Happy Halloween

Despite the fact, that Halloween has become a “thing” here in Germany, I am not much of a Trick or Treat kinda girl. Most of the things I see at our supermarket are nice to look at, but I don´t feel the need to buy all the candy – no matter how crazy and bloody it looks. Halloween is a day like any other day for me. But I have only great memories of my Halloween time in the US – imagine me elbow deep cutting out pumpkins …

Back then, it was quite something to stand on that porch in the bright sunlight cutting some pumpkins. It was fun and a completely new experience for me. Here in Germany, it feels different. Maybe it is because we celebrate a few months later carnival and that is for me the same as Halloween. But for the kids here, it can be quite fun. Though our doorbell is quiet and there is no "trick or treat" to hear. Maybe that is because I don´t decorate my door for Halloween. We did it while I was living in the US. But here, it just doesn´t feel the same to do it too. Is that weird? Not sure, but for all those, who celebrate Halloween, I hope you will have fun and get loads of candy.

Till next time & Happy Halloween

Waiting On Wednesday #114 – Heaven´s End-Wen Das Herz Verflucht by Kim Kestner

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

I LOVED reading the first book and with the end it had, I am of course curious and eager to find out how the story will continue. There were so many things in the plot I can´t imagine how the author Kim Kestner will be able to top them, but I am certain she has found a way to do it. The mixture of ghosts, humor and the main figure Jojo - who is a teenager with a fine irony in her thinking and the way she speaks – is something you don´t find everywhere.

Simon Thorn And The Eagle´s Lair by Aimée Carter

The final part of this great series. In my eyes the perfect end. Emotional, diverse, fast-paced and with great dialogues and scenes. I had a wonderful time reading it. And the mixture of evil and the good ones was well thought through and shown in an absolute atmospheric way. My heart literally jumped while reading the fantastic showdown between two figures and I had to hold on for a few seconds after that one shocking moment! Aimée Carter, how dare you! *smile*

✶✶✶✶✶

“Now there is no turning back. Tonight, the fight for the Gryphon would be decided once and for all. Simon would save his brother – or die trying.”
Simon is desperate – the power-hungry wolf Celeste has pulled his brother Nolan on her side. He has even handed over the three parts of the griffin rod that Simon and his friends have captured! Simon absolutely has to prevent Celeste from getting the last two parts of the crystal. Because then she will kill Nolan to get his animal-trainer skills. Simon is convinced of that. He travels to the bird kingdom in search of the deadly weapon. But not only does he endanger his own life … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Simon has no other choice but to make a deal with his evil grandfather Orion. He knows that what they agree on is not worth the air it was spoken in, but what else can he do to find the last piece that will help him destroy the terrible weapon the entire Animalgam world fears once and for all?

Style
The gorgeous town in the trees reminded me a bit of one of the star wars movies. And thanks to the beautiful writing-style the author has, I could literally see everything right before my inner eye. The pictures were amazing. The fact, that Simon´s grandfather showed his true face and seemed to be always one step ahead of him and his friends, was annoying. I never knew what to think of Orion. During some scenes, he seemed so nice and kind while in others he showed a cruel and evil face. Aimée Carter has kept her style. The way how she describes all the scenes, the breathtaking landscape and the story itself was one great reading pleasure. The palace way up in the trees, filled with things you would never imagine being there and how Simon discovers not only the new place he is supposed to live in but also how his people think about him and his family, that was one adventure inside the main adventure.

And the fact, that the story is filled with unexpected twists and turns and shows how some figures have changed was an additional plus to the already great written novel.

Characters
I am a huge fan of Simon. This boy is one heck of a great boy. The way how he sees the world, how he feels about everything is just wow. His sympathy for others, his friends especially, and that he simply can´t look away or even step away when another one is in need of help is absolutely thrilling. Good, he loses a lot while fighting his grandfather and it broke my heart that one of the most wonderful characters of this series had to die, but on the other hand, it made sense. If the loss of a beloved friend or figure can make sense ever.

The author has again brought some very diverse figures together. The evil in Orion, the strong will in some other kids to change their world and the strength they all show is amazing. And very impressive. It fits together so perfectly and gives the story itself a wonderful warmth and power.

Conclusion
It was clear from the beginning of this series, where the last book would end. But to read it, to see how things had to develop to get there and how Simon and his friends had to suffer and fight to survive and win this “war” was one incredible ride. I enjoyed each of the books very much and with this last one I am actually sad that there isn´t more of this series to come. Sure, the story is told with this last book in the perfect way and any addition would be one too much, but still. The feeling is there …

Happy reading

Vier Zauberhafte Schwestern Und Ein Wundersames Fest by Sheridan Winn

The Sprite Sisters is a series for all ages. I love the magic and the way how children and adults act together. This book is an anniversary edition and tells the story of Christmas and how problems can be handled with the love and support of a caring family. The setting is set before the actual series begins and after the books where the author tells her readers how it all began.

✶✶✶✶✶

Four sisters celebrate magical Christmas. On Cantrip Towers, the big Christmas is coming up. Flame, Flora, Marina, and Sky decorate the house with branches from the garden. But in one has hidden a small green goblin. And while everything is decorated festively, the Christmas visit arrives and smells it in the corridors for treats, the goblin sets up a lot of pre-Christmas chaos. Can the sisters stop the naughty gnome? (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary).
Story
The four sisters are looking forward to celebrating Christmas with their family and loved ones. But something is odd. No matter where they look, the red berries from the holly seem to disappear. Some cake is missing and everywhere are crumbs. Something invisible is in the house, Flora can feel it.

Style
The soft, sensitive style of Sheridan Winn, mixed with great humor, some hilarious scenes and even more hilarious dialogues make this novel another great read for her fans. The magic some of the Cantrip sisters already have has to be kept a secret. And with that, some things need to stay hidden and can´t be done in the open. The way how the author lets her figures deal with everything is not only great to read but also shows that love and trust in yourself and others can move mountains.

This book is set before the actual series and it is quite remarkable that the author has not changed her style. Cantrip Towers is as magical as ever, the winter setting beautiful and I could literally smell all the delicious meals they were preparing in the kitchen as well as the warm atmosphere Cantrip Towers has. Sure, it is only a story, but brought to you as if it was for real. Mmmmmh I wish I could have some of the recipes Ottalie the mother of the sisters, was cooking or baking. Some of them made my mouth water while reading through the scenes.

And I was laughing tears when I read the play Flame had organized. That was one piece of art! I want more *smile*

Characters
The Sprite Sisters are again portrayed in a warm, sensitive and wonderful way. Sky, the youngest is smart as hell and has her very own way of giving her elder sisters and parents a hard time. Because Sky seems to appear out of nowhere most of the time and that way, she gets to hear a lot of things she isn´t supposed to hear or see at all. And with magic in the family, that is not always good.

I loved in this book, how Sky is solving things, how she sees the world and that there is nothing, she won´t discover sooner or later. And when I remember how she started to discover her own magic, in the other books of the series, with this story it all became complete.

Conclusion
I am so HAPPY that the author has written another book about The Sprite Sisters. In fact, I was very sad when the actual series was done with its tenth volume. And this anniversary edition is just perfect for the upcoming Christmas season. If you are a Sheridan Winn fan or love reading this series, you should definitely go and get it. For me, it was a must-have and must-read. Hopefully, there will be another book of this series sometime soon. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #88 – Summertime Ends

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it.  And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #88

As you all know, I usually only display here books I either bought or received as a review copy. Well, this week I will show the books I´ve borrowed from the library. Kind of tired writing every week that I “didn´t buy any books” *smile*

Sunday Post #45

You can tell that we are literally running towards the end of the year in huge steps. Our main street is one building site. Which means that all the traffic is going through the street where I live. Day and night. Cars, trucks, Tractors – no matter what kind of vehicle: it drives through our street. It is LOUD.

The other thing I had to deal with, was as unpleasant as the traffic noise is. The company that provides me with the Internet, TV, and landline, tried to trick me. I´ve got it all sorted out, but I am still angry with myself for not seeing it sooner. It could have saved me some time and nerves.

Let´s hope that at least the reset of the clock by one hour works better. I need some extra sleep.

I just got off the phone with my mom. After a week with no net, my cell showed me all kinds of messages and one of them was from my mom. She obviously had tried to call me but hasn´t left any message. And with the knowledge about my father´s dementia, I called her this morning as soon as I saw the info. Turns out, she´s been busy saving all the numbers she´s having in her old, broken phone into her new one, and while doing that she must have hit the dial button and that call went straight to my mailbox. I was kind of relieved that my dad was ok. And she too. We talked for almost an hour before my father came out of their bedroom. She told him to stay and that she was on the phone with me and therefore the breakfast table wasn´t ready, because it seems that he has developed the habit to go back to bed when he sees no coffee mugs and plates on the table. We laughed about it and then she told me, that he had hurt himself about three days ago while turning their matrasses from summer side to winter side. Now, his right arm looks like someone has beaten him up – all blue, purple, and every color in between. Only because he thought he could turn the damn thing all by himself. The doctor had told him that one of his cords snapped during the sudden move and the muscles in his arm got hurt too when the now detached cord had hit them. Oh boy! The only good thing about it all is, that my father hasn´t lost his humor. He can still laugh about himself, and as long as he is pain-free, which he obviously is, and doesn´t need any pain killers, things seem to be fine.

Now, the sun is shining, and I am hopefully able to go and read a bit. I have only nine books left to read for this challenge, before the year is over, to achieve my goal of 30 read NR titles. Though I am not sure what to read first or better said next. I feel under some sort of pressure lately with the end of the year coming closer and all the new releases I still want to read before the 31st December. I would love to achieve that goal, but that seems utopic considering the reading speed I have since January. Well, well...

How was your week?

Happy reading

A Court Of Frost And Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

A beautiful story about Feyre and her life after a bloody and cruel war. But in this book, she has to face a different kind of war. Her sister Nesta is giving her a very hard time, and I am still wondering why that is. Is Nesta envious about the life and love her younger sister is having? About her ability to cope with what life has given her? That Feyre was and still is able to change things, to look ahead? Many questions I have in my mind and hopefully, some of them, or all, will be answered in the next part of this gorgeous series.

The Winter Solstice. In a week. I was still new enough to being High Lady that I had no idea what my formal role was to be. If we´d have a High Priestess do some odious ceremony, as Ianthe had done the year before – A year. Gods, nearly a year since Rhys had called in his bargain, desperate to get me away from the poison of the Spring Court, to save me from my despair. Had he been only a minute later, the Mother knew what would have happened. Where I´d now be. Snow swirled and eddied in the garden, catching in the brown fibers of the burlap covering the shrubs. My mate – who had worked so hard and so selflessly, all without hope that I would ever be with him. We had both fought for that love, bled for it. Rhys had died for it.
Story
Feyre is living an almost happy life. The war is over, Rhys and her family are alive and well and she can do all the things she needs to do to get accustomed to her new role as High Lady. And her life could be perfect if there wouldn´t be Nesta. Her elder sister is still struggling with her new abilities and the fact, that she is no human anymore. And the way how she shows her rage is only hard to bear for Feyre. Until one day, she´s had enough and decides for her how things will continue. A decision Nesta is shocked to hear.

Style
It was one wonderful journey to watch how Feyre and the others were enjoying life in peace. Or at least, the way they were able to live after all the blood and cruel things they had to endure. The snow, the cold winter, the way how Feyre literally started to bloom, it was great to see. But on the other hand, I could have smacked Nesta against a wall. What in God´s name is her problem? What has she seen while she was forced to step into that cauldron and got changed from human to Fae? I have so many questions about her in my head and do hope that the author is answering them in the next book.

Characters
It seems that Feyre is becoming more and more a great High Lady. She is still the same woman, meaning that she has kept her principles, that she is willing to do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones and keep them safe. And she is still trying to include Nesta into her new life and family. There were many scenes where I was wondering how she can just watch and let Nesta live the way Nesta wants to live. And I admired Feyre for her behavior towards her eldest sister. Not sure if I would have been able to keep a calm mind.

Conclusion
I am glad that I finally got to read this book. It was like a relief with no war, or at least not the kind of war we had to watch in the previous book. This one is a white, winter tale with peace and a happy life. As peaceful and happy as possible, considering Nesta and her rage she is carrying deep inside her. If you are a fan of this series, this book is kind of a must-read for you.

Happy reading

OXEN Gefrorene Flammen by Jens Henrik Jensen

This was one thrilling ride from the first word to the last. I love the way how the author has brought it all to a logical and very convincing end. In this thriller, you will find a psychological finesse and brilliance that gives you the chill. A fantastic end to the Danehof trilogy and absolutely worth your time.

OXEN Gefrorene Flammen
by Jens Henrik Jensen
Danehof Trilogy #3
Original Title De Frosne Flammer
Publisher dtv Premium on August 31, 2018
Genre Thriller
Pages 589
Format Softcover

Goodreads
✶✶✶✶✶

To escape his pursuers, Niels Oxen flees to the Swedish archipelago. A doctor picks him up and takes care of his wounds. She even gives the former elite soldier the opportunity to find work and a new home far away to the north, secluded from civilization. But the thoughts of his son Magnus and the fact that the Danehof continues to weave his evil machinations do not let Oxen go. And so, he sets out on a merciless revenge vendetta against the killer of the secret society and penetrates to its innermost center of power. Because he wants to have his old life back. At all costs.
Story
Oxen is back among the living. His nightmares don´t come that often anymore and he is ready to do whatever it takes to get his life back. The thought that he could possibly never see his son Magnus again, is no option for him. But the Danehof people are merciless and so he has no other choice but to fight them from within their own organization.

Style
With brilliantly polished sentences and explosive scenes, the author here knows how to convince the enthusiastic reader. The end is a bit of a surprise but seems logic. Jens Henrik Jensen again gives the reader a very diversified and action-filled story where a lot of blood is shown, and bullets are flying around. And with the main figure at its best. Niels Oxen does what he does best. Fighting against a merciless and very powerful enemy but this time he knows who they are.

Characters
Great created characters, even though Mossman still is the ice-cold tactician and plays the others whenever he can. The author shows how in a convincingly blunt but sensitive way how Oxen and his fellow fighters have to struggle with the power the Danehof once again showed. Nothing is as it was before, for none. And yet Oxen isn´t willing to play after the rules the Danehof people are trying to dictate. The way how he starts the fight them again, how he uses his ability and skills to get not only his life back but also some sort of freedom from his past, is remarkable. And keeps you on the edge of your seat while reading.

Conclusion
Absolutely brilliant. Worth every minute of your time. Yes, some things are very familiar in this thriller, but put into the right place and only there to bring the plot further into the right direction. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #113 – Kingdom Of Shadow And Light by Karen Marie Moning

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I read the first five books of this series that were published by a German publisher. Not knowing, that the author would come up with other books in this series a few years after the last one, Shadowfever. At first, her German fans, including me, thought that it would be only a matter of probably one or two years until we could read the German edition of Iced. Well, the publisher decided that the “new direction” the story had taken with Dani O`Malley would not fit into their program, and therefore they no longer bought the rights for the German market. Sad, but it seems, that Dani and her story were too childish. Not sure, if that is the exact way to describe Dani in Iced, but apparently, she was the reason for the cut. I can´t remember the year this happened, but since that time I either have to read the English Originals (which is no problem at all for me) as HC - which are pretty expensive - or wait until the books are available as a paperback. But I don´t like it at all, when I am literally forced to have two forms of print at home, instead of one.

The story about MacKayla Lane was one, I was fascinated by from the very first page. The mix of darkness and light, sarcasm, irony, and dark humor between Mac and Barron´s – all that got me right from the start. For me, the author has a very special way of bringing her readers into a world that is a perfect mix of mythology and erotic danger combined with a great setting.

And yes, despite the fact, that I have not read the books after I finished number five, I think I will go and finish this series - someday. So, yes, I am waiting for this one to come out.

The Backlist Reader Challenge 2019 - Goal Achieved

This reading challenge was/is focused on knocking off titles that have been on the TBR for a while, or even ones that got pushed aside for new releases and is hosted by The Bookwyrm´s Hoard. It seems that I did pretty well with this challenge. My Goal was, to read at least 8 books from my TBR and what can I say?

I DID IT.

It wasn´t as easy as I thought it would be which is pretty amazing for an avid reader like me. But this year so many things have changed apparently. And one of those things was, and still is, my reading pace. And to be honest, it was the Fraterfest Readathon in October that helped me to achieve my goal, because the title I´ve read for that readathon was one from my TBR.

Despite me being done with the challenge, the Backlist Reader is still going on. Meaning for me, that any TBR book I am able to read until the year´s end, is a plus. To be honest, I doubt that considering the new release pile on my desk, waiting for me. But you should never say no, right?

Simon Thorn And The Black Widow´s Web by Aimée Carter

While reading this story about Simon and his adventures in the spider kingdom I always had to think about Ron Weasley and his fear of those creatures. I had similar feelings every time I looked at the cover and my imagination was running wild. Arachnids aren´t mine either. It was no fun to see the spider on the cover of the German edition every time I picked it up to read a few more pages. But on the other hand, it fits. The story IS all about spiders and other insects and though it is not the best thing I´ve seen in my head, some scenes were really hilarious to read.

“It takes a lot of courage to do what you plan to do”, Leo said, jumping onto the swing next to Simon. “But the things that are really important are usually the hardest. I believe in you. You are more capable than you think!”
Simon needs three more pieces of the deadly grip rod to assemble the powerful weapon and destroy it forever. His dangerous mission takes him to the land of insects and Arachnids, where rebels claim the throne of the Black Widow Queen and threaten his girlfriend Ariana. Simon can turn into all manner of spiders and insects, but it´s swarming with spies and traitors everywhere! How is he going to be able to protect his friends, find the third part, preserve the peace of the Empire and at the same time keep his special ability secretive? Simon has to decide who he wants to trust … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
With Ariana not being herself lately, Simon and his other friends are having a hard time to get what they are looking for. Something is utterly wrong in the Empire of the Black widow Queen. Within no time Simon finds himself and his entire family in a war with ants and their majesty who has plans others want to claim as their own.

Style
It was weird to see Simon as a spider. Sure, the author has written this story, too, in a very joyful manner and with great sensitivity. There is nothing you can´t see or read. But for kids who don´t like those kinds of animals, it could be a bit hard sometimes, to keep reading. Despite that, the story was very entertaining and showed again, that family is not always what it seems to be at first sight. And with Noah and his very own plans, you never know what´s around the next corner. Yes, this novel contains many unexpected twists and turns.

Characters
It comes more and more through, that not every figure in this novel or series, is what they seemed to be. Noah is one of them. He does something, Simon barely understands and shows that the is, although they are identical twins, not at all the same. Noah acts and thinks completely different from how Simon acts and thinks.

Sure, they look identical, but other than that? Not much the same. Both try to free their mother, but both use very different ways to achieve that. And while Simon does everything to keep his friends and family safe, Noah actually does not care. He is blind, arrogant and totally focused on himself and his mother.

Conclusion
Yep, this one was a wonderful read too. But with a different tone. Maybe because of the fact, that spiders were everywhere, I couldn´t turn my head off the way I could while reading the other books of this series. Nevertheless, I had my pleasure with it.

Happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #87 – Too Mild For The Season

Stacking The Shelves #87

During the week I received some book mail. Both came from Fischer KJB and I am very happy about them. Thank you, Fischer, for sending them. One I already read, the other is one of my current reads. Need something light at the moment.

Sunday Post #44

The past week I was thinking about a lot of things. Nothing makes me really happy or satisfied. Either I am in a general awkward mood or I need to make some really big changes in my life. We had some very rainy days with too mild temperatures for the season and maybe that was the reason why I was in such a weird mood. But I am glad that I was able to read a bit.

I decided to sign-up for the HoHoHo Readathon in November and finished the Fraterfest Readathon with one finished book and the win of a gift card. I was completely surprised to be picked as a winner and very curious now if I can get what I have in mind.

And I achieved my goal for the Backlist Reader Challenge. The book I read for the Fraterfest was one from my TBR and with that, I could finish the challenge.

How was your week?
