Sophie Beckett never dreamed she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball - or that “Prince Charming” would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight. Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other - except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid’s garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy-tale love?
Story
As the ward of the Earl of Penwood, Sophie experienced several years of prosperity and sheltered home. But then the Earl remarries, and she is a thorn in the side of the new Countess. Since the earl refuses to comply with his new wife´s request, Sophie stays. But then the Earl dies completely unexpectedly, and hard times break for Sophie. One evening, with the help of the servants, Sophie turns into a true fairytale princess and goes to Lady Violet Bridgerton´s masked ball secretly and completely unrecognized. An evening that creates a memorable and unforgettable memory. But the magic of this evening with Benedict Bridgerton is just as magical as it is over quickly. Sophie returns to her old existence and life, while Benedict desperately searches for the mysterious stranger. It was only by chance that the two met again two years later under very unfortunate circumstances. Benedict takes Sophie under his protection, not realizing that she is the woman he has been looking for for so long. And which he now almost only considers a dream. However, this time, too, fate is not too kind to both, and Sophie´s principle never to become a man´s mistress doesn´t make things any easier. Not only does Benedict face the almost insoluble problem of their different position in society, but Sophie´s attitude towards her principles also seems to be an insurmountable obstacle.

Style
Julia Quinn's language and word style are unmistakable. The plot about the love of Sophie and Benedict is written in the style of a Cinderella story. Nevertheless, the story has its own independence and shine. The plot takes place around 1817 and offers the reader an impressive and soulful glimpse into life at that time.

The story begins with Sophie´s appearance at the Penwood house as a little girl and a little later makes a leap in time of two years. What happened to Sophie during this time or what she experienced there is largely up to the reader´s imagination. I liked it very much because the rest of the plot keeps the tension and the reader curious about how things will go on with Sophie and Benedict and how they will solve the challenges.

Characters
In her usual way, Julia Quinn gave the main characters a profound and at the same time very specific character in this Bridgerton volume and gave the female main character a very unusual self-confidence and a strong will to survive for the time. A circumstance that I really like and that can be easily understood today, even if the plot itself takes place in a completely different time. The fact that Benedict Bridgerton was literally blessed with blindness for a long time when it came to Sophie which made me shake my head with a smile while reading, seems to be a typical attitude among men. But now I don´t mean to imply anything in any way to a man, nor is it meant to be evil. But it really seems that men only see what they want to see or only see what they think they see. A challenge that Julia Quinn accepted with flying colors and which is presented in a very beautiful way in the figure of Benedict as well as the plot.

Conclusion
An extremely soulful and wonderfully written story. Humor, wit, passion, but also tragedy, and a trace of drama are combined in the third volume of the Bridgerton series in an extremely entertaining and sophisticated way. Highly recommended.

Happy reading
