Happy Halloween 2022

We don´t celebrate Halloween the same way, the Americans do it, but even in Germany, you can tell that after two years without being able to have a Halloween party or the typical trick-or-treat at your door, kids and some grown-ups alike were eager to at least have the fun of wearing a costume and enjoy some candies. Unfortunately, the actual Halloween fun fell on a Sunday, so again, no doorbell ringing and no obligatory trick or treat call.

But as every year, the sweet shelves were filled with all kinds of Halloween goodies. You could buy gummy bears in the shape of vampires, there were buckets of caramel-flavored popcorn, lollipops in the shape of spiders and I don't know what else. I saw some kids running around at the supermarket today (Monday) in a witch costume waving a wand. They looked fabulous!

For all those, who celebrate Halloween, I hope you will have fun and that you all stay safe and well.

Till next time

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #231 – And Again We Have Winter Time

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Caffeinated Reviewer and Reading Reality and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #231

No new books this week.

Sunday Post #188

A stressful and nerve-wracking week lies behind me. For almost two weeks now, my TV box isn´t working properly. A new software update from August literally killed my hardware. To find that out, I had to spend hours on the phone to get a customer agent on the phone. And it took me another four days to get one to talk about the solution I already knew and to get things started. Ugh!

To keep myself from screaming out loud I tried to read. A few pages but not enough to reach my goal of at least one read book for the Fraterfest Readathon. We see us next year …

Instead, I spent two hours mowing the lawn. I am still wondering if the grass is on speed or whatever drug because it is growing like hell. We are only two days away from starting November, but the garden looks as if it is still summer there.

The past few days we had great golden October weather. Bright sunshine, mostly blue skies, and it was warm. I went every day for my daily power walk and helped my elderly neighbor clean his garage and lift the empty beer crates into his trunk. His wife was so happy when I brought her the last nasturtium blossoms for her salad. Bright orange. Yummy.

Yesterday, Saturday, my new TV Box arrived. For me the signal to start watching the last few movies I still had left on my old receiver. A Simple Favor with Blake Lively, The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise, and Red Joan with Judy Dench. Monday is my day off and I hope that I will be able to install the new box without the help of technical support.

Today, Sunday, I slept long. The turning back of the clock at 3 am Saturday night was hopefully the last time I had to do it. Every year turning back to wintertime turns my day and night rhythm upside down and I need days to get back to a normal routine *sigh*

How was your week? Stay safe and healthy.

Happy reading

Du In Meiner Nähe by Lilian Kaliner

The next volume in the Firefly Creek series. This time, we see Erin fighting for her dream, her love, and the farm she inherited from her father. Life in a rough country dominated by men isn´t easy. The author shows again, what it means to be a strong woman. What determination and courage can do to make a difference. This novel is written in the same style and manner, as the others and yet different. But in a good way. And John will surprise you – literally.

✶✶✶✶

Erin is a passionate farmer, so there is little time to go out in Firefly Creek, the picturesque town in South Australia. But then she meets the smart banker Will. She enjoys the attention he gives her. When her father suddenly dies, the future of the farm is at stake. Luckily, Erin finds support from John, from the Bennetts' neighboring farm. Is he just her best friend? And what are Will's intentions? When everything falls apart, Erin must listen to her heart and see what really matters.
Story
Erin knows John forever. He is her best friend, her rock. And when her father dies suddenly, and she is left alone with a mourning mother and a reality that is far from what she thought she would inherit, she knows John is there for her. But is that all that she will ever get from him? Only friendship?

Style
The novel is wonderfully entertaining. The author shows the life of a family that, despite all the adversities, knows what is important in life. Love, loyalty, and family support. The tone ranges from light and humorous to cruel. Even in the most painful moments, a touch of humor can still be felt. I was just a little sorry that Kat is different in this third installment in the Firefly Creek series. She looks softened. Completely changed. I had to laugh heartily when she rode the mare (sorry, but I won't reveal more here), but her transformation generally didn't convince me. She literally stole the show from the main character, which I think is a shame. On the other hand, I would have liked to have seen more of the "old Kat".

Characters
Lilian Kaliner's female figures have one thing above all: strength and quick-wittedness. This may not be immediately apparent in some women, but these attributes are clearly there.

Erin is a woman who knows what she wants. How she gets it and what she wants to achieve with it. She has her future clearly in mind. She wants to make her breeding program a success, finally be financially independent and lead a self-determined life. When her father dies unexpectedly, however, Erin is presented with a very different reality. For me as a reader, it was nice to see how she masters her fate. Tackles things in her own unique way and never loses sight of her goal. In my eyes, she is the perfect woman for John.

Conclusion
A wonderfully entertaining novel that scores with the reader with great dialogues and scenes. The author takes you to great scenery, uses fantastic humor, and in one scene shows a creep where the hammer hangs in Firefly Creek. Splendid. Just read!

Happy reading

Deutsche Rezension

Stil

Herrlich. Einfach Lesen!

Aurora Erleuchtet by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

It is somehow sad to say it, but I had hoped that this last volume, Aurora´s End would thrill me to the moon and back. The reality: on the one hand I felt something like reading pleasure but on the other hand something like disappointment. I had clearly expected more. The story was too cheesy for me at times. A word I don't usually bring in context with the name Jay Kristoff at all. And despite all the action and events, the novel didn't really excite me. Entertain, yes. But really thrilled? No.

✶✶✶✶

What happens when you ask a bunch of losers and misfits to save the galaxy from an ancient, overpowering enemy? The ancient enemy wins, of course. Wait a moment. As it turns out, not every ending is an ending, and Tyler Jones and his Squad 312 still have a chance to rewrite their own. But the clock is ticking. Can they really save the galaxy? It takes a miracle for that...
Story
Squad 312 is fighting the enemy on different paths. None of them knows if the rest is still alive and well or dead. But one thing they do know. Aurora must do her job to end it and she will do it. No doubt about that. But what price will they all have to pay before the war is over? And how will their future look? Will they get the answers they need to survive and carry on?

Style
All the scene repetitions at the beginning. The resulting effect on me as a reader, it was strange. It was only after a few pages of confusion that I realized that there was an odd situation, a time warp, being shown for the characters in a weird way. According to the motto "And always greets the groundhog". Unfortunately, not as funny as with Bill Murray back then. On the one hand, I felt something like reading pleasure, but on the other hand also disappointment. Cheesy scenes and Jay Kristoff just don't mix. That is a pure contradiction. Admittedly, the story of Squad 312 is presented in a varied way and draws the reader into an often-fantastic story. And yes, I really enjoyed those passages. But unfortunately, there were too many pages with pure filling material for my taste.

Characters
It was clear that Aurora would either end up dying a hero's death or be pulled out of the affair in some other way by the writing duo. Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff took the latter. This resulted in a wonderful situation and new opportunities for Aurora, but for me, as a reader, it was too much kitsch, and everything is sunshine and roses.

The Aurora character has so much to offer. Her transformation is shown here in a brutal and energetic way. The price she pays for it on less beautiful ones. The way she understands things towards the end and knows how to act so that the enemy can finally be defeated - that was something. And yet I would have wished for a different ending for her. It didn't have to be a deadlier one, but one with less cheesy elements.

Conclusion
A solid novel and a good conclusion to the Aurora trilogy. But I don't really get excited. No question, I was well entertained and had the beginning of what I call reading pleasure. And yes, that sounds like a contradiction. But I wasn't really excited. There was too much kitsch in the sentences and scenes for me at times. A plus point, many open questions were answered logically and satisfactorily. The plot was well-developed, and it was great to see Aurora fight her way through all the odds. But in the end, I was disappointed. I had clearly expected more. Pity …

Deutsche Rezension

Stil

Schade …

Day Of The Libraries In Germany

I cannot remember the day on which this “special holiday” was created under the patronage of former President Richard von Weizsäcker. I was living abroad at the time and didn't see much of what was happening in Germany. At that time the internet wasn't as big a thing as it is today, and newspapers from Germany only appeared in the USA with some delay. Or not.

Only later, when the passion for reading had gripped me intensely again, did this day become a concept for me. In a bittersweet way. But that is a completely different matter, which I will not go into here today. What was once intended to bring the many libraries and reading back into focus has now been cast in a whole new light in times of social media and the circumstances of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and price increases everywhere. I would say the local cultural institution, library, or even the small community library is more important now than ever. As a meeting place, where you can acquire knowledge or just sit and enjoy a novel depending on your current mood.

I don't want to bore you with historical background knowledge and lots of temporal facts. Only that much:

On October 24, 1995, the Day of the libraries was launched under the patronage of former President Richard von Weizsäcker (1920-2015). On that same day in October 1828, a royal Saxon rentamtman named Karl Benjamin Preusker (1786–1871) founded the patriotic citizen library, which was actually only a place for students, teachers, and the commercial bourgeoisie. What sounds old-fashioned today was quite normal for people back then. In short, what was then the school library in 1832 was the first German public library.

Since 1996, this special day has been celebrated every year with various events by the now only around 8.900 libraries in Germany. Oh yes, the number of libraries is steadily decreasing. The whole point is to draw attention to libraries as mediators of information and knowledge and their cultural characteristics. And for book lovers like me, a day of reading. When life lets you read *sigh*

What is perhaps also worth mentioning is that the Karl Preusker Medal is awarded every year on October 24th. It is considered a non-material award for those people and institutions (i.e. those who receive it every year) who have made outstanding contributions to the book trade, publishing, public libraries, or the field of literature, among other things. Oh yes, and there's also the Library of the Year award.

With this hopefully small insight into a few historical facts of the book world, I say goodbye for today and wish you a lot of fun reading.

Sunday Post #187

The past week was a very sportive one. It took me over two hours to cut back a huge bush with a handsaw. And no, I don´t own any tools that work with fuel or electricity for that kind of garden work. After that, I mowed the new lawn with a garden scissor to steam off the anger I felt after I noticed that some of the carefully grown columbines had been destroyed. Who does that?!

It felt good to prepare the garden in bright and warm sunshine for the new spring flowers and to see that we´ve got some tea roses in one corner of the garden. Wish me luck that I will be able to replant them next week before my new neighbor kills them with the mower.

During my daily walks, I collected even more chestnuts. Big chestnuts. They look gorgeous and it makes literally fun to search for them. One I found behind a barrier. I could put my arm underneath it and grab it with my left hand. Unfortunately, the chestnut was right next to a splash of bird droppings...

My Fraterfest Readathon challenge isn´t going too well. I am barely able to read despite the good news, that all my medical test results have come back negative.

I can´t concentrate enough to read a full page let alone an entire book. And as you might have noticed, not much did happen on my blog. Ah well …

How was your week? Stay safe and healthy.

No new books this week. Good girl ...

Sunday Post #186

An exhausting week is over. Due to the still ongoing interrupted logistical chain and plastic problems some companies are having, most products aren´t available round the clock at the supermarket. Getting them has become a bit of a game around here. Ugh! The good news is, almost all my test results have been negative. Yay for that! The one I did on Friday is still at the lab *Fingers crossed* that it will be negative too.

I am good to go with some trimming in the garden, so that will be part of my plans next week. Another book got finished for the current New Release Challenge. My next read will be a book for the Fraterfest Readathon 2022 AND the NR challenge. Wish me luck …

And finally, I experienced another earthquake. The second one this year. This morning at 6:14 am an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 shocked me. There was a clearly noticeable jolt through the building, the door frames groaned, and my books wobbled on the shelves. Not a nice feeling.

How was your week? Stay safe and healthy.

Sunday Post #185

My third and last week of vacation went by in a blink. I haven´t been very active on my blog. It was so warm and felt more like the last days of summer than autumn days and I thought I rather enjoy the last warm sun of the year. I collected some more chestnuts and although my autumn plate doesn´t look very decorative, I like the view of lavender from the garden combined with the dark, rich, brown color of the chestnuts on a clay plate I own now for over thirty years. How time flies …

On Wednesday I reached my Good Reads Reading Challenge goal of 24 read books.

I got my flu shot this week and after that the sniffles. Not sure if it is a result of the vaccination or just because I was walking every evening. As soon as the sun isn´t shining anymore the air turns chilly and a bit windy. Maybe that´s why my nose is a bit “running” as we call it here in Germany *smile*

The rest of the week was a bit unbalanced. I slept long, was tired during the day, and couldn´t sleep during the night. I discovered my passion for fruit drinks with added ingredients like iron and some vitamins. All sugar-free.

So, today is the last vacation day and I used it to take some Instagram pictures, write this post, and edit some pictures. I am preparing myself for the upcoming Fraterfest Readathon as well as the HoHoHo-Readathon. Just for the fun of reading a book.

And I managed to read and finish another book. My pile of unread books on my desk went down from 10 to 8. And the eight I am currently reading.

How was your week? Stay safe and healthy.

Happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #227 – Rainy Beginning Of Fall

Stacking The Shelves #227

No new books this week.

Sunday Post #184

My second week of vacation really feels like a vacation now. We had a mix of sun, clouds, wind, and rain. And lots of brown leaves on the ground. I picked as many chestnuts as I could find, some still within their prickly shell. Somehow, I am fascinated by their dark, rich, and shiny brown. Reminds me of Cognac. Guess, fall is here. I planted some last flowers, mowed the lawn, and took some pictures of the bushes and trees in the back garden. Hopefully, my landlady will give me permission to cut them back in shape. I am planning on using some of the cut wood for the flower bed in the front of the house. I also called my doctor to make an appointment for my annual flu shot and to get a new Ibuprofen prescription. I was quite surprised when I realized that the nurse had given me two appointments instead of one. Well, seems with the retirement of my old doctor some things have changed. Blunt said I am not happy with that.

On Monday the annual celebration of the fall of the wall is giving us a day off. But I don´t feel like celebrating. Not because the weather is typical fall weather. No, my head´s just not in the mood. The past week I tried to read, wrote some reviews, and did some blog-related stuff.

How was your week? Stay safe and healthy.

Happy reading

Welcome

Vi
I am an avid reader, book blogger, and painter who loves to talk and write about books. A day without one in my hands is a wasted one. Skilled florist with a degree in writing - oh yes, that works! I like many genres, but horror is nothing for me. Here on Inkvotary I will show my love for books, things that move me and what´s going on off the blog - called life. The personal as well as life in general.
