The Heirloom Garden is a beautiful novel about loss, family, despair, the everlasting feeling of true love, loyalty, and hope. Combined with the passion for flowers of all kinds, this novel has captured my heart and emotions within no time. This is not my first Shipman book but one that had the most impact on me and which I consider the best I´ve ever read from the author. Viola Shipman is a class of its own when it comes to writing novels and with this novel the author shows that when you do something with your heart you can never be wrong.

Story
Abby and her family moved to a new place in Grand Haven. She hopes that the new house will bring her family, especially her husband - a soldier -, peace, and the healing they all need. Her work, the creation of new paint colors is important for Abby, but her colleagues and her boss are not taking her work or Abby as a person seriously. And when Abby starts to get to know Iris better and better and hears her story, she decides that both women need each other to heal and find a new way of living.
Style
This book shows you in the best way possible what life is all about. If you are not familiar with it, you will see the world through different eyes after reading this novel. And I mean that in good faith. Viola Shipman shows you through gardening that flowers and plants can bring people together and can give a shattered soul the healing that is necessary to move forward. Hope, dreams, and hurt feelings are things we call life. The author writes about them in a very gentle but honest way and lets you feel the pain and pleasure through his figures. It always impresses me how the author can create such strong characters and set them into a setting that is beyond being remarkable. I could literally see the garden Iris had around her house and the one, Abby and her husband were designing around theirs. Sometimes I thought I smelled the scent of the daylilies and roses and it was a huge pleasure to read all the flower names and those of some plants that Iris had in her garden.
The writing style is pure poetry and the combination of words a melody you can´t get enough of. Every word fits perfectly into the next and creates a tune you start to love from the first sentence to the last. And all that without being kitschy or too sweet if you know what I mean.
Characters
Family is above everything and the most powerful thing you can imagine. And something that can destroy you the second you lose it. Iris is the perfect example of such a loss. She had everything. A loving husband and a cute little daughter. When life took both from her, and she realized that men feel threatened by strong women who are willing to fight for what they believe in, she knows it is time for her to go her own way. It was great to read about the life Iris had long before she met Abby and to see how she had changed throughout the years. Her inner conflict and fight to meet the world outside her fence again were breathtaking and sometimes painful to watch. But the one scene, where nature seemed to make the choice for Iris was one of the best in the entire book. Simple but immensely powerful.
It is always great when you can see how an author not only has created his figures but also how they change through the ongoing plot. And in combination with the gardening and creating of a new garden a feast for the eye.
Conclusion
While reading the last few pages, I cried snot and water, the plot and the setting were so moving, loving, and beautiful. And that does not happen very often – I mean reading pages through a veil of tears. And even now, while writing this review, I can feel the emotions this book has brought up inside me. I was seldom so tear-filled and touched by a novel as I was while reading The Heirloom Garden. One of the best books I´ve read so far and for sure one that will stay with me for a very long time.

Es ist immer großartig, wenn man sehen kann, wie ein Autor nicht nur seine Figuren kreiert hat, sondern auch, wie sich diese durch die laufende Handlung verändern. Und in Kombination mit der Gartenarbeit und der Schaffung eines neuen Gartens eine Augenweide.

Dieses Buch zeigt im bestmöglichen Sinne, worum es im Leben geht. Wenn man nicht damit vertraut ist, wird man die Welt nach dem Lesen dieses Romans mit anderen Augen sehen. Und das meine ich ohne Hintergedanken. Viola Shipman zeigt einem durch Gartenarbeit, dass Blumen und Pflanzen Menschen zusammenbringen und einer zerschmetterten Seele, die Heilung geben können, die notwendig ist, um wieder vorwärtszukommen. Hoffnung, Träume und verletzte Gefühle sind Dinge, die wir Leben nennen. Der Autor schreibt sehr sanft und feinfühlig, aber ehrlich darüber und lässt uns den Schmerz und die Freunde durch seine Figuren spüren. Es beeindruckt mich immer wieder, wie der Autor so starke Charaktere erschaffen und sie in eine Umgebung versetzen kann, die bemerkenswert ist. Ich konnte buchstäblich den Garten sehen, den Iris um ihr Haus herum erschaffen hatte. Und den, den Abby und ihr Mann um ihr Haus herum entwarfen. Charaktere
Familie ist alles und das Mächtigste, was man sich vorstellen kann. Und etwas, das dich zerstören kann, sobald du es verlierst. Iris ist das perfekte Beispiel für einen solchen Verlust. Sie hatte alles. Einen liebevollen Ehemann und eine süße kleine Tochter. Als ihr das Leben beides nahm und sie erkannte, dass Männer sich von starken Frauen bedroht fühlen, die bereit sind, für das zu kämpfen, woran sie glauben, weiß sie, dass es Zeit für sie ist, ihren eigenen Weg zu gehen. Es war großartig über das Leben von Iris zu lesen, lange bevor sie Abby traf und zu sehen, wie sie sich im Laufe der Jahre verändert hatte. Ihr innerer Konflikt und ihr Kampf, die Welt außerhalb ihres Zauns wieder zu treffen, war atemberaubend und manchmal schmerzhaft anzusehen. Aber die eine Szene, in der die Natur die Wahl für Iris zu treffen schien, war eine der besten im gesamten Buch. Einfach aber immens mächtig.Es ist immer großartig, wenn man sehen kann, wie ein Autor nicht nur seine Figuren kreiert hat, sondern auch, wie sich diese durch die laufende Handlung verändern. Resultat
Ich habe auf den letzten Seiten Rotz und Wasser geheult, so bewegend, liebevoll und wunderschön war die Handlung und die Umgebung der Geschichte. Und das kommt nicht so oft vor – ich meine, Seiten durch einen Schleier aus Tränen zu lesen. Und selbst jetzt, während ich diese Rezension schreibe, kann ich die Emotionen spüren, die dieses Buch in mir hervorgerufen hat. Ich war selten so tränenreich und berührt von einem Roman wie beim Lesen von Im Garten deiner Sehnsucht. Eines der besten Bücher, die ich bisher gelesen habe und mit Sicherheit eines, das mir noch sehr lange in Erinnerung bleiben wird.
