Weekly Book Wrap-Up #77 – New Heat Record!

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #77

No books have arrived, at least not that I am aware of. Sorry.

Sunday Post #34

I am late with my post, I know, but I wasn´t sure if I would have the time to write one at all. Since 9 am this morning I am busy getting the new design up and running (not everything is working perfectly yet or looks perfect, but I am working on it) and started to edit and format all the posts, that were published under the old design. Writing posts is totally different now and I still have to make myself familiar with the way how posts appear now. So please be patient with me *smile*

The past week was one of the hottest in Germany since they record weather data. We reached 108 F as the highest ever measured temperature in this country and literally every day a new heat record was broadcasted in the news. It is insane. We don´t even have August yet, the month we usually get the big heat, but already had those insanely high temperatures.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #104 – Ashlords by Scott Reintgen

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

Alone reading the summary sounds thrilling. Horse racing, fire, and riders who will compete with each other and risking their lives to win that seem to be a novel I want to read.

And the cover – holy moly!

This book will be the first part of a (so far unnamed) dilogy.

Ashlords
Author Scott Reintgen
Publishing Date January 21, 2020
Publisher Crown Books For Young Readers
Format Hardcover
Goodreads

Every year since the Ashlords were gifted phoenix horses by their gods, they´ve raced them. First into battle, then on great hunts, and finally for the pure sport of seeing who rode the fastest. Centuries of blood and fire carved their competition into a more modern spectacle: The Races. Over the course of a multi-day event, elite riders from clashing cultures vie to be crowned champion. But the modern version of the sport requires more than good riding. Competitors must be skilled at creating and controlling phoenix horses made of ash and alchemy, which are summoned back to life each sunrise with uniquely crafted powers to cover impossible distances and challenges before bursting into flames at sunset. But good alchemy only matters if a rider knows how to defend their phoenix horse at night. Murder is outlawed, but breaking bones and poisoning ashes? That´s all legal and encouraged. In this year´s Races, eleven riders will compete, but three of them have more to lose than the rest – a champion´s daughter, a scholarship entrant, and a revolutionary´s son. Who will attain their own dream of glory? Or will they all flame out in defeat?

Simon Thorn And The Wolf´s Den by Aimée Carter

The cover of the German edition kind of fascinated me. This book was worth every second of my time. Holy moly, what a great start. One of the very few books I call an overnight read. Filled with action, a great story, emotions, and the great setting of New York. I mean, the idea, to use the Central Park Zoo in New York as a setting for another world right among the normal one, is pretty fascinating. I could literally see the academy in front of me.

Simon Thorn And The Wolf´s Den
by Aimée Carter
Simon Thorn Series #1
Publisher Bloomsbury USA Childrens on February 2, 2016
Genre Fantasy
Pages 307
Format Hardcover
Source Library
Goodreads
✶✶✶✶½

Twelve-year-old Simon Thorn´s life has never been easy or normal, but things, like being bullied at school and living in a cramped Manhattan apartment with his Uncle Darryl are nothing compared to his biggest secret. He can talk to animals. But when his mom is suddenly kidnapped by a herd of rats, Simon finds out that he, his mom, and his uncle are all Animalgams-people born with the ability to change into an animal at will. In search of his mom, Simon discovers the Animalgam Academy based at the Central Park Zoo. There he learns about the fractured five kingdoms – Mammals, Birds, Insects, Reptiles, and Underwater – that make up this secret world … and realizes he may be the only one who can save it.
Story
Simon can hear and understand animals. Not the noises other boys hear when a dog is barking, he literally can talk with them like he talks to his uncle or mother. If she is around, that is. It all started a year ago and now he is afraid of being crazy. And when his mother suddenly appears for a visit and hundreds of rats line the street, he knows that something is completely wrong.

Style
Aimée Carter uses a wonderfully to read, fast-paced writing style and easy to understand words. The story is diverse, filled with surprises and unexpected twists and turns. And the main figure, Simon, is one heck of a great character. Imagine walking through Central Park and pigeons are on the way. You see an eagle flying high up in the air and some dogs with their humans. The author has created such a fantastic world with her Animalgam world, that every page is pure discovery. And the end – oh boy! Full of tension, action, and the brutality of a man who wants the power of a single item more than anything in the world. Holy smokes!

Characters
It is amazing how profound and well created the figures are. Even the evil ones. Simon is a thin, down to earth boy who misses his mother a lot and silently endures the harassment of his stronger classmates. Only offer no attack surface. He is always willing to help the helpless and does everything within his power to do good. Even if that means that he has to ignore the order to stay at the academy. He wants to help his mother, and therefore he has to go outside. And with his new friends, he is sure that he will find her and be able to get her back home.

Conclusion
I am thrilled! What a great book and the main figure. This novel teaches you a lot, even me, a grown-up. And the setting of New York and Central Park is perfect. The fight between good and evil is diversified and great entertainment. I highly recommend this for children of all ages.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #103 – The Last Widow by Karin Slaughter

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I am a Karin Slaughter fan since I discovered her Grant County series with the thriller Blindsighted.
And today I am presenting her newest thriller in her Georgia series. Good, it will be out very soon, but I only discovered it at the publisher´s website this morning. Yep, I know, sometimes … And because the German edition will be published first (don´t ask me why that is) and I could read both, languages I mean, I am presenting both editions.

The Last Widow
Author Karin Slaughter

Georgia Series #6
Publishing Date August 20, 2019

One of Atlanta´s busiest and most important neighborhood´s has been bombed – the location of Emory University, two major hospitals, the FBI headquarters, and the CDC.
A diabolic enemy.
Medical examiner Sara Linton and her partner Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to the scene – and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy thousands of innocent lives. When the assailants abduct Sara, Will goes undercover to save her and prevent a massacre – putting his own life on the line for the woman and the country he loves.

War Storm by Victoria Aveyard

As much as I am fascinated by the gorgeous cover, I am not much fascinated by the story behind it. What in the world was that?! What a pleasure reading Red Queen has been. But this here? A long story but nothing you could connect with.

War Storm
by Victoria Aveyard
Red Queen Series #4
Publisher Harper Teen on May 15, 2018
Genre Fantasy
Pages 657
Format Hardcover

✶✶✶
Victory comes at a price. Mare Barrow learned this all too well when Cal´s betrayal nearly destroyed her. Now determined to protect her heart – and secure freedom for Reds and newbloods like her – Mare resolves to overthrow the kingdom of Norta once and for all … starting with the crown on Maven´s head. But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal´s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolish everything – and everyone – in his path. War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will little lightning girl be forever silenced?
Story
Mare is desperate. Cal has chosen his throne and crown over her. He wants her to be by his side, but not as his queen but as his mistress. But Mare can´t forget what she had to do and how much she had suffered while under Maven´s brutal reign. She still wants her people to be free. But that freedom seems far away and not only her love is at stake.

Style
I don´t know if it means anything, but I had to read the last chapter of King´s Cage again, while I started reading War Storm. I needed to go back into the story to understand the first chapter of the fourth book at all. The scenes in War Storm told me things I couldn´t remember or combine with the figures or setting, so re-reading a bit was in order. Something I usually don´t need to do. And THAT tells me a lot. Although the story continues seamlessly where part 3 left off. Good, the author hasn´t changed her style, or at least not much. But else? The only thing that made me laugh out loud was a scene where a man talks with Mare during dinner and that in a way that showed that being a queen isn´t everything. It was hilarious!

But in the end, I was disappointed. Despite the fact that I had some trouble reading this novel from start to end, I couldn´t see what the point was. Sure, the book starts with some great action and scenes, I say only dinner scene, but the rest? A long listing of fights, dialogues I had the impression that I´ve read them before and strategic war things I was not at all interested in. And the end couldn´t satisfy me either. That seemed so constructed.

Characters
Good, the author shows again a big variety of emotions, thinking, and what every figure wants, but the way how she turned that into a story was sometimes a bit overwhelming. Sure, Mare has changed. Who would not after all she´s been through? She still fights for what she believes in, for what she wants for her people, and yet I was missing something.

Conclusion
Either my expectations were way too high or I thought that after the great start Red Queen has had, the greatness would continue until the end. Didn´t happen. For my taste, the novel is way too long and so confusing at times, that I barely managed to keep reading. Sad, but that was not the ending I had hoped the Red Queen series would get. But the cover is a real beauty.

Happy reading

Stacking The Shelves #76

During the past week, some new books arrived. And I am a bit disappointed. For some reason, I had thought that "Under Currents" would have a strong and shiny dust-jacked but no. A bit sad. Well …

Bought Books

Sunday Post #33

The past week I was busy working on my blog´s new design and giving it a new direction. I don´t know why it is, but in the past weeks, I was thinking a lot about my life, how I see myself, how others see me, and reflected on everything I´ve done and achieved so far. With the result, I am not really happy. Can´t say that I am proud. But at least I start to see some things a bit clear.

The only sunshine I felt, emotionally speaking, was when I finally got my Under Currents copy. Didn´t last long though. Some douche bag packed the book into a big plastic bag they normally use for clothes. Result: damaged book. Good, they will send me another one and hopefully, that one is in good shape. But still …

Can it be that Mozilla Firefox has changed its design? The background of the browser looks awful and even changing it into a brighter one doesn´t help. Looks still awful. Not amused *lol*

Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts

I LOVE Nora Roberts. She is the Queen of Romance and reading her books is one heck of a pleasure. Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. This one is definitely the a-bit-more category. Whiskey Beach was a pure reading pleasure. It started with a gorgeous cover design. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it and it was clear that I wanted to read it as soon as possible.

Whiskey Beach
by Nora Roberts
Publisher G.P. Putnam´s Sons on April 16, 2013
Genre Contemporary Romance
Pages 484
Format Hardcover
Source Purchased
Goodreads
✶✶✶✶✶
For more than three hundred years, Bluff House has sat above Whiskey Beach, guarding its shore – and its secrets. But to Eli Landon, it´s home. A Boston lawyer, Eli has weathered an intense year of public scrutiny and police investigation after being accused of – but never arrested for - the murder of his soon-to-be ex-wife. He finds sanctuary at Bluff House, even though his beloved grandmother is in Boston recuperating from a nasty fall. Abra Walsh is always there, though. Whiskey Beach´s resident housekeeper, yoga instructor, jewelry maker, and massage therapist, Abra is a woman of many talents – including helping Eli take control of his life and clear his name. But as they become entangled in each other, they find themselves caught in a net that stretches back for centuries – one that has ensnared a man intent on reaping the rewards of destroying Eli Landon once and for all.
Story
Eli Landon has been through a year of pain, observation, and self-doubt. The once so energetic defense lawyer is only a shadow of himself. His return to Bluff House, the home of the Landon family, is to help him regain his self and heal his wounds. He wants to finish his book and find out about the cruel murder of his wife. The cheerful housekeeper Abra wants to help him with this and her vision of life gradually opens the door to a happy and fulfilled life for Eli. But an uninvited intruder threatens to destroy the new luck again and another murder catapults Eli again the sights of the investigators – Eli decides to step out of defense.

Style
Highly refined, Nora Roberts has combined thriller-elements with a love story and an ancient legend about a century-old treasure – giving a fabulous atmosphere. In doing so, the author remains true to her gentle word and style of writing. But it never gets boring. On the contrary, with each line, the fascination, and enthusiasm for the novel increase, and it is extremely difficult to put the title out of the hands for just a minute. The beautiful landscape descriptions contribute to the fact that you can literally smell the smell of the water, the scent of spring, and hear the howling of the storm. In this novel act two main characters to whom the author has given a not so easy past. While Elis suffers from the terrible murder suspicion of his wife, Abra has to struggle with the trauma of a stalker and the associated psychological terror – even if she does not realize that at first.

Nora Roberts brings the corresponding abysses to light with a lot of sensitivity, lets the reader look behind the façade of the two characters piece by piece, and helps them in the course of the story to an incredible transformation.

Characters
A character has cast a spell on me: Hester Hawkin Landon - Eli´s grandmother. An agile, spiritually young lady, who once lost her heart to his grandfather and his home, Bluff House. The way she talks to her grandson, encourages him, her way of thinking, her feelings, and how she struggles to her feet with an iron will, impressed me deeply.

Abra is at first glance an absolutely fun-loving and happy woman. But she, too, has most brutally experienced the unpleasant side of love, and now lives intensely and consciously every day on Whiskey Beach. She is an ace at the stove, sees yoga as an elixir of life, and has magical hands when it comes to releasing tension. A strong and yet delicate woman with a heart of gold.

Conclusion
Absolutely atmospheric, exciting, extremely emotional, gentle, haunting, and wonderfully harmonious. Whiskey Beach is a beautiful novel, which has just the right mix of excitement, love, hate, and thriller. Combined with a breathtaking landscape and picturesque locations, this novel offers everyone delightfully entertaining hours. For Nora Roberts fans a must-have, I´d say. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

To be honest, I am not sure why I wanna read this book. Is it the goddess factor, the dead soul thing, or the fact all things together sound a bit weird (in a good way) and seem to be a mix of fantasy, YA and I don´t know what? Does my writing make sense at all? Guess, I am about to find out when this book will be published.

Sunday Post #32

The past week has been a very quiet one. Except for the usual madness a family and friends can bring with, I was able to do a lot of maintenance work on my blog and search for a new template. Yap, that is still going on.

My local library informed me, that they have changed politics about getting new releases or books in general. I was asking for the third book of a trilogy and since I couldn´t find it online or in the YA section there, I thought I ask one of the ladies who run the place. Despite having a nice little conversation with her, I heard to my astonishment, that, unless a teenager was asking for it or better two, they wouldn´t get it at all. It didn´t make sense to me at all. They have book one and two already in stock, so why not get the third as well?  She couldn´t even tell me if that was only a temporary rule or not. Good, their space is limited at the moment, but that is only until the new building is finished. And over the last three years, it was no problem at all for them to get new books, no matter if it was a new release or not. Well, let´s see what time will bring.

I am reading

2019 Library Love Challenge Mid-Year Update

I had to link up a review for a book from the library at Angel´s Guilty Pleasures when I stumbled across her mid-year post which reminded me that I should post one too. How time flies! My goal for this challenge was to achieve at least the Dewey Decimal. Meaning that I must lend and read twelve books from my library. But I guess that I will go beyond that since I´ve spent more time at the library lately than I thought I would this year.

To see how many books I´ve read for this challenge to date, keep reading *smile*

So far, I am six books away from reaching my goal. If life and my reading habits keep going the way they have during the first six months of the year, I will be able to reach my achieved goal and probably go beyond that. *fingers crossed*

The Books I´ve Read For This Challenge To Date

Challenge Levels
Dewey Decimal: Read 12 books
Thrifty Reader: Read 24 books
Overdrive Junkie: Read 36 books
Library Addict: Read 48 books

Waiting On Wednesday #101 – The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I am not sure why I actually want to read this book. During the past weeks, I´ve seen this new novel across some blogs who all presented it in their WoW and I guess I simply got curious. And it makes my fingers itch to find out if Renée Ahdieh´s rich and opulent writing style will show up in this one too.

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans is a safe haven after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent in the middle of the carnival season, Celine is quickly enraptured by the vibrant city, from its music to its fancy soirées and even its danger. She becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s enigmatic leader, Sébastien Saint Germain.
When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in Sébastien’s own lair–the second dead girl to turn up in recent weeks–Celine battles her attraction to Sébastien and suspicions about his guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.
After a third murder, New Orleans becomes gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose–one who has now set Celine in his sights. As the murderer stalks her, Celine finally takes matters into her own hands, only to find herself caught in the midst of an age-old feud between the darkest creatures of the night, where the price of forbidden love is her life.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

Happy reading & waiting on

Welcome

Vi
I am an avid reader, book blogger, and painter who loves to talk and write about books. A day without one in my hands is a wasted one. Skilled florist with a degree in writing - oh yes, that works! I like many genres, but horror is nothing for me. Here on Inkvotary I will show my love for books, things that move me and what´s going on off the blog - called life. The personal as well as life in general.
