At Grave´s End by Jeaniene Frost

One of the best books in this series. A thrilling read, written in a brilliant way and with figures that make you yearn for more. If you don´t know the author and this series yet, this is the best way to get started. This is one of the books I literally inhaled while reading. A thrilling plot, a haunting story, and two main figures who blow your mind. What a great novel.

✶✶✶✶✶

Some things won´t stay buried – at grave´s end. It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield´s life. With her undead love Bones at her side, she´s successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat´s worn disguise after disguise keeps her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover´s finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger. As if that wasn´t enough, a woman from Bones´ past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cats about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she´s learned as a special agent won´t help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself – and Bones – from a fate worse than the grave.
Story
Cat has kept her job and is chasing and killing evil vampires on behalf of the government. She is the boss of a probably unique team and also married to the love of her life, vampire Bones. But her disguise as a decoy flies up and Cat herself is now the target itself. Now one of the most powerful and oldest vampire masters, Cleopatra´s daughter Patra has her sights on her and Patra is no joke. Between the two women, a fight of the special class flares up and Patra has to learn in a cruel way, what it means to get involved with a half-vampire.

Style
Jeaniene Frost has a slightly weird sense of humor that you notice in every sentence and every word. The darling lip of Cat is an experience in itself. The author´s style of speech is gloriously ironic, almost sarcastic, and the author is great at verbal attacks. In doing so, she sometimes uses words that probably cannot be found in any dictionary in the world. The vocabulary is individual, imaginative, and just wonderful. The plot itself is incredibly brutal, extremely bloody, and at the same time so erotic and passionate that it literally takes your breath away when you are reading it. The novel combines the elements of vampire, fantasy, and eroticism brilliantly.

Characters
Cat and Bones have evolved and made changes as well. Cat is stronger than ever. Not only physically, but also internally. Bones himself makes the biggest and strongest change. His powerful charisma is amplified by a special event many times over and his appearance changes due to an experience caused by Patra. The advancement and changes take nothing from the credibility of the individual figures. It will make them even better, more convincing, and look absolutely realistic.

Conclusion
An incredible great book. More bloody, brutal, and passionate than its predecessors. This is a highly erotic, dark, and incredibly imaginative novel that captivates you with a great plot and a unique love story. Read!

Happy reading

Top Ten Tuesday - Serie´s I´d Like To Finish Someday

This is my first Top Ten Tuesday I am doing here at Inkvotary. I´ve done a few of its German version a few years ago, but never the English variety of it. Top Ten Tuesday is hosted over at That Artsy Reader Girl and came back to my attention while reading a blog post at another book bloggers blog.
I am not sure if I can participate every week, but whenever there is a topic that catches my interest, I will write my share of it.

The question this time is all about Serie´s I´ve Given Up on / Don´t Plan to Finish or Serie´s I´d like to Finish Someday.
I chose the latter, since I have some books already at home but so far not the time to read them. That the series´ I´ve chosen are mostly Fantasy novels, is by accident, not purpose.

Serie`s I´d Like To Finish Someday

I´ve started Throne of Glass some years ago when it became available in Germany for the first time. I was hooked by the beautiful cover and the novel itself was a fantastic read. Celaena is one of a kind and a figure, I hadn´t seen before.

Two extra ToG books. One might become a series of its own.

Another Series I´d like to finish is A Court of Thorns and Roses. The first book I´ve started first by listening to the audiobook but quickly changed to the printed edition. I kept listening to it while running, though. The world of this series is different from the authors´ Throne Of Glass series and still, you can see that it is the style of Sarah J. Maas.

A novella to the series.

The Beautiful Series by Christina Lauren is one, I am crazy about. The first book, Beautiful Bastard is one, that had its impact on me. No matter how sexy, erotic, salacious, alluring, bold or animalistic the other men in this series were, for me, Bennett Ryan is simply the best. He is literally sex on two legs!

The German edition of Julie Kagawa´s Talon Saga is so gorgeous, I couldn´t resist when I saw the cover of the first book on the publisher´s website. The world, the author created with Dragons among humankind is something that attracted me right from the start. And one day, I hopefully am able to finish those books.

German editions of the Talon Saga

US edition of the Talon Saga

The Green Mountain Series by Marie Force is one I want to finish too. Though I am not sure if that is a good decision. That series started with some fantastically written novels, but then somehow the author changed something and the fun, wit, humor and hilarious dialogues weren´t the same anymore. But I am not giving up on this series. Guess, I am a hopeless case here.

Though I am not really sure if the last three books on this list are really from the original Green Mountain Series. But in Germany, they are published as that, at least including book 7, so I am listing them anyways. Sometimes books aren´t published in Germany in the right order or correct series. Got something to do with legal stuff.

Good, I guess that´s it for now. Not a Top Ten, but while I was writing this post, I noticed that I am not reading that many series I need to catch up or am dropping for good. Most of them I have on my shelves are done, with no further books coming out. And the few I have not read entirely, are shown above.

I would love to hear from you if you have read any of those series or books yourself or plan to. Until then …

Happy reading

Verliebt Bis In Die Fingerspitzen by Sarah Morgan

I actually wasn´t sure if I really wanted to read Holiday in the Hamptons, after the last book in this series hadn´t been that good. And the cover did ad to it. For me, it is too abstract. I like the ones the UK editions show a whole lot more. But tastes are different, and that is good. And besides, the novel between the book cover is, what matters, right? So, if you are looking for a romantic novel with a beach feeling, a beautiful landscape, and figures who know that life isn´t all flowers and sunshine, then this is your perfect read for the summer.

✶✶✶✶

Dog sitter Fliss learned something as a child: do not show anyone how vulnerable you are. Do not show your feelings to anyone. When she learns that her Ex Seth begins as a doctor in the local veterinary clinic, memories burn like the sun on her skin: the tender hours on the beach, the smell of the sea. Promptly she flees from New York to the Hamptons. But there she meets Seth, of all people. Confused, she slips into the role of her twin sister to avoid the painful encounter: the encounter with the biggest mistake of her life … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Fliss is completely confused. Her ex is working in Manhattan, her Manhattan, and she is overwhelmed by all the emotions that run through her. Way too much to deal with and so she does what she does best: she runs away. But if that isn´t enough, she is telling everybody, that she is her twin sister Harriet, and actually believes, that no one will notice. Her hope, to spend some peaceful weeks with her Grandmother, vanishes the moment she literally runs into her Ex again. This time her panic is even worse, and her personal nightmare starts all over again.

Style
Sarah Morgan´s language and writing style are easy to read and well written. There is fun between the pages, awkward moments, witty dialogues, and characters who sometimes drive you crazy, while others are a bit annoying. Set in the beautiful landscape of the Hamptons, the summer feeling is close, and you can literally smell the sea, hear the birds, and feel the grass. Yep, the author managed it very well to bring everything you think of when thinking of a perfect summer into the picture. There are some dark tones too, because of Fliss´ past, but it belongs to her and fits in perfectly. The only thing I couldn´t get an answer to was, why her father had been all her life so angry with his family. The things, that her Grandmother told her, were partly an answer, but not all of them.

Characters
There are moments in this novel, where I was not very happy with Fliss. Sure, she is a wonderful woman, knows how to deal with animals and the way she takes care of her Grandmother is absolutely beautiful. But the way how she acts sometimes was getting hard to take after a while. Fliss believes very strongly that she is a bad person, worthless and useless. And that she has, at all costs, to defend her twin sister whenever someone is only looking at her. That way, she keeps Harriet from living real life without even noticing it. Fliss looks for solutions whenever a client, her sister, brother, or her mother is in need of it, but when it comes to her own person, she isn´t dealing with her problems at all. She buries them deep down inside her, ignores them, and believes then, that they are solved. Which means, over the years, she´s become a woman closed like an oyster and not capable of dealing with anything personal. The worst thing about her: she can´t even open up to her twin sister because she doesn´t want Harriet to feel her pain or anything bad at all.

After a while, I started feeling pity for Fliss. It must be hard to live in a shell like that and not being able to trust your own family. Protecting what´s yours is good and well-meant, but when you do it because of the wrong reasons, it isn´t good at all.

Conclusion
This novel is emotional without being too dark and too heavy. There is still a light tone in it, and you are very well entertained. And still, I sometimes had the feeling, that this wasn´t new. Can´t quite name it, but I am not digging any deeper into it. Despite that, this is the perfect read for an afternoon at the beach. A summer read for all those, who like romance and some problems combined with it.

Happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #66 – It´s Raining Books!

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews / Reading Reality and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #66

I was a good girl and bought only two books. The rest of my new arrivals are all reviewer copies. So, thanks to Fischer Tor, Fischer KJB, Lübbe, and A Tree & A Valley for sending me the titles you can see below.

Sunday Post #23

The past few days I was in a book-related roller coaster. First, I got the information, that some of my email answers from early May had been received, but hadn´t been read by the one who´d send me the email at first and to which I was responding to.
Meaning for me: she hadn´t made the book reservations in the system, and now the entire press contingent is gone. Means for me: I am not getting them unless I buy them myself. I don´t have a problem buying the books I had shown my interest in my email answers. That´s not the point. But I do have a problem when someone tries to tell me bullshit for an answer. Tell me the truth, and we are good. But don´t make up a story as an excuse for something you screwed up because you didn´t do your job right.

A couple of days later, I wrote an email to the same person, asking for a book I had on my list for months. I was curious to see what´ll happen and thought, if no book arrives, I don´t mind and buy it myself.  You can imagine my joy when I unpacked all the packages and saw, that the requested one was among them!
