Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost

I still love the work by the author. This book here is one I read some time ago. And despite my little irritation about one scene, I am still thrilled about how the plot was developed. And that the reader is guessing until the end if Leila and Vlad will have another happy ending after their first happy ending. My advice, read the book and find out for yourself.

Story

Leila loves Vlad more than anything, but she is not willing to always dance to his will and be treated like an underage child. Since it also seems that she has lost her abilities and Vlad is becoming more and more distant from her, she sees no other way than to reject his offer to become a member of his clan and to end her relationship with him. A step that not only completely surprised Vlad but also forced him to rethink. When an unknown person is after Leila, the situation becomes critical, and Leila is forced to take a cruel step.

Style

Jeaniene Frost staged the second part of the mini-series about Leila and Vlad in the usual gentle tone. Which is also the fourth individual novel in the Night Huntress World series. The reader experiences a fast-paced story in which some things are blown up, a lot of blood is splattered and there is more than just one highly passionate scene.

After the wonderful happy ending of the previous volume, everyday life now creeps into the relationship between Leila and Vlad. An everyday life that Leila doesn't like at all, especially since it's been a while since she and Vlad shared the bed. The tensions that prevail between her and Vlad are skillfully written down by the author with a great deal of self-mockery, thus creating a real fascination for the reader.

Jeaniene Frost keeps the reader guessing for a long time as to whether she wants her two main characters to have another happy ending. The plot on the way there is varied, exciting, and written so quickly and fluently that you don't want to put the title down.

Characters

Jealousy, passion, hatred, and an extreme amount of anger and despair - the author spares her characters absolutely nothing. For a fantasy novel, the individual characters are surprisingly deep and compelling. There is even a brief reunion with Cat, which the author captures in a very amusing scene.

Leila struggles with the fact that she no longer has the ability to find out more about a person by touching objects. Since no one can tell her whether this is just a temporary state or a permanent one, she finds herself in an unbearable state of uncertainty. A feeling she doesn't like, as the gift makes her a valuable person to Vlad.

Another interesting character, who plays more of a supporting role in this novel, is Leila's sister Gretchen. The carelessness with which she accepts Vlad's money for her immense shopping addiction is not only limitless but also extremely embarrassing for Leila. But that doesn't bother Gretchen at all. She takes full advantage of Vlad's hospitality. Gives Leila a stand-up and more than once a resounding slap in the face for her behavior.

Conclusion

A gripping fantasy novel that scores with breathtaking scenes, quick-witted dialogues, and lots of blood. A must for all fans of Jeaniene Frost.

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

I am a fan of the author´s Cat & Bones series for years now. So, yes, I wanted to read the books of the Night Prince series as well. Unfortunately, the first book couldn´t entertain me as much as the original series was able to. No doubt, there is a lot of action, blood, and well-written scenes but somehow, I missed the irony and sarcastic humor, Cat always shows.

Story

Leila Dalton stands out. Not because she is a downright beauty. Her jagged scar makes her the number one star. And when the vampire Vlad takes a look at her it is clear: the course has just been set for their future. Unfortunately, his enemies still have a say in this, and so Leila has no choice but to finally deal with her scar and the consequences that come with it.

Style

Once Burned from the Night Prince series has been put into words dark, passionate, and very bloody. Although the author has lit a downright bloody fireworks display, the desired effect remains relatively modest. From the first-person perspective of protagonist Leila, the reader is drawn into an incredibly cruel, blood-soaked, and literally hot story. Very detailed and sharp sex scenes - which took my breath away many times - and quick-witted dialogues alternate skillfully and give the plot an unbelievable spice. The plot itself is simple: the protagonist is kidnapped because of her abilities and the real object of desire of the kidnappers’ rushes to her aid. Nothing exciting, but Jeaniene Frost turns this banal plot into a violent plot that glows with clichés in some places and very much lacks the charm and wit of the other volumes.

What absolutely thrilled me, however, is the emotional story between Leila and Vlad, which emerges from all the blood, violence, and destruction like a ray of pure light and gives the novel such a wonderful undertone.

Characters

Jeaniene Frost expects a lot from her characters in this novel. There is an overly protective instinct, an incredible will to run away from everything and everyone, and the weaker sex is almost trapped in a cage full of helpful spirits in the form of servants.

Leila likes to run away from everything and everyone, but she is a woman who has both feet on the ground and friendship and loyalty are paramount. On the one hand she is fearless, on the other hand she avoids any physical contact with her fellow human beings, as this always means for her a flood of images from the life of the person she touches. It does not occur to her that this could also be different. And so, meeting Vlad is a completely new experience for her.

Conclusion

A title that unfortunately does not go beyond the description of an average novel, even if it is bursting with action, bloody scenes, and hot passion. But in the end, the author literally leaves you hanging in the air with a big question mark. What else is she going to do with Leila?

One Grave At A Time by Jeaniene Frost

It can happen, that the one or the other book from a series is not what I had thought it would be. That the special something is missing. Compared to the other books in that series. Well, this one is one of those. Although it was entertaining and action-filled, I was missing the special something. The cherry that tops the icing on the cake if you like. Maybe the next will hit that mark again …

Story

A ghost makes life difficult for Cat and Bones. Unfortunately, not a harmless one, but one with a murderous past and present. Every year, on Halloween, he starts his brutal and pathological activity again and three innocent women have to lose their lives – and Cat doesn´t like that at all. But the hunt for the “witch murderer” turns out to be not so easy, especially since the newly appointed commander also throws stones in the way of her old unit. But the godmother Death is not punished with impunity and her anger quickly makes it clear whose side she is on. 

Style

Charming, funny, and very action-packed. The author gives a sly insight into the life of the spirits. The reader experiences the unusual and rather nerve-wracking life of the former godfather Death. If the other novels in this series were otherwise full of passion and fighting spirit, this volume is rather civil – despite some action-packed passages. There are few passionate scenes between Cat and Bones, but the reader learns an incredible amount about ghosts, the way a medium works, and which herbs and tinctures are effective against these invisible contemporaries. The style of writing and speaking is simple, direct, and again wonderfully unconventional. However, I couldn´t help feeling that something was missing here. The plot remained – despite several very action-packed scenes and lively dialogues – strangely dull. The book is, as contradictory as it may sound, absolutely entertaining, varied, and delicious in tone. And the reading pace is fluent and yet – the icing on the cake – that was missing this time. 

Characters

A lot of anger, destructive anger, and centuries-old hatred and feelings of revenge run like a red thread through the figures created by Jeaniene Frost – if only with some of them. There is a minor figure, the ghost of Elisabeth, who during her lifetime was tortured and abominably tortured and finally burned by an inquisitor and whose spirit she has been chasing for centuries. At some point, I asked myself: What does this ghost figure do if Cat and Bones actually succeed in catching and making this pathetic ghost inquisitor harmless? Will she then find a new occupation or content for her ghost existence? And to my unbelievable pleasure, Bones only a few pages later speak to Cat about exactly that topic and has a very interesting conversation with her about what he wants Cat to do, should they never be able to catch this spirit. The word “never” got a completely new meaning for me and the character of Bones reveals to the reader a hitherto completely unknown side of himself – what a positive surprise. 

Conclusion

The novel is entertaining and a pleasant pastime, even if it didn´t inspire me as much as the other volumes. Hence the weak rating. But the charm and wit of this series can also be felt here. Just read it yourself.

Waiting On Wednesday #138 – Wicked All Night by Jeaniene Frost

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

I love reading a book written by the author. Her Cat and Bones series was mostly one thrill for me. After that, I was not always happy with her books. But I hope that this one will be good again and make the vampire world fun and pleasure again.

Guess, one could say that I am a big fan of the author. It started with the beautiful to look at a cover, the German edition of book one had. Since then, the cover became even more beautiful. Not to mention the story inside *smile* To watch Cat and Bones act with each other and others are simply said fantastic. Yes, some creatures in this novel may seem a bit weird. But in the world of vampires, everything is possible, don´t ya think?

Style

Ready-to-use dialogues, varied scenes, and a fantastic plot make this novel an entertaining and action-packed reading pleasure that is immensely entertaining. I especially liked the scenes in which the master vampire Mencheres and Kira are in and the reader can literally hear her thoughts about this couple. That was pure fun, as a reader of the individual novels I know exactly why Mencheres and Kira behave this way and not otherwise, while Cat has no clue. 

Characters

Charming, straightforward, witty, very convincing, and confronted with one or the other challenge, the author has once again masterfully written very strong characters. I was particularly impressed by the big scene shortly before the end when the battle was raging. In general, the characters in this novel give nothing, but nothing at all. It is murdering, intriguing, abusing power, and crossing borders – all for fear of Cat and her abilities. Jeaniene Frost has succeeded in representing the conflicts that have arisen, both within the characters and in the vampire world itself. Just how Cat and Bones deal with the new situation is an adventure in itself.  

Conclusion

A powerful and highly explosive novel, which continues the story of Cat and Bones in an absolutely successful way. A varied and exciting reading pleasure is guaranteed here. Highly recommended.

Eternal Kiss Of Darkness by Jeaniene Frost

The vampire world the author has created is one you can´t forget once started. And the design of the German editions was what made me want to read her books. Over the years I dug deep into the world of Cat and her - more or less friends - and discovered a fascinating beauty when it comes to the Cat and Bones universe. I might not agree with some of the things that happen in this novel, but the writing style and language the author uses give you a wonderful reading pleasure. And to see Mencheres from a different side was well worth my time.

Story

The private investigator Kira unintentionally witnessed how a defenseless man is attacked and mortally wounded by a group of men. She does not know that the man is the master vampire Mencheres and the attacking group is ghouls. But Kira gets injured in the incident too, and Mencheres sees no other option than to kill the ghouls and take Kira with him – as the police are already on their way. That way, Kira comes in the unwanted enjoyment of Mencheres hospitality. And finds out that vampire actually does exist, and that she´s landed in the midst of the millennia-long feud of Mencheres and his uncle Radjedef. A feud that demands a high price from Kira and changes her life completely.

Style

Jeaniene Frost´s writing style is very direct. She names things by name, even if there is a character who not only expresses a great deal of choice but is also a bit old-fashioned. The plot is full of groovy dialogues and a fast-paced and absolutely compelling story. The author skillfully plays with the most different fears and strengths of individual characters. The reader experiences the exciting story of the private investigator and the master vampire and gets to know both the minds of Kira and Mencheres. And dives into a world full of emotions that connects the different worlds of man and vampire in a rather unusual way. In terms of action, this novel is to be classified directly after the first volume of the Night Huntress World novels (who would have thought) and before the fifth volume of the Night Huntress series. 

Characters

Passionate emotions of both positive and negative nature break through the different characters on different paths and seduce the reader with a huge spectacle of revenge, hatred, despair, love, and power. It was fascinating to see a master vampire being introduced to a new way of thinking by a human being, and thus completely changing life from the ground up. But the evil does not stop intriguing, which enhances the tension between the two main characters in a charming way. Jeaniene Frost is again able to convince with her characters and to present them profoundly and surprisingly versatile. And to mix the whole thing with a dash of reality – magnificent!

Conclusion

With her second single novel for the Night Huntress series, Jeaniene Frost has again achieved a true firework of passion, gloom, and exciting action. Strong characters, a captivating storyline, and an ingenious plot make this novel a true experience. Although the individual novels are self-contained actions, I recommend reading the titles sequentially, as the full magnificence of the story unfolds, and the reading experience is greatly enhanced.

Destined For An Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost

At first, I was a bit irritated. Some things in the ongoing story confused me and I couldn´t see where the novel was going. But the way how Cat was shown was amazing. One of the best books of this series, I´d say. In the end, it all made perfect sense and showed me, that the way how the story was written, was the only way to keep the door open for other books in this series.  Sometimes it pays off to present the reader with the unusual and some twists and turns.

As the battle begins between the vamp who haunts her nightmares and the one who holds her heart, only Cat can break Gregor´s hold over her. She´ll need all the power she can summon in order to bring down the baddest bloodsucker she´s ever faced … even if getting that power will result in an early grave.

Story

Cat and Bones are recovering from the exhausting fight, but for Cat, recovery is a double-edged thing. Instead of finding restful sleep at night, a nightmare is haunting her containing a faceless man who claims her as his wife and wants to bring her back to him. Catastrophic news for Bones when he learns about it. His co-regent Mencheres has news for Cat and Bones, which means the opposite. While Cat is still struggling with the incredible news, Bones is fighting for his wife.

Style

Funny to snappy dialogues, wonderfully fast-paced scenes, and highly dramatic moments make this book a wonderful fantasy experience. The tension is here additionally increased by short chapters and this almost to the unbearable. The finale culminates in an incredibly bloody fight that unfolds its effect in front of the reader´s eye with breathtaking speed, refinement, and brutal elegance. Jeaniene Frost leaves the reader a long time in the dark, whether by the intervention of Mencheres years before, the love of Bones was really desired or if an old master only wanted to ruin the game for fate. In a certain scene, the question of whether providence is always so good, was swirling around my head. 

Characters

In this volume, the reader gets an unfamiliar insight into Bones. The author allows the reader to see the views and actions of the vampire, as in none of the other books before. He fights with an unusual logic and attack tactics, which is sometimes opaque and only fully opens to the reader at the end. It was fascinating to see how a creature of the night fights for his wife, his property, and always works with style and elegance. The author has many a surprise for the reader. And some of them you see in her figures. Where in my eyes Cat herself holds the biggest surprise for the reader. She changes in a fabulous way shows a completely different side of herself without giving herself up. 

Conclusion

A really great book. The reader gets everything on offer here: passion, hate, jealousy, and lots of great fighting scenes combined with a breathtaking storyline. For fans of this series an absolute must.

At Grave´s End by Jeaniene Frost

One of the best books in this series. A thrilling read, written in a brilliant way and with figures that make you yearn for more. If you don´t know the author and this series yet, this is the best way to get started. This is one of the books I literally inhaled while reading. A thrilling plot, a haunting story, and two main figures who blow your mind. What a great novel.

Story

Cat has kept her job and is chasing and killing evil vampires on behalf of the government. She is the boss of a probably unique team and also married to the love of her life, vampire Bones. But her disguise as a decoy flies up and Cat herself is now the target itself. Now one of the most powerful and oldest vampire masters, Cleopatra´s daughter Patra has her sights on her and Patra is no joke. Between the two women, a fight of the special class flares up and Patra has to learn in a cruel way, what it means to get involved with a half-vampire.

Style

Jeaniene Frost has a slightly weird sense of humor that you notice in every sentence and every word. The darling lip of Cat is an experience in itself. The author´s style of speech is gloriously ironic, almost sarcastic, and the author is great at verbal attacks. In doing so, she sometimes uses words that probably cannot be found in any dictionary in the world. The vocabulary is individual, imaginative, and just wonderful. The plot itself is incredibly brutal, extremely bloody, and at the same time so erotic and passionate that it literally takes your breath away when you are reading it. The novel combines the elements of vampire, fantasy, and eroticism brilliantly.

Characters

Cat and Bones have evolved and made changes as well. Cat is stronger than ever. Not only physically, but also internally. Bones himself makes the biggest and strongest change. His powerful charisma is amplified by a special event many times over and his appearance changes due to an experience caused by Patra. The advancement and changes take nothing from the credibility of the individual figures. It will make them even better, more convincing, and look absolutely realistic. 

Conclusion

An incredible great book. More bloody, brutal, and passionate than its predecessors. This is a highly erotic, dark, and incredibly imaginative novel that captivates you with a great plot and a unique love story. Read!

Dämonenglut by Jeaniene Frost

Is this really over? A different Jeaniene Frost but as great as ever. The Brightest Embers was a well worthy end to this trilogy and prove that nothing is carved in stone. It took me some hours to get my head clear again, after finishing this book. The end was full of shocking moments and I wasn´t prepared for them at all. But then, can a Jeaniene Frost reader ever be prepared for what she presents in her novels?

Story

Ivy knows that if she wants to free all those humans trapped in the demon’s kingdom, she has to find and use the holy weapon. But is she really willing to give up her own life to free those, she doesn´t even know? And why is Adrian lying to her and keeping important information back? Is this his way of helping her? Or has he already betrayed her?

Style

The atmosphere is darker, and the main figure completely changed. Ivy is what we call a strong female character and she proves it on every page this book has. Thankfully, the irony, the cynicism, and the sarcasm are in this novel too. But the story itself is totally different from what I´ve expected. That her job is a matter of belief and faith, was clear to me, but that both were essential to fulfilling what Ivy was destined to do, which I thought was another story. Jeaniene Frost was able to keep her writing style. Many unanswered questions got an answer, and the novel brings some loose ends together. Once you´ve got started you can´t put it aside.

Characters

I was very happy, that Jasmine had only some short appearances. It was exhausting to see her reaction almost every time Ivy decided something Jasmine wasn´t happy with: she then turned into a hysterical screaming woman. The only good thing was, that the author made some positive changes in this novel regarding some of her figures. It was wonderful to follow Ivy´s new way of thinking, how she fought not only for herself but for others as well. And the one scene, where she tells Adrian how she really feels about him and their marriage – fantastic!

Conclusion

What an end! There is so much emotion between the pages, so many unspoken things you can see, and everything fits perfectly. And that end – holy smokes. The Broken Destiny trilogy is different from the author´s other series but absolutely worth your time.

One Foot In The Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Sometimes I wonder if I would have read this series at all when I look at the original covers and compare them to those, the German editions have. Not that the English covers aren´t good looking, but to be honest, they aren´t really my taste. On the other hand, I would have missed some great books, if I would have gone after that. It was a fascinating read, to be honest, and one I don´t want to miss.

Story

Cat has embarked on a deal with the government. Then comes the day when her skills and knowledge are no longer sufficient, and she needs the help of another vampire. Bones. But how will the reunion be? And how will her supervisor react when he learns that the dead vampire down in the cooler is not Bones at all.

Style

The reader experiences a true firework of sparkling and quick-witted dialogues, an action-packed plot, and unbelievably enthralling scenes. The story is fast-paced and catches your interest from start to finish. With a lot of wit, charm, and delicious humor, Jeaniene Frost disjointed some clichés about vampires in a refreshing way. She hasn´t changed her writing style or her use of words and that way it is guaranteed that you will get easy access to the story as well as to the wonderfully created characters. The author´s language is blunt and a great mix of sarcasm, irony, and cynicism. Cat is a figure that has her very own way of dealing with things. Not matter if she is in a fight or dealing with authorities and rules.

Characters

Jeaniene Frost describes her characters with a mixture of their traits and their appearance in a short but entertaining way. Very different characters and personalities collide, and it is a real pleasure to experience their encounters and accompany them as a reader. Especially smashing is Annette. An English aristocrat from head to toe and a stunning vampire beauty. Between her and Cat it is dislike at first sight and the fight scene between the two is an absolute pleasure. In my opinion one of the best scenes in the book. What a woman – Cat, I mean.

Conclusion

Just awesome! A great continuation of a not ending reading pleasure. Well, of course, every book has an end sooner or later. No, what I mean is the reading pleasure itself. I could have read this forever. Thankfully there is the next book.
