This is the first time that I´ve read a book written by Lilian Kaliner. And to be honest, I am a bit disappointed. This novel is, at least for my taste, a bit too foreseeable. Yes, it contains some scenes that made me smile and yes, it is, in parts, very entertaining. But not enough to get a higher rating.

Story
Liz has moved to the family’s farm after the death of her husband. She wants her son to grow up there and to have at least his grandfather and uncles around him, after all the tragedy they have gone through. She takes care of the house, tidies up behind the men, cooks for them, and washes loads of laundry day after day. And at some point, Liz begins to wonder if that´s all life has in store for her. When Ethan arrives at the farm, Liz starts to get a glimpse of what could be if only the circumstances were different.
Style
The author´s writing style is gentle, dignified, easy to read, but unfortunately a tad too shallow for my taste. Well, there are a lot of conflicts that take place within the family as well as outside, and that is presented in a solid way by the author. But that alone is not enough to give the whole thing the necessary momentum and entertainment value. The plot is simple, albeit unfortunately predictable, and shows life on an Australian farm that I have struggled with many times. Not with the hard work that everyone is doing there, but with the image of women that is shown here. The main character accepts everything, does not defend herself, and was very submissive. Unfortunately. Well, it changed a lot for the better towards the end of the novel, but it was a long road until then, which often seemed very stretched to me.
The story ripples for almost three-quarters of the book and the monotony that arises is only broken by the few delicious scenes and dialogues with Liz´s son. Just the scene where he gets his hair cut. I had to laugh heartily, so amusing were the images that formed in my head.
Characters
The characters are full of problems, and, on the one hand, the author portrays the conflict within the family well. On the other hand, it is very elongated. But unfortunately, they are not that profound. In my opinion, great approaches were not used. The author gives the reader an insight into a typical male household where I shook my head more than once. With incomprehension and sometimes with laughter.
Liz is a young widow who has suffered many strokes of fate in her life. Since the death of her husband, she has lived with her young son on her father-in-law´s farm and takes care of practically everything related to the household. The men in the family don´t really see her, and neither does Liz see herself. The self-doubts that Liz has, her fears, and the fear of opening her mouth and taking a stand is seemingly impossible things for her.
To be honest, I often would have liked to grab her arm and ask what the hell she was doing. Her submissive behavior can hardly be seen, but unfortunately fits only too well into the plot of the story – even if everything is very lengthy.
Conclusion
To be honest, I am a little disappointed. For me, that was just a shallow average. I didn´t get in line with either the novel or the characters. No question about it, the story is nice to read, but also very predictable and therefore almost boring. I just missed that certain something. A lot of potential remained untapped. I can only hope that the author will change that in the following books and make more of the good approaches. There is still room for improvement. Despite all my criticism, I would still like to read the second volume. If only because I want to see what the author has come up with for the other characters.

Stil
Der Schreibstil der Autorin ist sanft, gediegen, gut zu lesen, aber für meinen Geschmack leider eine Spur zu seicht. Gut, es gibt jede Menge Konflikte, die sich innerhalb der Familie als auch außerhalb abspielen und die von der Autorin auf solide Art dargestellt sind. Das allein reicht aber nicht aus, um dem Ganzen den nötigen Schwung und Unterhaltungswert zu geben. Der Plot ist einfach, wenn auch leider vorhersehbar, und zeigt ein Leben auf einer australischen Farm, mit dem ich oftmals gehadert habe. Nicht mit der harten Arbeit, die alle dort erledigen, sondern mit dem Frauenbild, das hier gezeigt wird. Die Hauptfigur lässt sich alles bieten, wehrt sich nicht und war sehr devot. Leider. Gut, sie hat sich gegen Ende des Romans in der Hinsicht sehr zum positiven geändert, aber bis dahin war es ein langer Weg, der mir oft sehr gestreckt vorkam.
Die Geschichte plätschert fast über dreiviertel des Buches nur so dahin, und die so entstehende Eintönigkeit wird nur von den wenigen köstlichen Szenen und Dialogen mit dem Sohn von Liz durchbrochen. Allein die Szene, wo er seine Haare geschnitten bekommt. Da musste ich herzlich auflachen, so amüsant waren da die Bilder, die sich in meinem Kopf gebildet haben.
Charaktere
Die Figuren stecken voller Probleme und der Konflikt innerhalb der Familie wird von der Autorin einerseits gut dargestellt. Auf der anderen Seite doch sehr in die Länge gezogen. Doch so richtig tiefgründig sind sie leider nicht. Da wurden in meinen Augen großartige Ansätze nicht genutzt. Die Autorin gibt dem Leser einen Einblick in einen typischen Männerhaushalt, bei dem ich mehr als nur einmal den Kopf geschüttelt habe. Vor Unverständnis und teils vor Lachen.
Liz ist eine junge Witwe, die in ihrem Leben schon viele Schicksalsschläge hinnehmen musste. Seit dem Tod ihres Mannes lebt sie mit ihrem kleinen Sohn auf der Farm ihres Schwiegervaters und kümmert sich praktisch um alles rund um den Haushalt. Die Männer der Familie sehen sie gar nicht richtig und Liz sich selbst auch nicht. Die Selbstzweifel, die Liz hat, ihre Ängste und die Furcht, auch mal den Mund aufzumachen und Stellung zu beziehen, sind für sie scheinbar unmögliche Dinge.
Ehrlich gesagt, hätte ich sie oftmals gerne am Arm gepackt und gefragt, was zur Hölle sie da eigentlich gerade macht. Ihr untertäniges Verhalten ist kaum mit anzusehen, passt aber leider nur zu gut in den Handlungsverlauf der Geschichte, – auch wenn alles sehr langatmig angelegt ist.
Resultat
Um ehrlich zu sein, ich bin etwas enttäuscht. Das war für mich nur seichter Durchschnitt. Ich bin weder mit dem Roman noch den Figuren auf eine Linie gekommen. Keine Frage, die Geschichte ist nett zu lesen, aber auch sehr vorhersehbar und dadurch fast schon langweilig. Mir hat schlicht das gewisse Etwas gefehlt. Da blieb viel Potenzial ungenutzt. Ich kann nur hoffen, dass die Autorin das in den weiteren Büchern noch ändert und mehr aus den guten Ansätzen macht. Da ist auf jeden Fall noch Luft nach oben. Trotz all meiner Kritik möchte ich den zweiten Band dennoch lesen. Allein schon deshalb, weil ich sehen will, was die Autorin sich noch für die anderen Figuren ausgedacht hat.
