick in and judge Holly Spencer never gets a chance to speak the words that would give him his daughter back. Instead, he finds himself in the middle of an even greater nightmare.

Style
I am simply a huge fan of the authors´ writing style. Her brilliantly created plot, the psychological finesse, the twists, and turns, how she raises the tension page by page, how she uses a language that is on the edge of obscenity but always on a high writing-level and with an elegant swing – all that and much more is what makes Sandra Brown vivid at what she does. There isn´t one single boring line in this book. Not a minute where you are tempted to ask where the hell this will lead or where you get annoyed by something. Instead many conflicts, hot feelings, and scenes that give you the chills – but in a good way. Where you sense that something isn´t right, that there must be something else to give everything happening sense in some way. And just before the end, you read that one sentence that makes it all so crystal clear.

Characters
A caring father, or better said, two, are the actual main figures who give this thriller the special something. One is blind with hate while the other is only seeing the luck and well-being of his beloved little girl.

It is adorable to watch how Crawford literally does everything to protect his daughter from evil. The scene where he jumps to save her in the last third of the book is one of the most beautiful scenes I´ve ever read in a book *sigh* All his actions are meant to bring him one step closer to get his daughter back. But he isn´t the perfect guy who gets everything with the hint of a smile. No. He makes mistakes, shows his weak spot without losing his manhood or appearing less male and is as vulnerable as you can imagine. I´m just wondering how a real man should ever exist next to such a fictional dream character, Sandra Brown has created with Crawford *smile* What a man …

Conclusion
Bloody hell, that was brilliant! After reading Friction I was in a very emotional mood. Crawford has managed, without me realizing it, to sneak into my heart. Not with words, but mostly because of his actions. He is - I say it again - vulnerable and yet the most male man I´ve ever had the pleasure to read about in a book. Holy heck, that guy is giving me … ahem, not going there, nope …

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #63 – A Court Of Frost And Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I am a Sarah J. Maas fan for many years. I was listening to the audiobook of the first book of this series at first. Then I switched to the hardcover and continued reading the story of ACOTAR. Now, my shelf contains No. 2 and 3 as well (not read yet) and it seems that I´ll have some binge-reading ahead of me *smile*

But still, I am looking forward to this new one, though I am a bit torn back and forth on this cover. I like it, yes, but I am not as thrilled as I was when I saw the first three for the first time. Maybe that´ll change when I see it live in my hands ...

Feyre, Rhys, and their close-knit circle of friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly-changed world beyond. But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve. Yet even the festive atmosphere can´t keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated – scars that will have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

Why I Read Romance

Today is Valentine´s Day and I thought why not do this today after I have it on my to-do list for so long. Good, I might not do it the way Rachel at parajunkee offered it with her thirteen numbers in her post, but hey, writing about romance on the day where almost everyone is celebrating love, isn´t wrong, is it? And what genre shows that best as the romance genre?

Why I Read Romance?

I read romance because I like to remember this thrilling butterfly-moment during the first kiss I shared with him. I kind of relive that every time I read a first kiss scene in a romance novel. Or the moment when they first met, share their first eye contact and the air is on fire. Yap, now I sound a bit cheesy, but I can´t help it.

Reading romance means, I have an easy-to-read novel in my hands. That I share with the characters the ups and downs you have while falling in love. The sheer excitement of the figures when they at first fight their feelings or when they share this love-at-first-sight moment and still have other things to think of before they go all in or jump right in head over heels.

Yes, reading romance means leaning back, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee while reading and diving deep into a setting with two figures who seem to be meant for each other. I don´t have to think while reading. I just can let the story flow, enjoy the style, the dialogues and have a good time (or not if the novel is bad and I am not getting warm with the author´s style). And, if it isn´t too cheesy, I am actually enjoying romance novels very much.

The first romance novel that I bought was “Shanna” by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss.

Till this day the ultimate romance novel for me. While writing this post I pulled it out of the shelf it is in and looked at the cover. Not sure if publishers would use that kind of style today again, but in some ways, it still seems to fit in our modern times.

In October 2016 I read the modern romance Brave the Heat by Sara Humphreys. I got aware of it when she was promoting her second book in this series, and since I hate starting a series with any book but the first one, I bought it and read it literally overnight. It rocked!

Till next time & happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #54 – Helau And Alaaaf!

Stacking The Shelves #54

This week I can´t provide any new title since I haven´t bought or gotten one. Still waiting for my books to arrive from Canada and all the others I have on pre-order are not due yet.

Sunday Post #11

Ah yes, we have that time of year again – carnival. I am not much of a carnival-fan, and to be honest very pissed that all my favorite TV shows have to give way to the clownish shows they do in Cologne and Mainz where the carnival is mostly celebrated.

Another thing that gives me mixed feelings is something that recently happened on my blog. I went into my statistics and saw to my utter surprise, that around 4480 visits had come in within a few hours. I was like HUH? WHAT IN THE WORLD?! Some further digging showed me that they had all been from Israel. And now I am highly confused and have a big question mark in my head. Still, don´t know what to think of that, and hope that everything is ok with those visits.

The last time I had such a jump in my visitor statistics was when I published a review about a German book and the author retweeted my post. This time I posted another German edition, but I don´t think that those high numbers are a result of that book … strange …

Turns out, I am not happy with one of the challenges I am participating in this year. That challenge seems to be more complicated to handle as the other one and I am not sure if I will keep doing it. On the other hand, I hate to fail in something….

I Am Reading

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

I don´t know how she does it, but Colleen Hoover gave proof again that she can catch you with romance and raw emotions the same way as other authors with their thrillers. Since I have finished this, I haven´t read any other book. I had some in my hands, yes, but I didn´t start reading – the impact this novel had on me has still captured me.

✶✶✶✶✶

Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon´s last day in L.A. together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist. Can Ben´s relationship with Fallon – and simultaneously his novel – be considered a love story if it ends in heartbreak?
Story
Fallon is what the world calls a “natural beauty”. A girl who is blessed with a gift. The gift of being a beautiful girl who has a heart. In Hollywood a rare thing. But since the terrible fire, everything has changed. Her father has turned himself into an ignorant asshole and her mother is the only constant positive and encouraging thing that has remained in her life. And then there is Ben. The stranger who comes to her rescue when her father once more proves that he is as blind and ignorant as selfish and heartless.

Style
The style is soft, easy to read, and yet has such an emotional and stirring impact – holy Christ! How does Colleen do it? I am still not able to tell ya. The story is haunting, sensitive, shows emotions of all different kinds, and is as beautiful as you could wish for. Sure, there are scenes in it that you rather wouldn´t have to read, but they belong in this novel and fit perfectly in. And they give you clues that something isn´t the way it seems at first sight. That there is something to come that will turn everything upside down and back again.

While reading I had to literally remind myself to breathe again because I very often held my breath - the plot was so thrilling, fascinating, and breathtaking. And towards the end, it is even getting more romantic and thrilling despite all the drama that happens at the same time.

Characters
Fallon is a wonderful teenage girl. She has her heart in the right place, is sensitive to others, and knows how to deal with her father when he thinks that he can screw around with her. Not gonna happen. Nope, Sir. But with Ben, her heart is going on a rollercoaster. Fallon is fighting the feelings she is having from the very first second, she meets Ben. And Ben does everything to convince her that they can have both, their love and life. If only Fallon stops searching for answers or jumping to the wrong conclusions …

Conclusion
Holy mother of god, this was amazing! If you´re no Colleen Hoover fan yet, this is the perfect way to start. I am still trying to catch my breath, still trying to calm down and still in an emotional turmoil. And that´s saying something. Grab some tissues – you will need them!

Happy reading

All The Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

This was a recommendation from one of the ladies who is running our library. She told me that they had just gotten it in and that it was a huge hit in the US. So, I had the honor to be the first person to take it home. Well, usually I am not jumping on such arguments, but this one somehow had something, that kind of spoke to me. I am still trying to figure out what exactly the German cover is showing, but on the other hand, I don´t think it is THAT important. Do you?

All The Missing Girls*

Publisher Simon & Schuster on January 31, 2017
Genre Thriller
Pages 400
Format Softcover

✶✶✶✶½

It´s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne´s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched. The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne´s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby, Jackson works at the town bar, and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic´s younger neighbor and the group´s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic´s return, Annaleise goes missing.
Story
Nic has refused to go home for the past ten years. She wants nothing more but to live a normal life, to have a husband, and to be as successful as possible in her job. But when her father tells her that he saw that girl again, she is forced to go back and help him calm down and settle in his new home. If only the past would do the same.

Style
At first, I noticed the short and very concise style. The author shows her reader a little from here and there but never gives you the full picture.  She jumps back and forth between the days, creates that way tension but confuses the reader as well with the fact that there seems to be no structure at all. And the fact, that the story is told backward, and that you read about things that have happened but will be told more detailed later in the book … well… not much helping either. But for some reason, I kept reading. I always had the feeling that if I could only read one more chapter, I might be able to get it. Sounds familiar? *smile* Because one thing is for sure. Megan Miranda has a fantastic psychological finesse built up in this book. You won´t be able to figure out the real story behind the story until the very end.

Despite her nested construction, this thriller is crazy, irritating, extraordinary, and very haunting in its very own way. Believe me, after you´ve started reading, you won´t be able to put it down. At least not, if you are reading the printed book. Don´t know about the audiobook …

Characters
Unlike other thriller authors, Megan Miranda doesn´t give you much of an insight into her figures. She isn´t going too deep into them. Only scratching the surface and giving you a gist that there might be more than you see at first sight. Some of her characters are totally crazy, some of them have no stamina at all while others are so pale and obedient, that it seems eerie and weird.

Corinne is a young, rebellious teenager who has a very creepy way to get what she wants. If Nic does something she wouldn´t usually do, you can bet on it that Corinne is the reason why. Corinne knows exactly how to manipulate the people around her. What to say to make them literally jump. But the moment she steps over her parents´ threshold and goes back inside, she´s not visible anymore.

Conclusion
That was what I call an overnight read. Yes, I literally couldn´t put it down, and though I was supposed to actually sleep, I read it in one swoop. This thriller got something that made it impossible for me to put it down. Only-one-chapter-more was my mantra here, and within no time the night was over. No thriller in the usual style, but for all thriller fans and those who like to read a bit unusual, this is a great opportunity.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #62 – War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

For whatever reason Jill is not blogging since August 2016 but her meme is still going on. Hope everything is ok and she will be back soon! Until then, I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

This week my pick is a book that not only looks very intriguing but also sounds very promising. War Storm by Victoria Aveyard. You may think about the author what you want, but after reading the first three books I surely want to know how everything ends. There are too many loose ends left and even more unanswered questions that the author hopefully will answer before the end of this final book.

Tochter Des Dunklen Waldes by Katharina Seck

A novel with a wonderful basic idea and a very poetic language. What I struggled with was the writing style. Despite that, fantasy is a beautiful aspect of this novel. This is my first book written by the author. I got intrigued by its cover and thought why not give this a try. Katharina Seck has another book I was thinking about reading, but after I´ve finished this, I might drop that plan. Why? Keep reading.

Every sound of the nocturnal forest seemed to tell a story. And not every one of them had a happy ending … The morning forest is prohibited. He is dangerous. Since she can remember, the young Lilah hears warnings about the dark morning forest. Nobody from their village enters him, even though hardly anyone knows what truth and what legend is. But then the body of a woman is found at the edge of the forest. Are the old stories true? Are there monsters in the forest? Lilah will find out. Because at the same time disappears Dorean, the man who belongs to Lilah´s heart. He went to the cursed forest. And Lilah makes a momentous decision: She follows him … (personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Lilah is in turmoil. The man she wants is sick and needs help. Her help. But how can she help him if she isn´t allowed to go into the morning forest? And who killed that strange woman she found close to the border? When one of the elder village people starts to torture her with his hate and rage he obviously has towards her, Lilah starts packing her belongings and to change the path of her life. Following her instincts she discovers a world she never knew existed and that is so much more than just a forest.

Style
If you love a novel with a very poetic language, you might like this very much. And if you also like to read a very long run-on sentence that dominates this novel, then this might be the perfect read for you. Well, for me, it wasn´t. Over the first few pages, it was kind of ok to read them, but the author keeps continuing with that style and after a while, I was exhausted. Everything, even short scenes, were stretched that way, everything was dealt with in a very long and tiring way. From my perspective a sad thing, because the idea of having a tree as your soulmate, from living in unison with nature and sharing the needs and sorrows of nature first hand, seemed very promising and beautiful in one.

Additional to that, the story contains many repetitions. As if the author doesn´t trust her readers´ ability to understand what she is telling on every page this book has. I got it already in the first chapter, that the morning forest was a prohibited area. And that Lilah had to fight her need to go in and to follow her inner voice every day. There was absolutely no need to tell me that on almost every page this novel has. The other thing that bugged me, was, it wasn´t until the last third of the book that it got exciting – and very brutal. Way too late, if you ask me. Not the brutal part, that is something I see as a plus to the other thrilling things that happened. No, what I mean is the fact that the plot all of the sudden got some action. The figures became somehow alive, there was a certain power that came to light, and the until then kind of passive story turned into a very thrilling one. Only it didn´t last long. My joy that the author had finally changed some things, went back to oh, obviously not.

Characters
It was fascinating to watch how Lilah changed from the girl that was following every word her uncle said to the young woman which did what her instincts were telling her. You can literally feel how she struggles, her uncertainty and that she can´t tell the others about that voice in her head whenever she comes close to the morning forest. And then there are her growing feelings for Dorean. The man who keeps his distance but obviously wants more from her than only friendship. Can she trust him? Will she trust him? But why is he only here over the summer? So many questions and no answers.

Conclusion
All in all this book is a bit above average. I would have liked it to be a pleasure read for me, but it wasn´t. I love it when an author knows how to use words when some poetry is in the pages and the characters are well built and you can see some development throughout the plot. And Lilah proofs that this is, what makes great characters so fascinating for us readers. But that alone won´t make a reader start to swoon over a novel. Sad, but this book wasn´t for me. If you´re a fan of a very long sentence, a very bloomy style and a plot that isn´t really visible, this is definitely a novel you should read. If the above said isn´t your thing – don´t touch it.

Happy reading
