To be honest, writing this review was not easy. I had my trouble to find the right words to describe the emotions I had while reading this novel. And even after I was done with the book, nothing seemed to be appropriate. I am still overwhelmed by all the blood, cruelty, and the battles that have taken place in the story. Was it really necessary to show all this? Maybe yes, maybe no. But the result is a novel that entertains you very well and that will have some sort of impact on you. One way or the other.

Story
Zélie and Amari seem to be on two different sides. They once swore to each other to be friends for life and that nothing, absolutely nothing would be able to tear them apart. The moment Amari´s brother and mother are back and fighting to keep the throne and the monarchy alive, Zélie doubts that what she wants is the same Amari wants. Too different are their ways of achieving peace and their ways of thinking and honoring traditions. But when the monarchy shows its real power and Zélie is forced to chose too, Amari no longer seems to fight for the same cause. And Zélie discovers how real magic and power are built.
Style
After the first few chapters, I had the impression that most of the scenes had already happened in the first part, Children of Blood and Bone. Fight scenes, camp scenes, town scenes, temple scenes, and a lot of blood, cruelty, and senseless violence. The only difference was in the different environments and the new characters that appeared.
Tomi Adeyemi has created her world of Orisha in a clear, gentle tone. Every word is well placed, every scene well created, and nothing happens without a reason. Despite the feeling, that you read that before in book one. The journey Zélie is on, is again full of tragedy, hope, hate, loss, and yet you can see that she isn´t willing to give up. Yes, she and Amari don´t seem to be on the same side anymore, if ever, with Amari doing things she never thought she could or would do. After all, she was born and raised to save the kingdom no matter what price. And believe me, she´s willing to pay the ultimate price to save her heritage. If that means betraying the people and the only person who saved her from her father, so be it.
Characters
The author lets her figures suffer without end. Some figures die a brutal death and one figure manipulates her own flesh and blood to get what she wants. Until the end, I couldn´t figure out Amari. Yes, she has changed a lot. The former helpless young princess has turned into a princess who wants nothing more than to end the battles and fights and bring peace to her people and the maji. But the way how she tries to achieve that left me speechless and with a bad feeling. And to be honest, I am not sure whether to like her and her new way or not. Amari does a lot of things here I can´t agree with. No matter what she does, she and Zélie longer seem to be on the same side.
And Zélie? Her development throughout the entire story is brilliant. She fights for what she believes in, knows, and respects the rules and traditions of her people and the land she lives on. She wants the same things as Amari but is not as blind and trustful as the princess. And that is what gives the book a bit of a special something. At least between the two young women.
Conclusion
Although I enjoyed reading this book it wasn´t able to thrill me the way I had hoped it would or as the previous book has managed to do. And I don´t share the hype and overall excitement other readers have expressed about it. Sadly. Oh yes, there are a lot of great scenes here, and the characters are well created too. But unfortunately, I missed that certain something here …

Nach den ersten Kapiteln hatte ich den Eindruck, dass die meisten Szenen bereits im ersten Teil Children of Blood and Bone-Goldener Zorn, passiert sind. Kampfszenen, Lagerszenen, Stadtszenen, Tempelszenen und viel Blut, Grausamkeit und sinnlose Gewalt. Der einzige Unterschied bestand in der anderen Umgebung und den neuen Figuren, die auftauchten.
Tomi Adeyemi hat ihre Welt von Orisha in einem klaren, sanften Tonfall erschaffen. Jedes Wort ist gut gewählt, jede Szene gut kreiert und nichts passiert ohne Grund. Trotz des Gefühls, dass man das bereits im Vorgängerband gelesen hat. Die Reise, auf der Zélie ist, ist wieder voller Tragödien, Hoffnung, Hass, Verlust und dennoch kann man sehen, dass sie nicht bereit ist aufzugeben. Ja, sie und Amari scheinen nicht mehr auf der gleichen Seite zu sein, wenn überhaupt, wenn Amari Dinge tut, von denen sie nie gedacht hätte, dass sie sie tun könnte oder würde. Immerhin wurde sie geboren und dazu erzogen, das Königreich zu bewahren, egal zu welchem Preis. Und glaubt mir, sie ist bereit, den ultimativen Preis zu zahlen, um ihr Erbe zu retten. Wenn das bedeutet, die Menschen und die einzige Person zu verraten, die sie vor ihrem Vater gerettet hat, dann sei es so.
Charaktere
Die Autorin lässt ihre Figuren ohne Ende leiden. Einige Figuren sterben eines brutalen Todes und eine Figur manipuliert ihr eigenes Fleisch und Blut, um zu bekommen, was sie will. Bis zum Ende konnte ich Amari nicht durchschauen. Ja, sie hat sich sehr verändert. Die ehemalige hilflose junge Prinzessin hat sich in eine Prinzessin verwandelt, die nichts weiterwill, als die Schlachten und Kämpfe zu beenden und ihrem Volk und den Maji Frieden zu bringen. Aber die Art und Weise, wie sie das versucht, hat mich sprachlos gemacht und mit einem schlechten Gefühl zurückgelassen. Und um ehrlich zu sein, bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob ich sie und ihren neuen Weg mögen soll oder nicht. Amari macht hier viele Dinge, denen ich nicht zustimmen kann. Egal, was sie tut, sie und Zélie scheinen nicht mehr auf der gleichen Seite zu sein.
Und Zélie? Ihre Entwicklung während der gesamten Geschichte ist brillant. Sie kämpft für das, woran sie glaubt, kennt und respektiert die Regeln und Traditionen ihres Volkes und des Landes, auf dem sie lebt. Sie will das Gleiche wie Amari, ist aber nicht so blind und vertrauensvoll wie die Prinzessin. Und genau das gibt dem Buch etwas Besonderes. Zumindest zwischen den beiden jungen Frauen.
Resultat
Obwohl ich dieses Buch gerne gelesen habe, konnte es mich nicht so begeistern, wie ich es mir erhofft hatte oder wie es das vorherige Buch geschafft hat. Und ich teile nicht den Hype und die allgemeine Aufregung, die andere Leser darüber geäußert haben. Traurigerweise. Oh ja, hier gibt es viele großartige Szenen, und die Figuren sind auch gut kreiert. Aber das gewisse Etwas fehlte mir hier leider…
