Weekly Book Wrap-Up #68 – It´s Springtime!

With the Weekly Book Wrap-Up, I give you a bit of an insight into all the new books that have arrived at my place. No matter if I won a giveaway, got approved for a reviewer´s copy, an ARC, or just bought one myself. Everything that I add to my shelves, in what way ever and read during the past week or am still reading, I will write about it. And maybe I tell you a bit about the upcoming things on Inkvotary, that is if I don´t forget it and have something to share with you *smile*

I am linking up with Tynga´s Reviews / Reading Reality and Caffeinated Reviewer and hope you´ll have fun reading it and maybe get the one or the other book inspiration.

Stacking The Shelves #68

I pre-ordered The Queen Of Nothing by Holly Black, but despite that, I have not bought any other book or had one in the mail. Showing it anyway.

But I´ve got a beautiful bookmark today, which I´ve won on the author´s Facebook page. Britta Sabbag is a German author, who is very famous for the book "The little bumblebee Bommel" (translation of the German title) which she wrote together with Maite Kelly. Yap, the one from the famous Irish family. The bookmark and card shown in the two pictures below are from her newest book Blackwood-Letters to me. Thought I translate you the title, because it is a German new release this year.

Sunday Post #25

Spring has sprung, finally, and I took some pictures while walking around. Personally, I see some transformation happening, physically and emotionally. It seems that I am way less productive than I used to be and to be honest, I don´t like it at all. My listlessness has gotten worse and it has become very clear that I have to do some major changes. My attempt to wean my body and brain – the most difficult thing to do – from old habits = eating sweet stuff and having sugar in almost every food I am eating, has failed miserably. Good, I don´t eat convenience-food anymore, unless I can cook it myself, but besides that? I feel bad about it because I KNOW that it is a good thing to stay away from the white poison, sugar undoubtedly is. But living it is something completely different.

Well, I am not giving up on that goal. Not after I´ve seen myself in broad daylight in the mirror of a shop-window. Holy heck! That was awful!!

The Hollow by Nora Roberts

It was quite refreshing and a real adventure to read this trilogy. Until those books, I was used to reading only pure romance novels the author had written. This here is different, and yet so incredibly familiar to her other work. The mixture of paranormal fiction with the real-life we all know, that made me curious. And of course, I wanted to know how things unfold, after finishing the first book Blood Brothers.

The Hollow*
by Nora Roberts
Sign Of Seven Trilogy #2
Publisher Jove Books on May 6, 2008
Genre Novel
Pages 336
Format Paperback
Goodreads
✶✶✶✶½

For Fox, Caleb, Gage and the other residents of Hawkins Hollow, the number seven portends doom-ever since, as boys, they freed a demon trapped for centuries when their blood spilled upon The Pagan Stone … Now, as the dreaded seventh month looms before them, the men can feel the storm brewing. Already they are plagued by visions of death and destruction. But this year, they are better prepared, joined in their battle by three women who have come to The Hollow. Layla, Quinn, and Cybil are somehow connected to the demon, just as the men are connected to the force that trapped it. Since that day at The Pagan Stone, town lawyer Fox has been able to see into others´ minds, a talent he shares with Layla. He must earn her trust because their link will help fight the darkness that threatens to engulf the town. But Layla is having trouble coming to terms with her newfound ability – and this intimate connection to Fox. She knows that once she opens her mind, she´ll have no defenses against the desire that threatens to consume them both...
Story
While Quinn and Cal take care of their upcoming wedding, Layla fights against the feelings Fox triggers in her. What is the most natural thing in the world for Fox is a great challenge and an almost insurmountable obstacle for Layla: Love. She finds this makes the fight against the demon even more confusing and complicates the whole thing unnecessarily. But soon, like the others, she has to realize that this very feeling has a power that the demon has no objection to.

Style
The storyline begins about a week after friends Cal, Fox, and Gage, along with the three women, Quinn, Layla, and Cybil have fought their first fight with the demon in the first book of this trilogy. Blood Brothers. Profound conversations and thoughtful thinking characterize the story as well as more or less bloody and violent events. But there are also sunny moments full of family idyll, passion, and joy. The main scene was, compared to the book, relatively short and although great written no question, but not quite as dramatic as I expected. On the other hand, the events and dialogues that have led up to that time, have fascinated me far more than the end of the book itself. And there is also no doubt, that the writing style of this book is doubtless Nora Roberts´s unique style. Easy to read, with a hint of action, tension, and some humor.

Characters
Nora Roberts´s characters convince, are wonderfully profound, and approach well considered their task. The author brings to life figures that express precisely what is most important, even if not everyone has: the love and cohesion of family and friends. They experience normal fears, hopes, joy, and despair just as we do in the real world. Some figures are growing beyond themselves and following this trend has been exciting and very interesting.

Conclusion
I plunged into this second part full of anticipation and anxious expectation and was a bit disappointed in the end. Yet, despite some flaws, Nora Roberts understands how to captivate her readers and proves that she is a source of great emotion, imagination, and delight in reading.

Happy reading

Waiting On Wednesday #92 – The Queen Of Nothing by Holly Black

is a weekly event that was originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. There are a lot of new books coming out each year and some of them catch my attention and will get a spotlight in my Waiting on Wednesday post. While some of them will finally end up here at my place, others won´t. I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday.

Yep, I know, I am late with my post, I know. The past days were filled with some senseless appointments that cost me nothing but time and sitting in front of my laptop and writing was not really an option. To be honest, I´m not very happy with the cover design or the colors. And the soft touch it seems to have isn´t really mine either. Somehow dreamy.

But what matters to me is the story between the two book covers. And while still reading the second book, The Wicked King (yap, it takes me a bit longer than expected) I guess I will be waiting for this book without that much joy - concerning the cover. The story itself, between the two book covers, is a completely different thing. Sure, I am eager to find out how things will end, but on the other hand I DON´T WANT THEM TO END. Does that make sense?

The Queen Of Nothing
Author Holly Black
The Folk Of The Air #3
Publishing Date January 7, 2020
Publisher Little Brown
Format Hardcover
Goodreads

After being pronounced Queen of Faerie and then abruptly exiled by the Wicked King Cardan, Jude finds herself unmoored, the queen of nothing. She spends her time with Vivi and Oak, watches her fair share of reality-television, and does the odd job or two, including trying to convince a cannibalistic faerie from hunter her own in the mortal world. When her twin sister Taryn shows up asking for a favor, Jude jumps at the chance to return to the Faerie world, even if it means facing Cardan, who she loves despite his betrayal. When a dark curse is unveiled, Jude must become the first mortal Queen of Faerie and uncover how to break the curse, or risk upsetting the balance of the whole Faerie world.

Prinzessin Undercover-Enthüllungen by Connie Glynn

We go into the second round with this series. This time without a dust jacket, but not less girly like. Be assured, the novel itself isn´t all sweet, pink, and blue. A lot of action is happening, some romance too and in the end, you will say: wait, what?! Yap, it might seem a bit strange, that an adult reads this series. But why not? We all are having children around us, or most of us do, so why not know what they want to read? And between all the “pure” grown-up books, reading a child´s book can be quite refreshing *smile*

✶✶✶✶

Ellie is a real princess, who wants nothing more than to lead a normal life. Lottie is a normal girl who wants nothing more than to be a princess. So they secretly swap the roles … As they return to Rosewood after the dramatic events of their first year, Lottie and Ellie are hoping for a peaceful term. But strange things are happening at Rosewood. Pupils are being poisoned. Is the threat of secret organization Leviathan grown closer? Lottie and Ellie are determined to find the culprit, but danger could be closer than they think …
Story
Lottie has found her home. Emotionally and in-person with Ellie, her roommate and best friend at Rosewood Hall. And unlike Jamie, who sees his position as a burden for Lottie her new role is everything she ever wanted. But how can you show a person who grew up with the knowledge she still has to get, that having a choice is always better? And when Lottie starts her training with Jamie, she starts to understand, that power is nothing if you can´t defend yourself.

Style
Easy to read, with some action and a beautiful backstory. The author hasn´t changed her writing style or the plot of her story. But this time she put a bit more action into it, gave the whole novel a bit more substance. And that makes this book a reading pleasure. Good, there are a few things in here, I wasn´t so happy with. The end is abrupt, and I am still wondering who the Leviathan leader is. But all the hilarious scenes, witty dialogues and great created figures make this book very entertaining. I laughed so many times, shook my head in disbelief, or was literally amazed at one or the other. It also is a novel, series, where you can´t get rid of the feeling, that every pairing, the princess, and the person who is there to pretend to be her in public, are woven together in love. There are so many scenes where you literally think, that goes beyond a normal friendship. Where you´ve got the feeling that either Lottie or Ellie is gay, or both, perhaps? Not bad, no, not at all. But I am curious if the author will lift that secret sometime in the future of this series.

Characters
I am still not fond of the way how Lottie´s character is. She gets easily distracted, is with her head always in the clouds, and just does not understand why she should always think of others as the worst. But she is smart. It’s the little details she notices when others don´t see what´s going on. She knows by instinct that something is absolutely wrong, but it takes her a bit to sort it all out.

Ellie carries her heart on the tongue. She literally is like an elephant in the china shop. First speak or act, then think. She and Lottie are bonded with each other in more than one way.

Conclusion
A very exciting end. No doubt about that. The combination of school life, action, danger, and so many secrets is wonderful. And when Anastasia and Binah step in and bring their share of elegance, nosiness, and abilities to complete the rest of the group, it starts to get really funny. For every reader who loves princesses and is happy when they aren´t as you usually picture them. And it is for sure, that there will be another part of this series. And hopefully one, that lifts the secret about Leviathan a bit further. It is only sad, that this second book came without a dust jacket.

Happy reading

Becoming by Michelle Obama

This autobiography is one of the very few, you can´t walk by. Michelle Obama was an outstanding First Lady who didn´t ask for that position but filled it with grace, dignity, and her very own way of thinking. She is an icon and probably belongs to the pool of women who are the most-watched and photographed of our time. Respected and loved not only by many Americans but most of the rest of the world as well. And she showed us and still does, that you can be in a powerful position and still act and speak with laureateship and respect for others. I´ve heard so many great things about this book, that I couldn´t wait to get my hands on it. And after reading it, I can say for sure, that I will get my own copy.

✶✶✶✶✶

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America – the first African-American to serve in that role – she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her – from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world´s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it – in her own words and her own terms.
Style
The tone in this book is incredible and exactly what I always heard when I was watching her on a TV show or saw a video clip she had done. For me, it was sure, that I bought the audiobook too. I divided my time reading the print edition mainly at home and listening to the audio while outside. Michelle Obama lets you see insight into her family life, what her parents taught her, how she got raised, and what she always wanted from life. The fact, that she is obviously a control freak – in the most positive way I can imagine – was completely new to me. I never thought that of her. Or that she wasn´t at all happy when her husband went into politics. I remember the TV pictures only too well after her husband became elected president, and she stepped with her family late at night into the limelight and the famous “Yes, we can” sounded through the air.

This autobiography is full of emotions, wisdom, respect, grandeur, humbleness, and style. And with a stunning elementariness. I felt inspired and it was actually very comforting to read that she too, had to struggle and find her own way not only while growing up in the South Side but also when she was First Lady and an entire country and the world was watching her every move or commented what she was wearing and she had to get used to it. I saw a completely different woman in here than the one I noticed during her time as First Lady. In a positive way. Many things she describes here, I knew from the yellow press or had heard of it in the news on CNN or BBC. Things I actually hadn´t seen the way it was later discussed there.

Conclusion
I guess I can say without a doubt, that Michelle Obama was, and still is, one of THE First Ladies, who stand out from the others who were/ are in the same position. Not only because she was the first African-American woman to become First Lady, but also because of the way how she filled and shaped that role with elegance, dignity, and respect for herself and others. There are only three other names I put on the same level as I see her. All former First Ladies. One of them is a late FS. Thank you, Michelle Obama, for this great insight into your life and your years at the White House. It was one great reading pleasure.

Happy reading

Stacking The Shelves #67

It feels like ages, that I´ve written my last STS post. That was last year in June. All those months I had not really something to post in this field, but with everything that has happened since then, particularly during the past two weeks, I feel like I should write one and get my shelves up to date. Or at least, partly.

Bought Books

Sunday Post #24

The last two weeks have been one emotional roller coaster. At first, I got scary news from one of my doctors and left the praxis with a numb feeling. I have no clue how I made it home safe, but at home, I literally broke into tears. The next day I got the news that my father had been admitted to hospital with tachycardia and water in the lungs. He is over seventy and got diagnosed with dementia a few years ago. For him, a shit-situation (his words, not mine).

He had to stay for two weeks, but I managed to be there when he was released and spent the day with him. That was Thursday. Now, we hope, that life will become normal again, or as normal as it can be with his diagnose and condition. Time will tell.

International Women´s Day

Today is International Women´s Day and I can clearly say, that I am proud to be a woman. But being a woman isn´t always easy in the times we´re living in. It seems that we still need to prove that we are worth equal pay, that we are worth getting jobs we often do way better than any male human could. In some parts of the world being a girl or woman means simply, that we are worthless. That we don´t deserve a proper education, not to mention the right to learn to read and write or that we have a voice.

I was raised that my voice was important, that I should use her and that I am a valuable person who has a right to live her own life, no matter if a man is involved in it or not. Years later I found out, that some men were either shocked or felt threatened too much to spend time with me or get involved with me in a personal relationship. I heard things like “You are way too strong for my taste” or “I don´t like that you are having your own opinion”.

Guess, I was around eighteen when I learned the painful way, that I would need a certain kind of man in my life if I was ever going to have a long-lasting and loving relationship. The man, if there was ever one meant for me, needed to be strong. Not in the way that he would have to be a bodybuilder, no, but one with a healthy self-confidence that wouldn´t make him feel less manly only because I was using my brain to decide what to do, when and how. And to be honest, those men are rare.

But enough of that.

Today I got told, that whenever I showed up, I would have a broad smile on my face and that people saw me as sunshine that was lighting up their day. I don´t see myself like that. And if you would ask my family, they wouldn´t agree either. That doesn´t mean that I am playing a role while running my errands or that I am trying to be someone else.

No, not at all.

I think that it is my reaction to other people that makes them think that I am always the smiling and funny girl. Whenever I see the woman behind the counter at the grocery store, I simply must smile – because she is always smiling. Today it was like bathing in warm water, and after the past fourteen days of huge sorrow, it felt literally great to see that smile and get back to normal life and daily routine.

I might not be the perfect woman or as successful as other women are. But I don´t have to be. And that is good. I am the woman who I am, the person who I am because of all the good and bad things that have happened in my life.

I am REAL.

Till next time & happy reading

Ein Traum Für Uns by Marie Force

Some years ago, I discovered the Green Mountain books by Marie Force. Cameron, the daughter of one of the main figures in this new novel, was the main figure back then and I had a great time reading it. Well, this time I wasn´t as thrilled with this series, as I used to be. Something has changed.  The tone isn´t the same anymore, although the author hasn´t changed her writing style.

Ein Traum Für Uns*
by Marie Force
Lost In Love-Die Green Mountain Serie #8
The Butler, Vermont Series #2
Translation Lena Kraus
Original Title Can´t Buy Me Love
Publisher Fischer TB on January 23, 2019
Genre Novel
Pages 277
Format Paperback
Source Publisher
Goodreads
✶✶✶½
Mary Larkin loves her job at the Abbott Green Mountain Country Store and her quiet, well-ordered life. However, it is over when the worldly Patrick Murphy appears on the scene. The attractive billionaire takes Mary´s heart by storm, and the two spend happy days full of emotion and passion. But can Mary trust Patrick´s vows of love? After all, he is known as a bon vivant who has never again had a real relationship since the death of his first wife … (personal translation of the German back text by ©Vi at Inkvotary).
Story
Mary is happy with her life. She loves her job at the Green Mountain Store, the Abbott family runs and feels very satisfied with her daily routine and charity work she does every year. But one tiny moment at her boss´s wedding changes everything. Patrick Murphy is handsome, rich and doesn´t accept no as an answer.

Style
Why in God´s name had the author to use every five seconds the phrase “Sweet Mary”? It was kind of amusing the first time. But then it became annoying. I probably should have counted how many times I´ve read those words in this cheesy and sometimes fanciless novel. But on the other hand, I wasn´t really interested in the real number. My disappointment grew by the second. I definitely expect more from the author. And she can do much better than she did with this novel. No doubt, this book is a fast-paced one. You can read it within a few hours if you want or like. And the language the author uses is simple and easy to read. The style, Marie Force is famous for, shimmered through the pages from time to time.

But what displeased me was a simple fact, that most of the book was sex-scenes. After reading this book I literally knew most of the positions Patrick was having fun with Mary. I soon found myself asking the question, is this an erotic novel or what? And with all the cheesy talk Patrick used to have with Mary, for heaven’s sake, Mrs. Force have mercy with your readers!

Characters
The only thing that kept me from giving this novel a very low rating was the appearance of the Abbott family. And with that, the story got some of the wit, humor, and hilarious scenes and dialogues back, the series once had and was the reason why I became a fan. To see how they act with each other, how they fight, laugh, joke and enjoy each other’s company, and show by living it, what the love and comfort of a family truly mean, was simply everything. I loved every minute of it while reading.

Mary is a woman, who loves her job, her life, and everything that is connected with the Abbotts. But her self-confidence is very low and frankly doesn´t exist at all when it comes to Patrick Murphy.

Conclusion
If you like a novel, that is mainly showing you some hot scenes (very graphic!) and is only about two people who spend time together, this could be your book. As a Marie Force fan, I am slightly disappointed. Sure, it was nice, although not necessary for me, to read about Mary and how she found the love of her life. But I wasn´t really hooked by this story.

Happy reading

Welcome

Vi
I am an avid reader, book blogger, and painter who loves to talk and write about books. A day without one in my hands is a wasted one. Skilled florist with a degree in writing - oh yes, that works! I like many genres, but horror is nothing for me. Here on Inkvotary I will show my love for books, things that move me and what´s going on off the blog - called life. The personal as well as life in general.
