Do you know the movie “The Truman Show”? Well, this book shows the same story, only with a girl, in a Hawaiian-like setting and not half as good as the movie. It is sad to say it but this time the author disappointed me.

Story
Ray is a reality TV star. Without knowing it. Her life at Aroha Island is very harmonic. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happens. But things change the night her Uncle Jim´s Diner burns almost to the ground and she has to spend some nights at her best friends’ place. And when the stranger Liam appears Ray senses that nothing will be the same anymore.
Style
No question about it, Britta Sabbag´s writing style is as wonderful as ever. Her words are well placed, and while some of her sentences are a bit bumpy, most of them are smooth as silk. You can see the beautiful island of Aroha right in front of your inner eye. It was like walking through paradise reading the story. Except for the fact, that the story isn´t new. If you´re familiar with the movie The Truman Show, you will know what I mean.
After a few chapters, I wondered why the author thought she had to write a book about a reality show. The plot isn´t new and to be honest, Mr. X, the producer, and Ray aren´t half as good as the film´s original characters, Christof, and Truman Burbank. Ray is a teenager and doesn´t live her life the way the show´s producer would like it to be. First of all, Ray is a happy, somewhat naïve girl who loves her life and the people she calls her family. The author shows in a sensitive way that Ray´s life is very predictable. That her main character is satisfied with the boring normality she experiences every day. And somehow it looks perfect to the reader. Maybe too perfect. Because after about halfway through the novel, I began to wonder how Ray could have known all the things she was thinking about when she´d grown up on a remote island. And suddenly she begins to think about things that she couldn´t have known because nobody on the island talked about them or because these things only happened outside of the island. That didn´t make any sense to me.
Characters
The author´s characters are pale, predictable, and very superficial. Well, they seem like they were taken from real life, but nothing more. At the beginning of the story, Ray is a nice young girl who loves her life on the island. She believes in the myths that were told to her from an early age and does nothing that would endanger her island's peace. Towards the end of the book things got a little strange, as Ray knew things, she couldn´t know because of her isolated island life. It was simply weird and that feeling lingered until the end of the novel
Conclusion
It´s a shame, but this novel wasn´t worth the wait. I am disappointed and wonder why the author thought she had to write such a book. Love Show is nothing more than a poorly successful copy of the great film The Truman Show. This makes me sad because I´ve always liked the author´s books so far. The only thing that worked, is the cover. It fits the story perfectly. But all in all, no recommendation from my side.

Keine Frage, Britta Sabbags Schreibstil ist so wunderbar wie immer. Ihre Worte sind gut platziert und obwohl einige ihrer Sätze etwas holprig sind, sind die meisten sanft wie Seide. Man kann die wunderschöne Insel Aroha direkt vor dem inneren Auge sehen. Es war, als würde man beim Lesen der Geschichte durch das Paradies gehen. Bis auf die Tatsache, dass die Geschichte nicht neu ist. Wenn du mit dem Film Die Truman Show vertraut bist, weiß du, was ich meine.
Nach ein paar Kapiteln fragte ich mich, warum die Autorin dachte, sie müsse ein Buch über eine Realityshow schreiben. Die Handlung ist nicht neu und um ehrlich zu sein, sind Mr X, der Produzent und Ray nicht halb so gut wie die Originalfiguren des Films, Christof und Truman Burbank. Ray ist ein Teenager und lebt ihr Leben nicht so, wie es der Produzent der Show gerne hätte. Zunächst ist Ray ein fröhliches, etwas naives Mädchen, das ihr Leben liebt und die Menschen, die sie ihre Familie nennt. Die Autorin zeigt auf sensible Weise, dass Rays Leben sehr vorhersehbar ist. Dass ihre Hauptfigur mit der langweiligen Normalität, die sie jeden Tag erlebt, zufrieden ist. Und für den Leser sieht es auch irgendwie perfekt aus. Vielleicht zu perfekt. Denn nach ungefähr der Hälfte des Romans begann ich mich zu fragen, wie Ray all die Dinge wissen konnte, an die sie dachte, wo sie doch auf einer abgelegenen Insel aufgewachsen war. Und plötzlich beginnt sie über Dinge nachzudenken, die sie gar nicht wissen konnte, weil auf der Insel niemand darüber sprach oder weil diese Dinge nur außerhalb der Insel geschahen. Das ergab für mich überhaupt keinen Sinn.
Charaktere
Die Figuren der Autorin sind blass, vorhersehbar und sehr oberflächlich. Gut, sie wirken wie aus dem realen Leben gegriffen, mehr aber auch nicht. Ray ist am Anfang der Geschichte ein nettes junges Mädchen, das ihr Leben auf der Insel liebt. Sie glaubt an die Mythen, die ihr von klein auf erzählt wurden, und tut nichts, was ihren Inselfrieden gefährden würde. Gegen Ende des Buches wurde es etwas seltsam, da Ray Dinge wusste, die sie nicht wissen konnte, aufgrund ihres abgeschotteten Insellebens. Es war nur noch seltsam und dieses Gefühl blieb bis zum Ende des Romans bestehen.
Resultat
Es ist wirklich schade aber dieser Roman war das Warten nicht wert. Ich bin enttäuscht und frage mich, warum die Autorin dachte, so ein Buch schreiben zu müssen. Love Show ist nichts weiter als eine schlecht gelungene Kopie des großartigen Films Die Truman Show. Was mich traurig macht, weil mir die Bücher der Autorin bislang immer sehr gefallen haben. Das Einzige, was gelungen ist, ist das Cover. Es passt perfekt zur Geschichte. Aber alles in allem keine Empfehlung von meiner Seite.
