This one promised to be the perfect Christmas novel a reader could possibly ask for. Well, not even close to what I call “Christmas feeling”. Sad, but The Christmas Countdown couldn´t convince me. Not with the story and not with the characters. Well, maybe next time?

Story
Holly wants nothing but to be as far away as she can from her sister and ex-fiancée. The perfect place to be, the cozy cottage her aunt Clara owns. But only hiding from the world is never a good plan. The advents calendar, her aunt has created for Holly is the way, to find out who she is and what she wants. But will the plan work out the way her aunt is hoping it will?
Style
A nice, solid novel with too many repetitions of words and sentences. Unfortunately. Why Holly is with her aunt and what she wants to achieve there has been explained repeatedly and that has annoyed me over time. And then the scenes and side story with Beth and her daughter. I had a real déjà vu experience all the time. I always had a bad feeling that I had read it somewhere else.
Donna Ashcroft has a gently writing style and a not always very successful choice of words. For the most part, the story of Holly and Finn is told very sensitively. It was also nice to see that the characters have a certain depth. Unfortunately, the initial momentum was quickly ruined. On the one hand, because of the many unnecessary repetitions of words, on the other hand, the author lengthens the background story of Finn over many chapters and only comes to light in a somewhat clumsy way towards the end. That gave the whole thing an unnecessary heaviness that I didn´t like. Sure, a bit of drama or an argument between the two main characters is always appealing before it comes to a happy ending. But here it was just too much.
Characters
Many different characters come together here and form a nice group that in places knows how to entertain the reader very well. Holly´s aunt Clara is one of them. She has courage, drive, and goes through life with joy, which was just beautiful. Sure, she still has her problems and challenges to overcome, but she knows who she is and what she wants. And she also has her heart in the right place. I would also like to have an aunt like that.
Holly is hard to believe for me, one-half of an identical pair of twins. But if the author´s descriptions are to be believed, then she doesn´t look a bit like her twin sister. And by that, I don´t just mean the clothes she wears or the color she prefers. No, I´m talking about very mundane things like the same facial features, the same shape of the eyes, etc. With Holly, the author has created a character who on the one hand is a rock, but on the other hand, shines through uncertainties and total self-abandonment in this novel. She claims things for herself that she does not accept with Finn. That didn´t always go down well with me.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, the great potential was not used here. The novel is nice to read, no question about it, but nothing more than that. Too many trivialities make the novel look more shallow than well-written, and the characters lose credibility in the course of the plot. It´s a shame, but I clearly expected more from this book. Sad, but this novel is miles away from the real Christmas feeling.

Ein netter, solider Roman mit zu vielen Wort- und Satzwiederholungen. Leider. Warum Holly bei ihrer Tante ist und was sie dort erreichen will, wurde immer und immer wieder erklärt und das hat mich mit der Zeit genervt. Und dann die Szenen und Nebengeschichte mit Beth und ihrer Tochter. Da hatte ich andauernd ein regelrechtes Déjà-vu-Erlebnis. Ständig hatte ich das ungute Gefühl, das schon mal woanders gelesen zu haben.
Donna Ashcroft hat einen sanften Schreibstil und eine nicht immer ganz geglückte Wortwahl. Die Geschichte um Holly und Finn wird zum Großteil sehr feinfühlig erzählt. Es war auch schön zu sehen, dass die Figuren einen gewissen Tiefgang haben. Leider wurde der anfängliche Schwung dann schnell zunichtegemacht. Zum einen durch die vielen unnötigen Wortwiederholungen, zum anderen, weil die Autorin über viele Kapitel die Hintergrundgeschichte von Finn in die Länge zieht und erst gegen Ende damit etwas ungeschickt ans Licht kommt. Das gab dem Ganzen eine unnötige Schwere, die mir nicht gefiel. Sicher, ein bisschen Drama oder ein Streit zwischen den beiden Hauptfiguren ist immer reizvoll, ehe es dann zum Happy End kommt. Aber hier war das einfach zu viel.
Charaktere
Viele unterschiedliche Figuren kommen hier zusammen und bilden eine nette Gruppe, die den Leser stellenweise sehr gut zu unterhalten weiß. Hollys Tante Clara ist eine davon. Die hat Mut, Schwung und geht mit einer Freude durchs Leben, das war einfach nur schön. Sicher, sie hat auch so ihre Probleme und Herausforderungen zu meistern, aber sie weiß, wer sie ist und was sie will. Und das Herz am rechten Fleck hat sie auch. So eine Tante hätte ich auch gerne.
Holly ist für mich schwer zu glauben, die eine Hälfte eines eineiigen Zwillingspärchens. Doch wenn man den Beschreibungen der Autorin glauben darf, dann sieht sie ihrer Zwillingsschwester kein bisschen ähnlich. Und damit meine ich jetzt nicht nur die Kleidung, die sie trägt oder die Farbe, die sie bevorzugt. Nein, ich spreche da von ganz profanen Dingen wie gleiche Gesichtszüge, gleiche Form der Augen etc. Die Autorin hat mit Holly eine Figur erschaffen, die einerseits der Fels in der Brandung ist, andererseits aber durch Unsicherheiten und totale Selbstaufgabe in diesem Roman glänzt. Sie nimmt Dinge für sich in Anspruch, die sie bei Finn nicht gelten lässt. Das kam nicht immer gut bei mir an.
Resultat
Hier wurde das schöne Potenzial leider nicht genutzt. Der Roman ist nett zu lesen, keine Frage, aber mehr auch nicht. Zu viele Nebensächlichkeiten lassen den Roman stellenweise mehr seicht als schöngeschrieben wirken und die Figuren verlieren im Handlungsverlauf deutlich an Glaubwürdigkeit. Schade, aber von diesem Buch habe ich mir eindeutig mehr versprochen. Traurig, aber vom eigentlichen Weihnachtsfeeling ist dieser Roman meilenweit entfernt.
