This is one of the books I discovered while spending some time at my local library in what seems now another life. The novel shows what jealousy and hatred can do and that not everyone who has a nice face is acting nicely. And with the main character, the plot becomes more and more thrilling and worth your time.

Deanna Reynolds had it all planned: She’d start out in the newsroom of a small Chicago station, then move up to host her own talk show. When her mentor Angela Perkins leaves for New York, Deanna risks everything for the chance to replace Angela on the air. The network’s sexiest journalist, Finn Riley, admires Deanna’s daring ambition. But soon they are caught up in the bitter backlash of Angela’s revenge—and they must unmask the hidden betrayals of Deanna’s fiercest rival by taking the biggest risk of all…
Story
Deanna Reynolds, an ambitious Topeka journalist, learns the intricacies of talk show business from the star of the broadcaster Angela Perkins at the CBC television station in Chicago in addition to her actual job as a news reporter. While Angela Perkins built her career cold and calculating, and by doing you-do-me-a-favor-and-I-keep-your-secret-for-me, Deanna works with her naturalness and sympathy and the right feeling for business upwards.  However, when she declines Angela´s offer to go to New York and work as her producer, Angela´s apparent friendship and willingness to help translates into boundless envy, hatred of the aspiring competitor, and burning jealousy. With the famous reporter Finn Riley at her side, Deanna persistently realizes her ideas and concepts and pursues her path purposefully, which will soon be paved not only with increasing ratings and private happiness but also with mysterious letters from a fan and corpses.

Style
Well researched, precise, and simple but effective, Nora Roberts has told the story of several characters, using the world of news and the economic situation in the United States as a background. In a gripping and at the same time emotionally entertaining way, the author combines the reality of hectic reporter´s everyday life and what is happening in the world with fantasy, into exiting and sometimes a very passionate story that she skillfully and appropriately staged.

Characters
Subtle and scary at the same time, Nora Roberts shows her characters to the reader, and is as diverse and emotional as it is unique. The characters are believable and convincing due to all the emotions shown, without appearing overloaded. Deanna lies in front of the reader like an open book. Angela shows a completely opposite world behind the façade of the perfect TV star and yet the beast always stays with it. Jeff is pure harmony but at the same time spookily calm. Flinn is always and everywhere the professional, who does his job, uses people and remains a dream of a man with rough edges.

Conclusion
A novel full of suspense, varied reading pleasure, and a dash of passion combined with the fascinating insight into the everyday life of TV news anchors and reporters, in which the reader gets his money´s worth.

Happy reading

Nora Roberts, born in Silver Spring, Maryland, is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels. During the now-famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981. Having spent her life surrounded by men, Ms. Roberts has a fairly good view of the workings of the male mind, which is a constant delight to her readers. It was, she’s been quoted as saying, a choice between figuring men out or running away screaming. Nora is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry. Recently The New Yorker called her “America’s favorite novelist.” She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb.
