Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. But there´s also little else as thrilling – at least to Rowan Tripp. Being a Missoula smoke jumper is in Rowan´s blood: her father is a legend in the field. At this point, returning to the wilds of Montana for the season feels like coming home – even with reminders of the partner she lost last season still lingering in the air. One of the best of this year´s rookie crop, Gulliver Curry is walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a kid´s arcade. And thought Rowan, as a rule, doesn´t hook up with other smoke jumpers, Gull is convinced he can change her mind … But everything is thrown off balance when a dark presence lashes out against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year´s tragedy. Rowan knows she can´t complicate things with Gull – any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. But if she doesn´t find someone she can lean on when the heat gets intense, her life may go down in flames.
Story
Rowan, a passionate fire jumper, is looking forward to the new jumping season with mixed feelings. The tragic events of the last season are all too clearly remembered. Thankfully, she keeps the daily routine on the trot. The nights look a bit different. Nightmare torment her. The new season starts quietly, apart from the fact that one of the newcomers, Gulliver, shows his interest in her completely open. One day, Cooks cook Dolly, Jim´s girlfriend, reappears on the base and is extremely aggressive towards Rowan, accusing her of being the killer of Jim. A fact that Rowan can understand and accept as long as Dolly stays out of her way and they can work together professionally. But then Rowan´s quarters are devastated with blood, a corpse is found in the fire, and Rowan and Gulliver are shot. With calm, it is over and the search for the killer begins …

Style
Nora Roberts strikes a harder key in this thriller. Nevertheless, she remains at her usual level. Things are called by name and some passages go to the limit of obscenity, but it always fits. Everything is sensitively introduced to the reader. In the beginning, the action is a bit confusing but then unfolds a hot, action-packed, passionate, and with hatred, courage, and despair history, which ends before the eye of the reader in a fascinating and fiery finale finally. By changing the scene with a new chapter that is sometimes shorter or longer, the author creates a build-up of tension, which builds up more and more until the end of the book.

Characters
With incredible liveliness, Nora Roberts has written down her characters in this novel. The author has brilliantly combined passionate emotions, opposing character traits, and human abysses to form a harmonic unit that adds an extra kick to the thrilling storyline. There are unimagined abilities in some of the characters and it was absolutely fascinating to follow them in their development. It was not easy to spot the villain without anticipating the end of the thriller. Nothing is as it seems, and the author comes up with some surprise.

Rowan is a fire-jumper with body and soul and is in no way inferior to her father, a legendary fire-jumper. She knows what she wants when she wants it and how she wants it. There are no excuses for her. She loves fire but also has the necessary respect for nature or in front of nature in general – something that makes her a specialist in her field like no other. As passionate and conscientious as she does her job and controls the equipment every day, she loves passionately at night. Rowan is not at all happy that the new guy, Gulliver, creates exactly these feelings in her because she does not tolerate any distraction from her rather dangerous job.

Although Rowan´s father is only a secondary character, his performances have weight, rounding off Rowan´s behavior, thinking, and being.

Conclusion
Hot, just hot! A fascinating vibrant and incredibly entertaining thriller that I´ve devoured almost overnight. A brilliant entertainment I highly recommend.

Happy reading
