Goodbye 2019 And Welcome 2020

With a new decade starting in a few hours, I am kind of relieved that 2019 is coming to an end. It was a shit year or as the Queen once called it an “Annus horribilis”. And from that point of view, 2020 can only get better. In January my father has been admitted to hospital from one second to the next without any warning and for him, it was not clear if he would come out alive again. He did, but life isn´t the same now with all the meds he has to take and his illness getting worse.

In February we heard the sad news that Rosamunde Pilcher had died. Her novels were made into TV movies and in Germany, she is quite famous for her love for Cornwall and her various books.

April was the months where I watched together with millions of others with growing shock and horror how the world’s most famous Cathedral Notre Dame was partly destroyed by flames. Its famous wood framework collapsed, and the also famous wood tower no longer exists. I can still see the yellow and orange flames, the powerful fire that lightened up the skies in the night from April 15th to April 16th and destroyed what others had built hundreds of years ago.

The summer of 2019 was hot, but not as hot as the summer of 2018. According to German meteorologists, it has been the third hottest summer since the weather recordings started in 1881. And the debate about climate change has reached a level where it has become quite clear that we can´t go on the way we´re used to. For me personally, it means that I thought about what I can do to bring my share of Environmental awareness into the game. 2020 will be a game-changer for me on that front and I hope that I will be at least a bit successful.

Germany celebrated in October the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. Thirty years after they opened the wall, we still face some differences between East and West.

A broken pipe in one of my bathroom walls gave me during the past two months a growing nightmare and some sleepless nights. Both problems are fixed now but I know that I will take some of the dust and dirt from it into the new year. Oh well …

2019 was also the year I lost some dear friends. One of them was not even 50 and had to leave his wife and family behind. Why do the Good have to die so young?

As always, I have not really set any New Year´s resolutions for me. I am not the kind of person who can make them real, spoken about health, fitness or other things. At the beginning of 2019, I had started to change some of my old habits, and I will continue doing so in 2020. Healthier food, more sport, and less sugar among some other things are on my list and I hope that I will continue my efforts I´ve started in 2019.

When it comes to books, bookish things or my reading habits, I have to say that I didn´t read as many books as I´ve done in recent years. Somehow it took me sometimes longer to read a book or to write my review about it as I was used to the years before. But reading and blogging is still my passion and so I see no reason why that should change in 2020. I will do some challenges during the year as every year and the New Release Challenge is one of them.

For now, I say goodbye to 2019 and hope you will have a healthy and well New Year´s Eve and a great start into 2020.

Happy New Year

Under Currents by Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts delivers with Under Currents a fast-paced and well-written novel with a topic that is as cruel as it is unintelligible: Child abuse. No matter in what way a child must endure the horrible suffering that comes from it, it is NEVER right. The way how the author shows it in this novel is brutal but told in a sensitive way and that is what makes it way more insistent than any other writing style could ever achieve.

Within the walls of a tasteful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina´s Blue Ridge Mountains, young Zane Bigelow feels like a prisoner of war. Strangers – and even Zane´s own aunt across the lake – see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children´s ballet recitals and baseball games. Zane and his sister know the truth: There is something terribly wrong. As his father´s violent controlling rages – and his mother´s complicity – become more and more oppressive, Zane counts the years, months, and days until he can escape. He looks out for little Britt, warning her to Be smart. Be careful. In fear for his very life, he plays along with the insidious lie that everything is fine while scribbling his real thoughts in a secret journal he must carefully hide away. When one brutal, shattering night finally reveals cracks in the façade, Zane begins to understand that some people are willing to face the truth, even when it hurts. As he grows into manhood and builds a new kind of family, he will find that while the darkness of his past may always shadow him, it will also show him what is necessary for good or triumph – and give him strength to draw on when he once again must stand up and defend himself and the ones he loves.

Story
Zane is counting the years until he is free to go and leave his brutal parents. His father, a famous and successful surgent knows how to keep control over everything he sees as his own belongings. His children included. After an especially brutal hit from his father, Zane starts to write down everything that has ever happened to him and is still happening with the hope that one day he might be able to get justice the way he and his sister deserve it. After years of abuse one day, Zane has had enough and hits back. Starting a process in which the famous façade his father was always keen to keep up is shattered in a second.

Style
The story itself starts with the cruel and bloody daily life Zane and his sister Britt know can´t be normal. I was shocked when I read the first brutal scene, though it was written in a very sensitive way. The fact, that violence between a man and a woman was shown in a very blunt way gave me the chills. But when the author started to present her readers with scenes where out of nothing, Zane´s father starts to torture and batter his son, I was shaken and not sure if I wanted to continue reading.

I did. And it was totally worth it. Page after page Nora Roberts unfolds a story that thrilled me more and more. There is always a good part in such a novel, and the author delivers that in the most perfect way. Her writing style is soft and intense but still with ease. You are always aware of the importance and cruelty of the things Zane´s father did to his family but you also get to see how Zane and his sister found a peaceful way and to keep going and what life they both build from the cruel and bloody past.

Characters
Zane and Britt seem to be defenseless, but they are not. Within hours of the last violent hit through their father, they find help in a place they would never have imagined possible. And it turns out, that no matter what their parents had intended to do to them, they´ve failed. Zane and Britt are strong, though they had just escaped a living nightmare.

I was totally impressed by how the two teenagers coped with everything that had happened to them. How they kept their strength and will to stay good and that there must be more in life for them than an abusive father and the richness they were born into.

Conclusion
Nora Roberts once again shows that she knows how to thrill and bond her readers. Yes, the topic is no fun and for sure not easy to write about. But the author shows with this book the highest level of style and elegance even though she writes about the cruelest behavior towards a child. And the way how she turns things around during the ongoing plot is not only very exciting but also very entertaining. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

Vicious-Das Böse In Uns by V. E. Schwab

Vicious is one of THE book surprises I´ve had the pleasure of reading during 2019. Watching the entire book community being thrilled about the author´s books, I wasn´t quite sure what to expect after reading the summary for this one. But after I´ve read another of her work, I was sure that this one had to be either an entertaining success or a bad failure. Well, guess what – it was the first.

Life – real life – is not a struggle between good and evil. It´s a struggle between evil and something worse. Victor Vale and Eli Ever want to die. Not, however, to remain dead, but to rise again with extraordinary abilities. As young, brilliant medical students, they know exactly what they are doing. They plan the experiment meticulously – and they are successful: both come back to life transformed. Eli develops an astonishing regenerative power and becomes practically immortal Victor can inflict or take away pain. What they have no control over is the tragedy triggered by their experiment. Because superpowers alone don´t make heroes … (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary).
Story
Victor and Eli want to figure out how they can become extraordinary and what that would mean for them. Their curiosity and the way how they try to become EO´s is the start of a dramatic journey where Victor realizes at some point that he is always the one who pays the price and Eli the one who gets away with whatever he has in mind. Until one day when Victor sees a chance to change things and have his revenge.

Style
The style is magical, morbid, bloody, and cruel, and yet one of the best books I´ve had the pleasure of reading during the past twelve months. I don´t know HOW the author did it or does it, but there is no ordinary thing in this novel. You are haunted by the plot and story from the very first line to the last and thrown into a world of magic, blood, and human failure without seeing the figures using a wand or spell to get what they want.

Yes, there are scenes in which you could easily say this is more a thriller than a fantasy novel with some magical parts in it but, to be honest, the combination of thriller, fantasy, and magic was it, what made me want to know how Victor would end things. My eyes were literally glued to the pages and after I had started reading it, I couldn´t put it aside. So this one belongs to the very few books I´ve read overnight in one single swoop.

Characters
I LOVE Victor Vale. He is one of my most favorite characters since I know V. E. Schwab´s books. The balance between evil and good in him is shown in such an entertaining way, holy moly! He was, among the fantastic plot, one of the big surprises I saw while reading Vicious. A cool guy.

Conclusion
A novel filled with some unexpected twists and turns, a fantastic main figure, and a story that goes beyond every magic you can expect from a well-written book. I absolutely enjoyed this book, the darkness in it but also the light that was shown through Sydney and how she sees the world. For me, one of the best books I´ve read in 2019 and for sure not the last I will read by the author. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #97 – A Decade Ends

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it.  And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #97

I won a book with some swag on Instagram but as long as the book hasn´t arrived, I think I don´t post a picture. But as soon as I can hold it live in my hands, I will let you know.

Sunday Post #54

During the past week, I was cleaning up my household, sorting things out, and enjoying a very quiet and peaceful Christmas Eve and holidays. It was quite relaxing. I treated myself with a wireless mouse for my laptop, some books, and other stuff. Now, I am slowly starting to get everything back in place.
I am way behind with all the blogging stuff, not to mention all the reviews and other posts I still have to post before the 31st. But on the other hand, I am more than happy that I now have my head back in the blogging game at all. Usually, I would have written some wrap-up posts for all the challenges I did during the past months, but for now, this post will have to do.

I finished my Library Love Challenge with 20 read books, which leaves me still being a Dewey Decimal. That is ok and I am quite satisfied. There is no chance for me to read 4 other library books before the 31st so I´ll leave it at that and see how far I will come next year.

With the audiobook challenge, I am not as satisfied or happy. I wasn´t able to finish my audiobook, which got nothing to do with the audiobook itself but how my body reacts while I listen to an audiobook. I fall asleep every time, and during cleaning a room I simply start to stop listening to the audio because I am too focused on the carpet or furniture I am cleaning that moment. So, I have to rewind the audio all the time, and that is annoying.

The Backlist Reader challenge will start next year for me again. I wanted to read 8 books of my backlist and managed to finish 9 so goal achieved. Not sure which "Backlist" challenge I will sign up for 2020, but I will do one, one way or the other.

How was your week?

Of Blood And Bone by Nora Roberts

Not sure why this trilogy so far isn´t able to thrill me. Yes, I kind of enjoyed reading it, and, yes, the story somehow knew how to keep me within the pages, but else? Either the style the author shows with this trilogy isn´t really mine or I am missing something that actually IS Nora Roberts for me: pure romance.

It looks like an ordinary life, an everyday family: chores to be done, squabbling at the dinner table, a basketball game or a swim in the nearby stream. But beyond the edges of this peaceful farm, the world has changed. Fallon Swift has two loving parents, but her true father died long ago, in what was known as the New Hope Massacre. The distant city where her mother once dabbled casually in the craft has been in ruins for years, reclaimed by nature, desolate since the Doom descended and billions grew sick and died. Traveling anywhere now is a danger, as vicious gangs of Raiders and fanatics called “Purity Warriors” search for their next victim. Those like Fallon, in possession of gifts, are hunted – and as her thirteenth birthday looms, her true nature, her identity as The One, can no longer be hidden. Now the time has come for Fallon to walk away from her home, into a mysterious shelter in the forest where her training can begin. Under the guidance of Mallick, whose skills have been honed over centuries, she will complete three quests: She will learn the old ways of healing and find powers within herself that she never imagined. And when the time is right, she will take up the sword and fight. For until she grows into the woman she was born to be, the world outside will never be whole again. The people of New Hope are still standing, clinging to survival – but under constant threat from the darkness. In the fragments of her visions, she can see them, trying to defeat the suffering and injustice. She cannot yet join the battle. For two years, in the idyllic hideaway of their cottage, she must study and spar with her mentor, and come to understand the forces of the light, the magicks of faerie and elf and shifter. But the time is coming when she must face the darkness, too – for the sake of the family she left behind, and all those who have placed their hope and faith in The One.
Story
After living a happy and peaceful life with her family, Fallon has now to go and learn everything she needs to learn to do what she has to do as The One. It is not easy for her to leave her family behind, but she also knows that she has to do it and that something is waiting for her, she never expected to be there and that she will find something that will help her.

Style
This novel is not like all the other books Nora Roberts has ever written. This time, Fallon stays in the focus. The reader sees how she lived with her family, how she grew up and that life after the cruel massacre in New Hope has changed life entirely. But I also have to say that I am not as thrilled about this trilogy as all the other Nora Roberts fans I´ve met over the years. There is not much romance in here to find, or at least not in the way I expect when reading a Nora Roberts book. Good, this is more set in the dystopian genre, but still. Nonetheless, I somehow enjoyed reading this second book of The One. It was kind of nice to see how Fallon grew up, how she developed and used her ability, and how she sees the world.

Characters
Fallon is after her training with Mallick ready to do what destiny has chosen her to be. And she does it in a very unique way. She is a down to earth kind of girl, sees things in a different way, and force is something she does not see as the only option. Trust and loyalty are what she wanted, and she gets it.

And when she finally meets Duncan and starts to realize what role he plays in her life, she is more than willing to do what she has to do, but on her own terms.

Conclusion
This isn´t the usual Nora Roberts novel you might expect when you know the author from her other work. And yes, it took me some pages to get into this and see some sort of reading pleasure in it. But in the end, I am not as thrilled as her other fans. Yes, the story is different from her other work, and yes, I had some pleasure reading how Fallon became what she was meant to become. On the other hand, I prefer the pure romance Nora Roberts is famous for and Of Blood and Bone is not like those novels. Read for yourself and judge for yourself.

Happy reading

Wie Du Mich Siehst by Tahereh Mafi

A Very Large Expanse Of Sea
is my first Tahereh Mafi book and for sure not the last. I´ve been touched, got emotionally involved, was shocked and incredibly moved while reading this novel. The world is such a harsh place for some and the cruelty some of us experience while trying to live their life is one of the many things the author talks about in this book.

A small ton in the USA: Shirin´s everyday life has become a nightmare. She´s had enough of the insolent looks, the humiliating comments and the physical attacks she has to endure because she is a Muslim and wears a hijab. She takes refuge in listening to music and in breakdance training with her brother and his friends. Shirin has decided not to trust anyone anymore. Until she meets the boy Ocean at her new high school. He is the first person in a long time who really wants to get to know Shirin. Startled, Shirin harshly rejects him. For her, Ocean is from a world from which hate and rejection have so far been the main confrontation. But then everything turns out differently… (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary).
Story
Shirin is sick and tired of having to be – again – the new girl at school. She stopped counting how often she and her family had to move because of her parents´ undying wish to have a better life and start for their children. But again, she is the new girl, the one who frightens her classmates because of the fact that she is a Muslim and wears a hijab. And when she meets Ocean James, everything changes.

Style
Tahereh Mafi has a unique way to point out things. She writes in a clear but blunt way about how people treat everything that is different in a harsh, if not to say, brutal way. The author writes openly about all the emotions, feelings, and situations she is only too familiar with and shows her readers a side of the medal that isn´t beautiful. The world is a cruel place, hard, unfairly, and reacts with fear, anger, and violence to everything that is different from what the person is used to or knows. The author strikes right in the heart with this novel.

Characters
Shirin is a teenager who is very familiar with starting school at a new school. It is always the same and she is sick and tired of it. But when she meets Ocean James and starts to discover how it feels falling in love with someone, she finally begins to realize that she might have done what she always accused others around her of doing with her. I was very impressed when I read that scene where Shirin is honest with herself and sees that she made mistakes herself and that she did exactly all the things she never wanted to do but did to keep others from hurting her. For me, Shirin is an exceptional teenager who is willing to learn and change as long as she can be her true self and keep her principles. What a remarkable girl!

Conclusion
This book is awesome! A brilliantly well-written novel that shows not only an emotional story, which is mercilessly honest, brutal, and sensitive but also presents a main figure that speaks about her life with irony and sarcasm. In the end, I was very impressed by Shirin and had to think about a lot. This is no novel you can finish and then go on with your life as if you never read this book. This one leaves an impact on you one way or another. If not, you can´t be human. So if this title is new to you, read it and see for yourself how the world is seen by others and how Tahereh Mafi writes about it. Highly recommended.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays

You know it is Christmas when Little Lord Fauntleroy airs on TV, the Disney channel shows the x-mas movies that had their premiere last year in the US and when the TV magazine tells you that you can watch the Sisi movies with the late Romy Schneider during the two holidays, like every year. Somehow it wouldn´t be Christmas if those movies wouldn´t be shown on television.

I am not really in a festive mood. My Advent plate is finally up on the table with the candles and I will light them later in the evening. All my other decoration is still in the box and will stay there until next year. Though I am not much of a decorator when it comes to Christmas. During my time in the US, the entire house was filled with all kinds of festive decoration and the little Christmas village on the dining room table grew bigger and bigger day by day.

Fond memories.

Although the holidays are supposed to be the time where families come together this year things will be different. The past twelve months have been some tough ones and as much as I would love to celebrate Christmas with my father, I am not sure if this will happen.
But to all those who celebrate, no matter how and where I wish you ...

Carlotta-Vom Internat In Die Welt by Dagmar Hoßfeld

This is a series for kids I became aware of a few years ago when my library got the first three books. I was hooked and had a really good time reading all the Carlotta-books. And this last one is a wonderful finish to the series. I loved the quick dialogues and the way how Carlotta and Katie were acting together. Yup, that one closes the series in a very entertaining way. Thank you Dagmar Hoßfeld for those great books.

But is that what Carlotta wants? Her good friend Katie has a completely different idea: How about a trip through Europe together? Carlotta thinks the idea is pretty cool. She has no idea that she will even see some former classmates on this trip… (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Carlotta is happy. School is done and she is planning and organizing the last things for her four-week trip across Europe. Together with her best friend Katie she wants to conquer as much as possible. Spain, Austria, Greece, The Netherlands, France, and every space between. The world has so much to offer and for an eighteen-year-old girl, freedom is the most precious thing.

Style
The style is fun, full of humor, a bit sarcasm and great dialogues between Carlotta and her best friend Katie. There isn´t one page that doesn´t entertain you. Good, you won´t see any big surprises here, but the fact, that some old figures from earlier books showed up again, was a great plus. Meeting Sofie again was just wonderful. It is quite clear that the author has finished the series with this novel. It was wonderful, more or less, to watch Carlotta grow from ten to eighteen and to see how she deals with her classmates and how she started to get a feeling for what she wanted to become later in life.

The author shows the reader the world in a very clear way. And it is very entertaining to see how Carlotta´s parents deal with the fact, that Carlotta knows exactly what she wants and what not and that she is very aware of the fact that she no longer wants to live behind the boundaries her mother was always eager to set.

Characters
She has grown up. Carlotta is now eighteen and wants to see the world. Something her mother doesn´t understand. But having finished school and with friends around the world, for Carlotta is nothing impossible. She wants to try things, loves her camera beyond anything else, and knows that life has just begun. Her energy, her adventurous will and that friends are the best that can happen to you besides your family, is brought to the reader in a wonderful story and with a wonderfully created main figure.

Conclusion
This book is the perfect closure to the Carlotta-series. It was a pleasure reading it and seeing how the main figure starts to conquer the world. For kids and grown-ups alike a very entertaining series.

Happy reading

Dagmar Hoßfeld was born 1960 in Kiel, Germany. When she was a child, she wanted to become a veterinarian, farmer or studs owner. The fact that she has decided otherwise, is due to her son. When he was about half a year old, she was eager to write a children´s book. She sat down at her desk – and didn´t stop writing. Luckily! Dagmar Hoßfeld lives in a little village between the Baltic Sea and the Schlei and, as she says, has the most beautiful profession in the world: author.

Weekly Book Wrap-Up #96 – Two Nights Until Christmas

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC or just bought one myself.

Stacking The Shelves #96

This week two books arrived. I made myself a Christmas present with Christi Daugherty´s A Beautiful Corpse and Never Let Me Fall by Abbie Roads.

Sunday Post #53

Only two nights until Christmas and I can say that too much has happened over the past week. One of the happier things: My wall is fixed, and I can use my kitchen again. Yay! Good, my cabinets and the light are still down, and I will have to wait until the wall is dry enough to get them back in place. But I guess between the years I can put them back up and get everything back where it belongs. I am in no festive mood so far, with all the cleaning and vacuuming and sorting out. My spring clean is either early done or a very late one – depends on how you see it 😄. But I see the new wall as an early Christmas present and am very happy about it. The last week was a very exhausting one and all the chaos had its impact on my mood too.

I had planned to be with my dad on his birthday on Thursday, but my stepmom knew what to do to prevent that. Her behavior lately is no fun and it is not easy for me to deal with it. So, instead of being with my dad on his big day, I ran some errands, went grocery shopping and had a date with a needle: I finally got my flu shot. To be honest, I am more than happy when this year is finally over.

On the book side, I started one of two left new releases I received from a publisher. The deadline is very close, but I am confident that I will read and review them before the year is over.

How was your week?

Happy reading

Eisgrab by Mads Peder Nordbo

After I had read the first book of this series, I wanted to know more about the main figure and the story itself. Good, I had my problems with the first third of Cold Fear (Kold Angst) which seemed a bit dry and I couldn´t get quite into it, but then – firework. Mads Peder Nordbo lit up a perfect mix of emotions, brutality, and smart guessing brought to the reader´s eye with an incredible fascinating Matthew Cave in the spotlight.

Eisgrab*

Grønland-Greenland #2

Original Title Kold Angst
English Title Cold Fear**
Publisher Fischer TB on November 27, 2019
Genre Thriller
Pages 453
Format Paperback

✶✶✶✶✶

A weekend trip with fatal consequences: When Matthew Cave starts looking for his half-sister Arnaq, he has no idea of the danger to his life and that of his mysterious companion Tupaarnaq. Because they find many traces of blood in this remote place, which point to a massive crime. And they discover a mysterious underground bunker that was part of an American base years ago. At that time, secret medical experiments were carried out, in which Matthew´s father was also involved. When Matthew follows the trail, not only the American military but also the Greenlandic police are interested in his investigations. (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Matthew is searching for some answers. He wants to find his father but on the other hand, he is afraid of the moment. Yes, he needs some answers but not at any price. He has his half-sister Arnaq and getting to know her bit by bit is sometimes enough for him. And the story he is on is helping him to deal with everything and still live his life the best he can. But when he missed the chance to get his half-sister home and she is nowhere to find he blames himself and starts to do what he does best: asking questions.

Style
I had some problems with the first third of the book. During those pages the author jumps back and forth with his thriller, giving the reader an insight into the present day of Matthew Cave searching for his half-sister and the past where Matthew´s father Tom was part of an experiment. I don´t mind if an author is doing that, because it gives me an insight into two stories. My problem was that, at first, the story itself couldn´t grip me. I read the chapters with Matthew in the present of the thriller and that part was very entertaining. The chapters with the things his father experienced around twenty years back, was what gave me a confusing start into this thriller. It was not easy to follow that story or to understand everything at first sight. But then it made the famous click and the plot literally exploded with action, a psychological finesse and a fantastic main figure.

Characters
Matthew is totally different from the figure I´ve seen in the first book. Once tortured with grief, pain, and the loss of his loved ones, he is now healing and even more determined to find answers and to protect those he got left in his life. He still mourns the death of his wife and daughter, but it seems that his nightmares are over now. The writing is his way to find answers and to heal his private life and him personally. The life and story of his father and, for that matter, his own story is something he wants to come to terms with. But on his terms. His job is no longer a lifeline who keeps him alive. It is something he likes doing and something that gives him the freedom to do his private search for answers at the same time. I liked it very much that Matthew has now the strength to say if he can write an article or not because he shows clearly that he has to understand the things he is writing about. And when the entire material he has to deal with is too complex in its entirety, he is honest with himself and others. That is the integrity you don´t find everywhere in journalism or the news world.

Conclusion
This thriller is in its very own way brutal, cruel, bloody, and shows a psychological finesse I watched with growing tension. There are many surprising twists and unexpected turns and it became soon very clear that this book was very different from the first one – concerning Matthew and the story itself. In a very good way, I might add. I am beyond excited and can´t wait to read the next Matthew Cave thriller.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #121 – The Heirloom Garden by Viola Shipman

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy.

There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

When I first came across a Viola Shipman novel, I wanted to read it because we share the same first name. The stories are always about family, love, and loyalty. Always presented with a hint of humor and a figure who has the feet on the ground and a huge heart. When I found this novel a few days ago at the publisher´s program for spring 2020 and read the summary, I knew that I want it. The cover is an additional plus, compared to all the other covers the German publisher used in the past for his books. Yes, behind the pseudonym Viola Shipman is a man. Surprised?

When Abby Peterson moves to Grand Haven, Michigan, with her family – a husband traumatized during his service in the Iraq War and a young daughter searching for stability – they find themselves next door to Iris and are slowly drawn into their reclusive neighbor´s life where, united by loss and a love of flowers, Iris and Abby slowly unearth their secrets.

The English original book will be published by Grayson House on April 28, 2020, as Hardcover, Trade Paperback, eBook and audiobook.

Sunday Post #52

I am glad that the week is over. I feel miserable and have to admit that the entire bathroom situation has finally its impact on me. Somewhen last week I was searching a solid half-hour for some vegetable broth – and almost turned nuts over it! And I had to learn that I am not able, at least not at the moment, to be all smiles and fun and a good girl when I talk with my father. His dementia has gone worse and we don´t know if we can celebrate his birthday next week or not. I called him on Friday to see how things are and while we were talking, his mood changed. The call ended with him in rage and me in tears. It is so damn hard to see a man who was always the one whom I could turn to for advice or help, now being so aggressive within an instant. If something is not in the right place at his home, hell breaks loose. Literally. I try to tell myself that it isn´t him who accuses me of all the bad things, that it is his illness, but still, it is hard to keep a light tone and smile in your face while you are treated like a bloody thief. I am still shaken to the core.

Additional to that I am talking a lot with one of my good friends. A wonderful woman who now needs help but is not really ready to admit that to herself. I know what she is going through and what would help her, and when we text each other she always confirms that her Doc told her the exact same things as I do. Well, I must have done something right at some point in my life when I am at least able to see the situation and analyze it others are in, right?

If everything goes as planned, I might have my bathroom wall fixed and everything back in place again before Christmas day. At least that´s what the mason keeps telling me. Either he is a magician who can create a new wall within no time with a wand or he is using a material and a technique I am not sure I can trust or want. Well, I will know more next Monday.

Yesterday I spent half the day getting my spring 2020 book list done and emailed to the publisher. And boy is that list long! If all my requests get approved, I will be a busy reading bee for at least the first half of 2020. Some books I´ve been waiting for months to see on the publisher´s website finally appeared, and it was like spending some hours in paradise.

About the Christmas decoration. I still have nothing decorated. And I know myself that much, that I will probably only have my Advent wreath out and its candles burning by next Sunday but nothing else. I am far away from being near any Christmas mood and know that if the mason can keep his word, I will be cleaning my entire apartment from all the brown dust that comes out of the open wall before I can sit down and relax and enjoy a good Christmas meal or Christmas day at all.

How was your week?
