is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.
There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.
This week I present the German edition of Tahereh Mafi´s book A Very Large Expanse of Sea. If things keep going the way they do right now, this book has a very decent chance to be my first Tahereh Mafi read. And to be honest, I am not quite sure, why I want to read it. The cover, the German one, is not really mine. I would have preferred the original one. But ok, I can ignore that point. The blurb, on the other hand, sounds very interesting and it seems that the story is nowadays as actual as it was back in 2002. And after reading the blurb again while writing this post, I am curious enough to find out how the author has woven it into her novel. Let´s find out if this book can live up to my expectations. I am really eager to find out how this novel shows the diversity and thoughts we have about our neighbors.

It´s 2002, a year after 9/11. It´s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who´s tired of being stereotyped. Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She´s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments – even the physical violence – she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So she´s built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother. But then she meets Ocean James. He´s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her – they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds – and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she´s not sure she´ll ever be able to let it down.
