A Stranger In The House by Shari Lapena

My first Shari Lapena thriller. It is not the first I´ve got, but the first I´ve read. And with THAT cover you really have no excuse to not want it, do you?! One of my blogging friends was absolutely thrilled about this book and so I thought this could be something I´d like too. It was not at all what I was expecting after reading the summary, and some things I didn´t like much, but in the end, I can say that it was a reading pleasure for me. From the psychological point of view.

You are an angel to your husband, a murderer to the police. You´re preparing dinner for you and your husband when the phone rings – it´s the call you´ve been fearing for years. Shortly afterward you wake up in the hospital. You had an accident – and you can not remember it. When a body is found near the accident site, the police believe in a connection between the two events. Your husband is stunned by this assumption. But you know more than your husband. And suddenly you´re not sure how devious the suspicion of the police really is … (personal translation by © Vi at Inkvotary).

Story
Karen wakes up in the hospital and has no memory of how she got there. Her husband is worried about her because right before his eyes his beloved and adored wife changes from the beautiful angel to a secretive stranger. She is hiding something from him, and the once-great trust in each other seems to have vanished. But why is she that way? Why can´t she tell him what it is that she fears? Or is she simply not the woman he thought she´d be?

Style
Right from the start, the psychological finesse is absolutely thrilling. Nothing is as it seems, and the author uses a very plain language to tell the reader the story of Karen and Robert. And first, I was very intrigued by that. But after a few chapters, I started to get annoyed by Robert. Or better said, by the man, he turned into during the ongoing plot. The conflict Karen is in the way how she lets herself get treated by the police, that she does what she does – all that is brought together in a very good way. The story between the two main figures is not 100 percent perfect, but what kept me at bay was the psychological thing here, not the story around it. That one is a very normal one. But with Robert turning from the strong, happy husband into an emotional mess who can´t stop complaining about what is now and what they lost (the happy marital life) that was a bit too much.

The way how the author shows that conflict, how she brings things together, all the twists and turns in this thriller was wonderful to read. And the end was nothing I had expected. I assumed something like that but wasn´t really sure.

Characters
There are some figures in this thriller, I wasn´t very fond of. And Robert is one of them. He looks at first as if he is a loving and caring husband who totally adores his wife. There is nothing she could do wrong to make him angry it seemed. But after a while, he changes. He gets distrustful. Everything Karen does, he scrutinizes. Every word, every move by her and he can´t say if it is true or just a terrible game. Where has the angel he married, gone? Yes, those are all things that occur when you are in the attention of the police and can´t remember anything that led you to the point where you are now. But why all the moaning over everything your partner does? And Robert is moaning a lot. He is completely out of balance. Karen does one move and he is asking himself why she did that. She is saying something he doesn´t want to hear and he is thinking why is she now like this? At first, it was an element, that gave this story some tension, but then? Sure, some complaining is ok, and if you feel like something has changed dramatically after the accident your wife has had, that is fine too. But all the time? No, that isn´t fine anymore. And Brigid is just sick. She wants what she can´t have. Wants to live a life that´s not hers and her biggest desire is to become a person, she isn´t. I didn´t like her at all.

Conclusion
In the end. I was left with some mixed feelings and a bit disappointed. Didn´t really know what to think of this thriller. I absolutely liked the psychological finesse in the story, but the story itself wasn´t really mine. I had expected a bit more after reading the summary, but this book couldn´t quite deliver. But despite that, I had a really good time reading it. Sounds confusing, I know, but that´s how I feel about this book.

Happy reading

Prinzessin Undercover- Geheimnisse by Connie Glynn

The cover of this book (Orig. The Rosewood Chronicles-Undercover Princess) is beautiful. And I love how the German publisher created the book inside. Looks so lovely without being kitschy. Oh, I love that! Despite that, I struggled some time how to rate it. Am I giving it the ones I wrote down in my notes the moment I finished reading? Or do I change it? If you want to find out, keep reading *smile* Don´t know why that is, but the rating was not easy for me, though it was a nice read. Or does the word “nice” here says it all?

Ellie is a real princess, who wants nothing more than to lead a normal life. Lottie is a normal girl who wants nothing more than to be a princess. When those two of them have to share a room at Rosewood Hall boarding school, the solution is obvious: they secretly swap roles. But in Rosewood not everyone is who he seems to be, and a secret organization is after the princess – without knowing which one is the real one. Only with courage, determination and absolute loyalty can the friends save each other. Because princess is more than a title – Princess you are in the heart! (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Lottie has done everything in her power to get a place a Rosewood Hall. A school where you can´t go just like that. Rosewood Hall is a school for the privileged. The rich and famous. For everyone but her. A little girl from a small town with no parents. But Rosewood Hall means to escape from her life with an envy aunt and a world in which she´ll never fit in. And who wouldn´t want to be a princess or a girl who´s got everything?

Style
The author uses an easy to read a language and shows a setting in which everything is important. Many secrets fly through the air, not everything is as it seems at first sight, and envy and resentment is a daily thing Lottie has to deal with. While reading this novel, I had some fun and thought it is very entertaining. And then there were moments where the story wasn´t really round. Some dissonance became visible and everything seemed without any structure and completely confusing. Why would Ellie do this the way she did it and why had Lottie such problems to open her mouth and say what she wanted to say? She isn´t shy, not at all, but among the rich and famous she looks like a lamb that was brought to the butcher.

Characters
As much as I liked Lottie, but the fact that she wasn´t able to correct misunderstandings the moment they were happening, drove me crazy. Lottie can talk like a waterfall if necessary and when in rage and stand her ground. But when it really counts, her mouth is as shut as an oyster. Despite that, she´s in desperate need to do everything right. To dress right (or at least the way how she understands that a princess has to dress), to say the right things, to do the right things, and – oh holy heck, I guess you get the picture!

No question, she´s the complete opposite from Ellie. Which is quite refreshing while reading this novel. But sometimes I was wondering what exactly IS the true relationship between her and Lottie? Because to be honest, if any fourteen-year-old girls behave like the two behave with each other, then I am close to calling them anything but “just friends”. I might be wrong, but who knows?

Conclusion
I guess this book you´ll either love or hate. For me, it is something between. Over many chapters, I had great fun reading it and watching the problems unfold. On the other side, I am not sure what to think of Lottie. Ellie is one heck of a great girl, and I love her for being the way she is. But Lottie? Not sure if I´ll cry or laugh over her actions.

Happy reading

Cecilia-Wenn Die Sterne Schleier Tragen by Anna Nigra

Anna Nigra is a German author and this book is her debut novel. It is a novel about love and war and shows us a society that is similar to ours and yet totally different. It was unexpected, brutal, bloody, and left me with a cliffhanger I am still not sure if I read that right.
Yap, sometimes that happens with me and a novel.

Marry a stranger? Cecilia cannot believe what her father is asking her to do! She is only 18 and her future husband is the Crown Prince of Europe! But the king desperately wants Cecilia as the wife of his son. He would not tolerate a no. Reluctantly Cecilia travels with her family to the royal palace to meet her husband-to-be. To her great relief, the 21-year-old Prince Noran is not only good-looking, but also charming and loving. But his spirited brother Elias also teases Cecilia with his provocative style. And as if two handsome men, a jealous sister, and an impatient king were not enough, an incredible intrigue seems to be woven in the palace … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Cecilia is destined to marry a future king. The future king of Europe, to be exact. Noran is a few years older, and not at all like his father, the current king. But Cecilia isn´t sure if she wants to marry him at all, despite his charming way and handsome look. And then there is his brother Elias. Wild, handsome as hell, and with a secret that makes Cecilia understand the world a bit better. How will she decide when the time has come and she needs to make a decision?

Style
Somewhat old-fashioned in style, here a world is unfolded before the reader, where women are only seeming to be jewelry for the powerful men and where society is on the brink of war. It is unfortunate, but although there are some fierce scenes in this novel, and the characters are in part anything but harmless and nice, I found the story all in all kind of bland. I missed that certain something, the momentum that keeps the reader even over the slightly stretched scenes at the bar. And the plot had started so well. Linguistically, the novel is simple and easy to read. A bit old-fashioned, as I said earlier in this review, but nonetheless readable. The world is reorganized, Europe is ruled by a king, and society has changed a lot. Not always for the better. But even that could not distract from the sometimes very cramped and often illogical plot or could convince me to see this novel as anything but average. And unfortunately, the novel is also very predictable in some places, seems constructed.

Characters
As good as the individual figures are partly created, it has disturbed me massively that Cecilia is not allowed to decide for herself. She has to do what her father wants her to do. No questions asked from her side. And the fact, that her father acts strangely the second Cecilia and her family arrives at the palace, told me everything. The classic love triangle, a woman between two men, is not particularly convincing and is not new either. As smart as Cecilia looks at the beginning of this novel, as much was I wondering why she was acting the way she acted. Yes, she´s a young woman, not even twenty, but she has a brain, doesn´t she? But she presents the reader a very naïve side of her – or is she supposed to be a naïve young woman who doesn´t know anything about the world?

Conclusion
For readers who have no great expectations and just want something nice to read, the novel is a good grip on the shelves. Unfortunately, the novel did not convince me. Too bad, but my expectations due to the promising back text and the beautiful cover were probably set too high – the novel could not keep the promise. I am sorry to say that but for me only an average novel.

Children Of Blood And Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Tomi Adeyemi, your book is EPIC! I am still trying to find words, to tell how I feel about it. This novel is one of those, you can´t just read and then go back to your normal business. Even after finishing it, I can feel the aftermath of its impact on me. Children of Blood and Bone is without a doubt one of the book sensations, if not THE sensation, of the year. You are thrown into a world of magic, colors, heat, and hate that is beyond everything you´ve ever experienced in your entire life. At least I feel that way.

✶✶✶✶½

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie´s Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed once magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, the maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess. Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good. Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leopanaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest threat may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers – and her growing feelings for an enemy.
Story
Zélie is full of rage. A rage she feels since the day her mother was taken away and killed by a reckless king. A king who doesn´t protect the ones who are born on the wrong side of his world and believes. Magic is the downfall for his kingdom and with that comes brutality, the killing of innocent and a bloodbath that is one of its kind. But Zélie wants to do everything it takes to free herself and all those who are just like her. And so, she soon finds herself in a position, she never wanted. And she has to learn, that she never knew how brutal the king can become.

Style
The cover got me first. It looks dramatic with its stark color contrast. But not too dramatic that you can´t look at it. Know what I mean? Back then, I didn´t know that it shows some of the most important things this novel contains. My compliments to those, who created it. Great job.

Children of Blood and Bone is a Young Adult novel like no other. There is a power in it, magic I´ve rarely seen before. Without using many words, the author creates a story that draws you all in. I could literally feel the blazing heat of the sun, smell all the different things while Zélie was walking across the marked and was climbing with them in the mountains. This book is mind-blowing, gripping, outstanding, visually stunning, and absolutely thrilling from the first word to the last. But if you are now looking for a fast-paced story with loud tones, you are wrong. The author doesn´t need to yell at her readers to make them to want more or to get her readers´ attention. She uses the beauty of a continent combined with some well thought through action scenes, the main figure who is full of doubts and rage but above all, she brings you close to something, this world needs more than anything else: the belief in magic. No matter what sort you prefer. This novel gives it to you with ease. Tomi Adeyemi created her world of Orïsha in a decent but keen tone. Every word is well measured, every scene well created, and nothing happens without a purpose. The journey Zélie is on is full of tragedy, hope, hate, loss and still, you can see that she isn´t willing to give up.

Characters
How in the world can a prince, a future king be so shallow? All I saw after a while was a young man, who really believes that his father is right and that if he can convince Zélie, to give up everything that makes her who she is, his shattered world will be fixed again. The truth: he is a horrible coward. A man without a spine. One moment he promises Zélie the world, the next he betrays her. Seeing the truth with his own eyes isn´t helping either. He is as blind as a man can be. But the worst about him: he betrays even himself.

It is amazing to see what different kinds of characters the author has created in this novel. There is a queen who does everything to keep her daughter away from real life. A queen who is as overprotective as possible, kept in a world of opulence, and who does everything to make it clear that only the rich and of noble birth are worth being fought for. A king who is as cruel and ice-cold as you can imagine. And so full of fear of things he doesn´t understand or can´t control, that he does everything to keep himself and his family safe. Even for the wrong reasons. A young princess, full of life, but as naïve and untrained for real life as you can imagine. Her secret is dramatic and shows the reader the moment she reveals it, that not everything is all sugar and flowers at the palace.

Conclusion
I have no clue how the author will top that first book of her trilogy. IF this is to top at all. Which I am not sure either. One thing is sure. Children of Blood and Bone is diversified, rich in emotions, strong scenes, and a brilliant writing style. You won´t be able to lay it aside, not even for one minute. The story is haunting, full of variety, and shows you a world of beauty, darkness, and legends you just can´t get enough of. And after that end, I am looking forward to the next book. How could you do this to your readers, Tomi Adeyemi?!

Happy reading
