Tomi Adeyemi, your book is EPIC! I am still trying to find words, to tell how I feel about it. This novel is one of those, you can´t just read and then go back to your normal business. Even after finishing it, I can feel the aftermath of its impact on me. Children of Blood and Bone is without a doubt one of the book sensations, if not THE sensation, of the year. You are thrown into a world of magic, colors, heat, and hate that is beyond everything you´ve ever experienced in your entire life. At least I feel that way.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie´s Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed once magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, the maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess. Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good. Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leopanaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest threat may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers – and her growing feelings for an enemy.
Story
Zélie is full of rage. A rage she feels since the day her mother was taken away and killed by a reckless king. A king who doesn´t protect the ones who are born on the wrong side of his world and believes. Magic is the downfall for his kingdom and with that comes brutality, the killing of innocent and a bloodbath that is one of its kind. But Zélie wants to do everything it takes to free herself and all those who are just like her. And so, she soon finds herself in a position, she never wanted. And she has to learn, that she never knew how brutal the king can become.

Style
The cover got me first. It looks dramatic with its stark color contrast. But not too dramatic that you can´t look at it. Know what I mean? Back then, I didn´t know that it shows some of the most important things this novel contains. My compliments to those, who created it. Great job.

Children of Blood and Bone is a Young Adult novel like no other. There is a power in it, magic I´ve rarely seen before. Without using many words, the author creates a story that draws you all in. I could literally feel the blazing heat of the sun, smell all the different things while Zélie was walking across the marked and was climbing with them in the mountains. This book is mind-blowing, gripping, outstanding, visually stunning, and absolutely thrilling from the first word to the last. But if you are now looking for a fast-paced story with loud tones, you are wrong. The author doesn´t need to yell at her readers to make them to want more or to get her readers´ attention. She uses the beauty of a continent combined with some well thought through action scenes, the main figure who is full of doubts and rage but above all, she brings you close to something, this world needs more than anything else: the belief in magic. No matter what sort you prefer. This novel gives it to you with ease. Tomi Adeyemi created her world of Orïsha in a decent but keen tone. Every word is well measured, every scene well created, and nothing happens without a purpose. The journey Zélie is on is full of tragedy, hope, hate, loss and still, you can see that she isn´t willing to give up.

Characters
How in the world can a prince, a future king be so shallow? All I saw after a while was a young man, who really believes that his father is right and that if he can convince Zélie, to give up everything that makes her who she is, his shattered world will be fixed again. The truth: he is a horrible coward. A man without a spine. One moment he promises Zélie the world, the next he betrays her. Seeing the truth with his own eyes isn´t helping either. He is as blind as a man can be. But the worst about him: he betrays even himself.

It is amazing to see what different kinds of characters the author has created in this novel. There is a queen who does everything to keep her daughter away from real life. A queen who is as overprotective as possible, kept in a world of opulence, and who does everything to make it clear that only the rich and of noble birth are worth being fought for. A king who is as cruel and ice-cold as you can imagine. And so full of fear of things he doesn´t understand or can´t control, that he does everything to keep himself and his family safe. Even for the wrong reasons. A young princess, full of life, but as naïve and untrained for real life as you can imagine. Her secret is dramatic and shows the reader the moment she reveals it, that not everything is all sugar and flowers at the palace.

Conclusion
I have no clue how the author will top that first book of her trilogy. IF this is to top at all. Which I am not sure either. One thing is sure. Children of Blood and Bone is diversified, rich in emotions, strong scenes, and a brilliant writing style. You won´t be able to lay it aside, not even for one minute. The story is haunting, full of variety, and shows you a world of beauty, darkness, and legends you just can´t get enough of. And after that end, I am looking forward to the next book. How could you do this to your readers, Tomi Adeyemi?!

Happy reading
