For a few years, I was a real Julia Quinn fan and couldn´t stop reading her Bridgerton series. The humor, the wit, and the so often hilarious scenes and dialogues make this series quite often a reading pleasure. This novel is one of those.

Delicately scented paper, a woman's curved handwriting: the pen friendship that developed between Eloise Bridgerton and Sir Phillip Crane means a lot to him. Ever since his wife died of a serious illness, he has longed for female company. Surprisingly, his secret wish comes true one night: a carriage pulls up and Phillip finds himself face to face with the writer of the enchanting letters: Eloise, a vivacious beauty, is ready to accept the advances he has made to her in his tender lines. But no sooner has he stolen her first kiss than Phillip receives another visitor: Eloise's four brothers angrily demand that he offer their sister marriage now that he has threatened her reputation...
Story
Eloise Bridgerton is stunned. She had somehow thought of spending her life as an iron maid with her dearest friend Penelope. But Penelope has married Eloise's brother Colin, and now Eloise realizes that she is not at all happy with her life as it is now. On the spur of the moment and without thinking too much about it, she secretly travels to Gloucestershire to see Sir Phillip, her pen pal for about a year, to see whether marriage to him is an option. But things don't turn out as planned. And so, shortly thereafter, Eloise finds herself walking down the aisle, making promises to Sir Phillip that she doesn't know will bring her what she so desperately desires: a loving husband and friend.

Style
Julia Quinn's writing and speaking style is a bit more subdued and very thoughtful this time. The plot is emotional and deliciously written, and while there's a lot going on, the novel isn't quite as bubbly and turbulent as the others. But this in no way detracts from the humor and charm that characterize this series. In this story, the soft tones are rather intoned and presented to the reader with wonderful wit and a pinch of charm in a sensitive but entertaining way, comfortably and yet fascinatingly.

Characters
It gets a bit chaotic and confusing at parts, but that's mostly about the character of Sir Phillip, not the reader's sensibilities. It was a real pleasure to watch and follow this character and everything that moves or unsettles him in terms of women and children, what all the misunderstandings and comedy result from. And yet it remains a character who has unimagined depths and has a whole lot more to offer the reader than it seems at first glance.

The Bridgertons appear rather seldom in the plot this time. But they are no less striking or different than in the other parts. These quick-witted dialogues and charmingly delicious scenes that the siblings share with each other - be it at breakfast in the morning or during a shooting competition together - are simply wonderful and Julia Quinn has once again managed to leave the individual characters as they are Readers already know them from the other parts of this series without getting bored.

Conclusion
Wonderfully emotional and delicious to read. The tone is a bit different this time, but you get a clue how the Bridgerton family is. For me, it was a wonderful read while enjoying some relaxing time.

Happy reading
