Weekly Book Wrap-Up #63 – It Feels Like Summer!

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #63

This week was in terms of books, a very quiet one. My book order arrived, and I got from Fischer (that is a German publisher) the offer to be a part of the promotion for Children Of Blood And Bone. Not sure if I will participate. I already own the US edition, and in the email, they didn´t explain how they wanna handle that promotion.

And my physical edition of The Ivy Years (The Year We Fell Down) by Sarina Bowen arrived. I was reading the manuscript during a reading challenge and now, as my reward, I got the softcover.

Sunday Post #20

Ha! My living room is quiet again and dark at night – the way it is supposed to be. We solved the annoying buzz the new recorder was making and now my living room is quiet again and dark at night. Woohoo.

On Friday I cleaned my balcony and the furniture. We are having summerlike weather for days and with almost 90° F I thought it is nice to sit outside while reading or writing and enjoy the sun. But then I discovered that my sunshade is broken and needs to be replaced. So, no sitting outside yet. It is way too hot with the bright sun shining down on it all day and without a bit shadow, you can´t stand it longer than five minutes. Well, at least my laundry gets dry very quick *smile*

I am reading

One Foot In The Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Sometimes I wonder if I would have read this series at all when I look at the original covers and compare them to those, the German editions have. Not that the English covers aren´t good looking, but to be honest, they aren´t really my taste. On the other hand, I would have missed some great books, if I would have gone after that. It was a fascinating read, to be honest, and one I don´t want to miss.

One Foot In The Grave*

Night Huntress Series #2

I hunt on behalf of the government Undead. I have not seen my ex-boyfriend Bones for a long time, after all, he is a vampire and therefore actually my prey. But now I need his help – Bones, however, has very own plans for me … (personal translation)
Story
Cat has embarked on a deal with the government. Then comes the day when her skills and knowledge are no longer sufficient, and she needs the help of another vampire. Bones. But how will the reunion be? And how will her supervisor react when he learns that the dead vampire down in the cooler is not Bones at all.

Style
The reader experiences a true firework of sparkling and quick-witted dialogues, an action-packed plot, and unbelievably enthralling scenes. The story is fast-paced and catches your interest from start to finish. With a lot of wit, charm, and delicious humor, Jeaniene Frost disjointed some clichés about vampires in a refreshing way. She hasn´t changed her writing style or her use of words and that way it is guaranteed that you will get easy access to the story as well as to the wonderfully created characters. The author´s language is blunt and a great mix of sarcasm, irony, and cynicism. Cat is a figure that has her very own way of dealing with things. Not matter if she is in a fight or dealing with authorities and rules.

Characters
Jeaniene Frost describes her characters with a mixture of their traits and their appearance in a short but entertaining way. Very different characters and personalities collide, and it is a real pleasure to experience their encounters and accompany them as a reader. Especially smashing is Annette. An English aristocrat from head to toe and a stunning vampire beauty. Between her and Cat it is dislike at first sight and the fight scene between the two is an absolute pleasure. In my opinion one of the best scenes in the book. What a woman – Cat, I mean.

Conclusion
Just awesome! A great continuation of a not ending reading pleasure. Well, of course, every book has an end sooner or later. No, what I mean is the reading pleasure itself. I could have read this forever. Thankfully there is the next book.

Happy reading

Ich Beobachte Dich by Chevy Stevens

I was waiting for Never Let You Go to come out in Germany for many months. And it was worth the wait. The cover was one of the first things I´ve noticed. It kind of got me right away and it fits so well. Oh boy … Right from the beginning, this thriller gives you an oppressive feeling. And the more pages I´ve read, the stronger it became. Chevy Stevens has a way to get you into her plot, to make you feel with the protagonist and to literally see everything right before your inner eye – phenomenal. And she for sure knows how to masterly manipulate not only her figures but her readers as well. So many times, I thought it must be that figure or that one. And was wrong.

Deep and cold is the ocean on the Canadian west coast, wide and rough the land. Here Lindsey lives with her 17-year-old daughter Sophie. Eleven years ago, she escaped a nightmare, living with her controlling, violent husband Andrew. He had to go to jail. Lindsey has blurred all traces and built a new life for herself and Sophie. But now Andrew is free … (personal translation)
Story
Lindsey is happy. Andrew promises her a bright and happy future, he helps her with her parents and everything she seems to desire, he gives her. But soon after the wedding, she starts to see a different face of him. He wants to control everything and gets violent when things don´t go the way he wants. Within no time, she is isolated from her friends, has no money of her own, no job, and a little girl to protect.

Style
The thriller starts with the past, showing you a frightened Lindsey and a very dangerous Andrew. From there the author switches back and forth between the past and the present life Lindsey is now living with her daughter. That way you get a pretty good impression on how life has shaped Lindsey, how she sees things now, that she does everything to protect not only herself but most of all her daughter. On the other hand, you can see, that Sophie isn´t the little girl anymore. She has needs, is curious about life and her father and her point of view are totally different from the one, her mother has, regarding her father. Which gives this thriller a very interesting and remarkable touch; a touch that lets you look closer, makes you sit up and take notice. Because you feel instinctive that something isn´t right. And with that, I am not talking about the fast-paced style. Nope. I am talking about the fact that at some point you want to take Lindsey and shake her to make her wake-up and get out of her passiveness. It was almost nerve-wracking to see her change, to see the moment when she started to realize what was happening and then the final moment when she knew it had to stop. All of it.

Characters
Chevy Stevens usually creates figures that go through hell and back. Strong women who have to endure something horrible, suffer endlessly before they can escape and who seem, to some extent, to be very naïve.

Lindsey and her daughter are very opposed characters. Sophie clearly misses her father, and it is not easy for her to cope with the fact, that her mother seems to only see the monstrous side of him. And that her mother still fears him, something Sophie never experienced, is another thing that leads to some misunderstandings between mother and daughter.
When I realized that Lindsey was a typical blonde, I started to smile. And when I read that Sophie expresses her feelings over her hair color and haircut (which are per se not bad things!) and in her drawings, I had a broad smile all over my face. Don´t get me wrong. I like to experience new hair colors myself. But it was a bit plain to have the slim and well-trained blonde divorcee as the main figure and the rebellious-looking daughter in comparison to the handsome but violent husband. Not complaining, just saying.

In the end, the author got me completely by surprise when it became clear who the evil person really was. It never occurred to me to ask the question about that one person that had changed everything.

Conclusion
Why does it take far less time to read a book than to write it? Within no time I had finished Never Let You Go and was left with an awkward feeling. I felt numb, wasn´t sure what to think of it, and had to deal with all kinds of emotions. The last few pages were explosive, action-filled, and breathtaking. A well-done book that deserves your attention. No matter if you are already a Chevy Stevens fan or on the way to becoming one.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #69 – Shades Of Wicked by Jeaniene Frost

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

As an old Jeaniene Frost fan, and while currently reading her Broken Destiny books, I simply have to have this upcoming new release. It sounds intriguing, fun and if it is in the same style as she wrote all her other novels, then this should be one pure reading pleasure as well. And the cover is a plus, too.

Author Jeaniene Frost
Night Rebel #1
Publishing Date October 30, 2018
Publisher Avon Books
Format Paperback

Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless … and every shade of wicked. He´s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian´s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he´s never been able to abide by the rules for long. Verita´s normal role is police, judge, and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait … well, all´s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian´s carefully cultivated, devil-may-care roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they´re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

The Sweetest Burn by Jeaniene Frost

For whatever reason, I wasn´t really interested in reading this second book, or the rest of this trilogy, for a long time. Don´t ask me why I can´t really explain it. As a huge fan of the author´s Night Huntress series, this one is slightly different and maybe I needed the right time to get into it again. A few weeks back, I thought, I´d give it another try and asked for the third book of this trilogy, the second was too old to require – and was VERY surprised when I got it. Which brought me in the situation, that I had to get this one first AND read it first of course before I can dig myself into the last one.

Conquering a supernatural realm turned out to be easier than getting over a broken heart. But her initial victory has made Ivy a target for revenge, forcing her to reunite with the dangerous – and dangerously sexy – Adrian. Ivy isn´t sure which will be harder: finding the hallowed weapon that will repair the crumbling walls between the demon and human realms, or resisting Adrian, who´s decided that come hell or high water, he will make Ivy his.
Story
Ivy is in the middle of a hunt for religious artifacts. Artifacts which are only controllable by her, the last descendant David´s. The only problem, she isn´t ready for the tremendous power they have. And with Adrian, who is desperate to prove to her that they belong together, things aren´t getting easier.

Style
A fast-paced and very entertaining novel, with quick-witted Dialogues, great figures, and a plot that combines the religious world with a reality that isn´t as God-fearing as humankind once has been. At least not in the way, that God was the one and only who could heal or bring peace or whatever it is that you connect with faith. In this book, you´ll find the right mixture of decency, demons, love, and the main figure who uses her brain to get the connections she needs to give everything some kind of sense.

Jeaniene Frost has a hand for dark plots with a hint of hope and the everlasting love. Ivy isn´t like Cat, though both show some commonalities. But both are willing to do what it takes to get the result they want or need. Well, sort of. The author has a great combination of quick-witted dialogues, dry humor, and some very cynical scenes that give you a reading pleasure of the special kind. But that end? Wasn´t that exactly what Adrian had tried to avoid all along?

Characters
While reading this second book I started to feel the same feelings for Ivy´s little sister Jasmine, that I had felt in the other book. That girl is, at least for my taste, way too hysterical, and way too partisan. She does everything to make her elder sister feel guilty. Sorry girl, that´s not how life works. That Ivy has a lot on her plate, and that she hasn´t chosen her role nor the part she has to play to save the world, shows Jeaniene Frost with wonderful words and scenes that show you both sides of the coin.

With her sarcasm-irony-cynical mix, Ivy is the opposite of Cat. Where Cat is the first-hit-then-ask-questions kind of girl, Ivy is more thoughtful and patient. Using her inner radar to get to the items she needs to find, she has to learn that she is dealing with a power that is far beyond everything she´d ever imagined.

Conclusion
Written in the typical Jeaniene Frost style, this novel is a wonderful continuation of the first book. Even with some time between reading them, I was back in the plot very quick, knew what Ivy was talking about, and could easily connect with everything again. And with that end, I am eager to read the next one, that´s for sure.

Happy reading

Verliebt Bis Über Beide Herzen by Sarah Morgan

New York, Actually is a novel that continues the wonderful style the author has. Some things are a bit changed though, but in a good way. In case you are wondering, why the title of this review sounds different, it is the title, the German edition has. And when I get a book from a German publisher for reviewing, I have to display the German data first.

All New York adores Molly as a counselor in love affairs. Only she never sticks to what she recommends to others. For what? She has already found her great love. He is loyal, athletic, and his dark eyes are of beguiling beauty: her Dalmatian dog Valentine. But when she meets cynical divorce lawyer Daniel in Central Park, he confuses her expertise quite a bit. Because Daniel has his own seductive views of love …(personal translation ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Molly loves her dog Valentine, walking through Central Park, and writing on her blog. What she doesn´t want, is to become known to the public. Her fans love her for what she does, but no one knows her face nor her real name. That starts to change when Daniel and his dog Brutus step into her life.

Style
The more I read, the more I felt spoken to by the plot and the story itself. Molly seemed to talk right to my heart and it was very comfortable to see that even she has to deal with some very heavy stuff. Sarah Morgan writes sensitively; her style is soft and combined with the perfect amount of humor and tension. I could literally see Molly running through the park with her dog or the way how her flat looked. Together with some wonderfully created figures, this novel is really one you can enjoy on a lazy afternoon.

What I loved about this novel, was the fact, that it reads like something that could easily happen to you. Like this is a story from real life. Though it is fictional. But you never get the feeling that it is too much. Every sentence is well designed, the atmosphere of the novel is great, and you won´t find a page where you get bored. At least that´s how I see it.

Characters
It was nice to see other figures from the other books of this series again in this book. Good, I am not very fond of Fliss (Felicity in the next book Holidays in the Hamptons). Her way to see things, to speak and act is not mine. But thankfully she wasn´t the main figure here, so no harm was done.

Molly is very careful whom to trust. During the ongoing story, it becomes more and more obvious, that Daniel is telling her far more from his sad childhood than she does from hers. Nonetheless, their talks contain some fun. There wasn´t one single moment in which I had wished that she´d be a bit different. Molly is one of those characters I call perfectly created.

Conclusion
A very entertaining plot, hilarious dialogues, there are some bitter experiences and two great dogs. All that is wrapped in a sensitive and very touching story that gives its readers a wonderful reading pleasure.

Happy reading

This week was a week full of wonderful surprises. I had from Fischer Sauerländer the book Iron Flowers-Die Rebellinnen (Orig. From the publisher cbj Deathline- Ewig Wir and received the new Chevy Stevens thriller Never Let You Go thanks to Lovelybooks and Fischer Scherz. Sunday Post #19

I am not happy at all with the new equipment that came into the house a little while ago. It is loud, you can´t turn it off, only standby, and the living room doesn´t need a nightlight anymore, because that new recorder is doing the job. Horrible! How in the world can a designer design something like that? That device is collecting dust faster than I can say the word clean!

I used to read in the living room, that isn´t possible anymore because that noise is driving me crazy. And I can´t use earplugs because if I do, I can´t hear the doorbell anymore or the phone. And besides, that recorder shouldn´t make that loud humming. The first time, I noticed it, I thought a bumblebee had gotten into the house by accident.

Nope, no bumblebee.

It is the new recorder that is making that annoying noise. Unfortunately, I have a very fantastic hearing. My family always says that I can literally hear the grass growing. So, I called the company, asked them if that´s normal. No, of course not, so I got a replacement. Same problem. And when I turn it off completely, which means I must unplug it, when it starts to make me mad or for the night and plug it in again after a few hours or the next day - that damn thing needs a restart! And to get that, I have to call the company and ask them to do it. Can you believe it?! I was flabbergasted when the very nice man at the customer service gave me that information. WTF?!

I am reading

Halfway To The Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Now, years after reading this book, I am thinking about why I wanted this novel in the first place. Was it the German cover edition (you can see it at the review end) or the summary, or both together? Can´t say for sure, but it was a pure reading pleasure, that´s for sure. Good, some parts of this book were a bit too much, at least that´s how I see it. But in the end, I was well entertained, and that´s what counts. Right?

There he was, the pact with the devil. The vampire looked at me seductively and threateningly at the same time. If I refused his offer, it would be happy-hour for him and I the drink. If I agreed, however, I would make an alliance with the absolute evil … (personal translation)
Story
Brought up in the knowledge that vampires are evil and that they carry evil, Cat has learned from an early age on, that she must never let that come to the fore. Being stronger than a normal person and equipped with the ability to see as well at night as she does during the day, Cat´s eye color also changes when agitated or upset. But the secret of her origin and what she is, she learns only when she turns sixteen, and from there she chases the evil as often as she can. Until she meets Bones. With him, her tricks do not work, and Cat suddenly sees herself in the role of the victim, which she does not like at all. Gritting her teeth, she embarks on a deal: they organize a duel. If she defeats Bones, she may poke a stake in his heart and win. If Bones wins, she goes to training with him and helps him in the hunt for a particularly bad vampire. And so, Cat starts a double life of a special kind. At night, she hunts vampires, during the day she goes to college and studies.

Style
Jeaniene Frost has a slightly weird sense of humor and you can tell that in every sentence and every word. The reader experiences everything immensely intense and the perky lip that Cat has on it, is an experience in itself. The linguistic style of the plot is in places really ironic, almost sarcastic, and the author understands it wonderful to lead verbal attacks. She sometimes uses words that would not have occurred to me in the dream. Individual and imaginative. But I also have some negative things. I wasn´t happy with the action draws in parts. The last forty pages I would not have needed, as beautiful and creative as they were written. But they were, for my taste, too much. Somehow too close to reality, in the literal sense. At least for a fantasy novel.

Characters
Jeaniene Frost created convincing figures, even if they seem almost overdone. Almost. Cat is amazingly naïve, a typical country girl, with ignorance of vampires and life in general. And a thoughtlessness that made me shake my head during reading. Talks without thinking first, kills first and then asks the questions and is so hotheaded, quick-tempered, and draws premature conclusions so quickly that sometimes I´ve really wondered where she left her intelligence, which she undoubtedly owns. The author has created a marvelous figure with Cat, who only learns in the course of the action what it truly means to be a half-vampire and how the world outside her home works. And I fell in love with her the moment she started speaking with the reader.

Conclusion
I didn´t like the plot in places and not everything in this novel convinced me. Nevertheless, Jeaniene Frost wrote with this novel an imaginative, witty, and wonderful oblique humor provided vampire story. There is hardly a bloodless side and yet the story is emotional and entertaining to read. This has compensated me again for so many vulnerabilities in the book. I´m looking forward to the next part.

Happy reading

Vi
I am an avid reader, book blogger, and painter who loves to talk and write about books. A day without one in my hands is a wasted one. Skilled florist with a degree in writing - oh yes, that works! I like many genres, but horror is nothing for me. Here on Inkvotary I will show my love for books, things that move me and what´s going on off the blog - called life. The personal as well as life in general.
