Waiting On Wednesday #44 – Tower Of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This meme is a place that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating with pure joy. For whatever reason Jill is not blogging since August 2016 but her meme is still going on. Hope everything is ok and she will be back soon! Until then, I am joining Tressa at Wishful Endings and her meme Can´t-Wait Wednesday!

Okay, I haven´t read the ToG novels in a while and it will be in no time, that this book I picked for this week WoW will come out, but nonetheless, I am looking very much forward to it. The last book I finished was Heir of Fire. Yes, I am a bit behind, and it bothers me, but life got in the way and so I guess I´ll have to re-read the third one and a bit catching up to do to get back in the loop with the plot and to fill the space until the next book about Aelin gets published *smile*

And, as I know me,  I could probably end up reading them all at once only to find myself then in the horrible hole while waiting for the next book to come out *lol* But who cares anyway, it is THE THRONE OF GLASS series we´re talking about, and so far, Sarah J. Maas has never disappointed me. So every time I have to wait for another book to come out, it was worth it!

Tower Of Dawn
Author Sarah J. Maas

Publisher Bloomsbury
Format Hardcover

Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the Captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered since his men were slaughtered, since the King of Adarlan spared him from killing a blow, but left his body broken. His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica – the stronghold of the southern continent´s mighty empire. And with war looming over Dorian and Aelin back home, their survival might lie with Chaol and Nesryn convincing its rulers to ally with them. But what they discover in Antica will change them both – and be more vital to saving Erilea than they could have imagined.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

Roar by Cora Carmack

I am thrilled – Cora Carmack you´ve done a TERRIFIC JOB! Holy moly this novel has it all: Emotions, great pictures, beautiful language, and a heroine who rocks. I fell in love with the US cover the moment I saw it. And the cover of the German edition is as beautiful as the original one. You will see it, if you keep reading *smile* I simply had to have it and was very nervous about getting it because it turned out that this book was not only a hit on the market but also the most wanted and I was kind of late with my request – and summertime equal vacation time in addition.

In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies within those who control them. Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world´s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora´s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She´s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she´s yet to show any trace of the magic she´ll need to protect her people. To keep her secret and save her crown, Auroa´s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He´ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks – storm magic. And the people selling it? They´re not Stormling. They´re storm hunters. Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there´s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage. She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she´s brave enough. Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.
Story
Aurora never really saw the outside world. Occasionally when she was riding her horse Honey, yes, but not how her people really live. Their sorrows are new to her although her mother the queen takes with her magic care of them. But all the dark places in her city she´s never seen with her own eyes. And she never knew that there are many more things in life. Some she never thought possible.

Style
The author has an incredibly beautiful way of using words, building scenes, dialogues, and showing the setting of her novel. Tornados, storms, thunder and so much more brings an atmosphere alive that I´ve rarely seen in other fantasy books. Cora Carmack uses her words with style, there is sometimes poetry to find in the pages that give everything the special something. And the way how she combines her figures, the magic, and the weather is simply great. No loud tones even in the moments when a tornado is in a scene. But no matter what Aurora does, says, or feels, you are haunted and touched by it in a very sensitive way.

Characters
Though Aurora has never really seen or discovered the world outside the palace, she is eager to find out more about it. Yes, her sense of inferiority is huge, but that doesn´t hold her back from making her plan become reality and do what she believes is best for her kingdom and her people. She is a beauty but doesn´t see herself that way. And she develops an incredible stubborn will to get what she wants. A real fighter I might say. And she can be badass if necessary. I was thrilled by her from page one and the more I read about her, the more I watched her change, become mature and reach out for her dreams the more I had the feeling that she was something special. Not only in the way she acted but also in the way she feels and thinks. Being brutal isn´t always the answer to everything and her instincts prove that to her again and again.

Conclusion
A great novel. Full of emotions, beautiful scenes, great characters, and a plot that is not only fantasy and magic but so much more. Highly recommended.

Happy reading

Sag Kein Wort by Raphael Montes

Perfect Days, as the English edition is called, has a cover that fits totally. You can see it at the bottom of my review. But it was the cover of the German edition, that got me. Dark, fascinating, and with a hint of danger. A psychological thriller is exactly what you will get. A twisted, dark, dusky, and very bloody piece of work with some unexpected turns and two main figures where I am still not sure which of them was more psychic. In fact, this thriller contains very graphic scenes and is so morbid and fucked up when it comes to his two protagonists, that you should read this only if you are willing to get your nerves and even your stomach turned upside down.

✶✶✶✶✶

Téo is a loner. He lives with his paraplegic mother and her dog in Rio de Janeiro, he doesn´t have many friends, and the only time he feels honest human emotion is in the presence of his medical school cadaver – that is, until he meets Clarice. She´s almost his exact opposite: exotic, spontaneous, unafraid to speak her mind. An aspiring screenwriter, she´s working on a screenplay called Perfect Days about three friends who go on a road trip across Brazil in search of romance. Téo is obsessed. He begins to stalk her, first following her to her university, then to her home, and when she ultimately rejects him, he kidnaps her and they embark upon their very own twisted odyssey across Brazil, tracing the same route outlines in her screenplay. Through it all, Téo is certain that time is all he needs to prove to Clarice that they are made for each other. That time is all he needs to make her fall in love with him. But as the journey progresses, he digs himself deeper and deeper into a pit that he can´t get out of, stopping at nothing to ensure that no one gets in the way of their life together.
Story
Téo loves to talk to Gertrudes. An old woman he loves dearly – and which is a dead body in the morgue. But when he meets Clarice for the first time, he knows that she is the one. His only problem: Clarice isn´t feeling the same for him. The way she treats him is only a fun game for her, but nothing serious. For Téo it is real. Very real. And his mind comes up with a plan to make her his. Entirely.

Style
Raphael Montes writes clear, to the point and every word is used as a weapon. The contrast between the elegance of his writing and that what happens is sharp like a knife and yet kind of soft. The author doesn´t need to use loud tones. He gets you in a sneaky way and shocks you out of the blue. There are scenes that are so bloody, so gloomy and so SICK that it makes you feel bad. The one with Breno and the knife was appalling and it took me some moments to realize what just had happened. And what Téo does towards the end to Clarice is barbaric, abnormal, unnatural and simply forbidding that I can only suggest to every interested reader – yes, I say it again: if you aren´t in for brutality, blood and everything that a sick mind can come up with, you better don´t touch this book!

The story is oppressive, intense, and shows you in a very elegant and yet scary way that one lie is forcing another and that Téo is the master of the game when it comes to it. He lies to everyone about anything. But never gets caught … The way how he does everything, how he comes up with all his ideas, the moments when he starts to tell you that he isn´t the monster you think he is – all that is brought to you in a twisted but classy way.

Characters
Holy hell, how can a man express his love to a woman like that? But the moment, when Clarice starts acting, he is pissed, angry, and feels totally insulted and hurt. Let me be straight. Téo is a monster. Pure evil. In every meaning of those words. Don´t let yourself get fooled by him. He is a genius, a mind that doesn´t work the way that of normal human works. His thoughts are devastating gross and so murderous – I haven´t seen anything like him in a male character before. Oh, yes, to the outside he acts like a nice guy who can´t harm a fly. But in his mind …

The second I read the scene with the butterfly I thought OH NO! Don´t tell me that this is what´ll be going to happen over the next pages. A scene not only very symbolic but threatening and cold-blooded as well. Well, what can I say … It got a lot worse.

Téo isn´t capable of feeling anything. Emotions are something he doesn´t understand. There is nothing close to it inside him. At least not the way what you and I call normal. And if he shows any emotion, he is faking it. Playing them out in a perfect way. The fact that Clarice isn´t fond of him and sees right through him drives him mad. His plan, to show her what´s best for her, is born in an instant, and in the end, I couldn´t believe that the author gave him what he wanted. In a way, I only felt bizarre about it. No woman should have to end up like Clarice did.

Conclusion
No doubt, the author knows how to get into his reader´s mind. How to twist up things and presents them in a very elegant and fascinating but morbid way. The psychological finesse in Perfect Days is phenomenal brilliant. I didn´t see it coming and had high hopes for Clarice that got brutally crushed in the end. It took me a night of sleep and time doing anything but reading or thinking about this shocking book and still, I am not quite sure how I feel about it. So, yes, the author and his twisted work of psychological thriller still have its impact on me. None I like, but it is there. No book I will read a second time and I am not sure if I will ever read a book like this again.

Happy reading

Follow Friday #27 – Highlight August 2017

Launched by Sonja of A Bookshelf Full Of Sunshine, continued by FiktiveWelten with a new logo. The blog action is for lively communication between bloggers, a good network, and should be fun. Duration of the question: Friday to Thursday. Rules. No registration required. This week the FF is all about our book highlight for August. I had it before and I have it again. Two books I can´t decide which one I want to highlight, so I give both the honor. Different genres though, but each very good in their own way.

My first highlight is Wild One by Nacho Figueras and Jessica Whitman. The perfect romance for all those who just want to chill out and enjoy themselves. Emotions are running high in this book about polo, big feelings, and the one true love.

My other choice is Sag Kein Wort by Raphael Montes. A barbaric psychological thriller with two very fucked up main figures. It is published in English Perfect Days.

What was your reading highlight during August?

Leave Me by Gayle Forman

After I had enjoyed her Young Adult novels so much, I was eager to see how an adult novel written by the author would be. I don´t know what I´ve expected of this novel, but I am sure that it wasn´t what I got in the end. And I must say that I am with mixed feelings after I´ve finished this novel.

Leave Me*
by Gayle Forman
Publisher Algonquin Books on September 6, 2016
Genre Novel
Pages 352
Format Hardcover

✶✶✶½

Surprised to discover that her recuperation seems to be an imposition on those who rely on her, Maribeth does the unthinkable: she packs a bag and leaves. But, as is often the case, once we get where we´re going we see our lives from a different perspective. Far from the demands of family and career and with the help of liberating new friendships, Maribeth is able to own up to secrets she has been keeping from herself and those she loves.
Story
Maribeth suffers a heart attack and didn´t even realize it. Even when her doctor during a routine exam tells her that she is still suffering from it, she doesn´t really believe it. But then things go south and from one moment to the next she is in a position where she can´t do anything but to rely on her husband and family – only to find out that she can´t. Because Jason is no help at all and while she is supposed to recover and do nothing but lying in bed and heal, her husband and mother expect her to go back to the usual routine. Something Maribeth´s body and soul aren´t able to do.

Style
The more I´ve read this novel, the more I got speechless. But not in a good way. Maribeth is working full-time, raising twins, runs the household, and everything that comes with that, and what does her husband when she asks him to be a darling and cook for once dinner for his kids because she won´t make it in time? He literally reacts with incomprehension and tells her to order pizza! Holy hell if that would have been my husband I would have told him something. And I don´t have nice words in mind by saying that.

Besides that, I am not sure if I will read another adult book written by the author. Don´t get me wrong. She writes in a sensitive yet blunt way. And the way how she shows what fear and the unexpected happening can do to a family’s routine is written in a very nice way. But I missed something. Maybe she was too serious about everything. Yes, I know that suffering a heart attack is nothing easy or something you are making jokes about. And I am well aware, that it is never easy for a family, a husband, or kids when something bad happens to the mother or any other family member. But I know from her other books, that she can write about serious things with the touch of an easy tone in it. And that was exactly what I missed here a bit.

Characters
Gayle Forman created with Maribeth and Jason figures where I am not sure whether to laugh or shake my head over their behavior. She is for sure a completely overworked mother with a stressful job and a husband at her side who won´t lift a finger unless she threatens him with a gun. And her mother takes only care about her grandchildren if she gets the guarantee that she can be the one where everything is laughter and fun and a good time. But don´t ask that woman to put the used glasses into the dishwasher. Oh no. Jesus! No doubt, the author brought some characters together where some of her readers will probably have a hard time getting warm with. I am, no doubt here, one of them. I am not a man-hater or a feminist, but I could have thrown Jason during some scenes with pleasure against a wall. Fear is something that can grip any of us, and that is nothing I am complaining about. But his reaction to everything? A no-go.

Conclusion
I am sure, some will love this novel, others won´t. I am somewhere in between. Leave Me is written in a beautiful way, with sensitivity and shows what fear can do to all of us. On the other hand, I am still in kind of a shock about the husband´s behavior and that the main figure had to do such a step to heal and to help herself and her family. And the fact that one big question the author left unanswered didn´t make it any better. Sad, but after a very good start, this novel turned, at least for me, into average. Sad, really sad.

Happy reading

Die Goldene Stadt by Sabrina Janesch

Guess you could translate the title The Golden Town. A book about Peru, the Inca, and their legendary gold and a man who never got his historic fame for discovering Machu Picchu first. Sounds confusing and interesting altogether? Right, it does. And exactly that was the reason for me, why I wanted to read this book. The excerpt I got to read up-front sounded so unusual, so unique, that I got very interested and asked for it.

“How do you know it´s El Dorado when you find it?”, Singer asked abruptly. Berns let his papaya sink. Pepe looked now. Amusement rose in Berns. This question had never occurred to him; He was more than certain that the lost city of the Inca would tell him immediately and unequivocally. “I´ll see it”, Berns answered. El Dorado was built by people like me. That´s why people like me will find it.” (personal translation by ©Vi at Inkvotary)
Story
Berns grew up with a huge fantasy. Where others only saw a plain field, river, or mountain, he always thought about what if. But in his family, a dreamlike fantasy wasn´t the best thing to have. But Berns was smart. Learning was easy for him, his mind eager to learn everything new and historic. And the Inka was his big passion. And one day, when he was supposed to start his military career, he started the adventure of his life instead. Peru.

Style
While reading the excerpt I was astonished over the unusual style the author had. There were pictures among the text. And many details were brought to the reader´s attention in an old language, with a huge variety of words and in a style, that reminded me very much of some books I had to read during my time at school. Interesting. Soon my thrill and interest turned into something far less thrilled and interested. There are so many pages where I got to read stuff I was not interested in and where I thought that was not necessary for the story at all, should have been left out. Other pages were a real hit. Very entertaining, giving my fantasy great pictures and a sense of how life back then was.

Most of this story is easy to understand. Some parts aren´t unless you are familiar with the topic when it comes to Sailing, ships in general, or the military. Well, I am not one of those people and the author didn´t bother to give her readers an explanation in the following text. And there are some scenes where you read total kitschy stuff, and where I thought: Oh please! Because it didn´t fit into the rest. Seemed completely out of line.

Characters
There isn´t much to say about the figures. August Rudolph Berns is at the beginning of this book a boy I liked. His huge fantasy, how he thought and felt about others were quite impressive. Later he turned into a liar, a man who is dominated by his dream to find the legendary Inka gold and who does everything – even betraying others – to achieve it. Not the man I would want near me. Having big dreams and living for it is one thing if you´re doing it in a nice and honest way. But cheating, lying, and even risking lives for it, isn´t what I call good.

Conclusion
Less would have been more here. No doubt, the author has done her research and put her heart into this book. But I still don´t know whether this was a historical novel with some adventurer genre in it or a pure adventurer thing with way too many historical details. Despite that, I guess that every reader who loves to dig into a very detailed novel with almost no profoundness will have his fun with it. For me, it was sometimes real torture and in the end around average. Sorry, but it is the way how I feel about it.

Happy reading

Die Wellington Saga - Verführung by Nacho Figueras & Jessica Whitman

Wild One, its original title, is again full of emotions, wonderful scenes, and heart. I liked it even better than the first one, and that tells you something. My joy was immense when I saw that this novel was on its way to my place. If you know the first book then you do know that with this series is a light one. Yes, there are some small dramas in it, but nothing that brings a heaviness into the novel.

Kat Parker thought she´d finally escaped being known as the housekeeper´s daughter in the class-obsessed polo town of Wellington, FL. With her first blockbuster screenplay, she´d become the Hollywood It girl – until with one flop suddenly she wasn´t. Heading home is her only option. For Sebastian, everything in life has always come easily – wealth, sports, women. But the perennial party life is starting to feel a bit stale. Especially after meeting Kat. Her easy laughter and candid attitude make him aspire something more meaningful for the first time in his life. As Sebastian tells Kat stories of his grandmother Victoria, a woman who could be dripping in diamonds one moment and tearing up the polo field the next, Kat´s inspiration fires and soon the pair are back in Hollywood, working on a film together that could make or break both of their careers. And though the chemistry between the two is building, the film´s irresistible star has other ideas …
Story
Kat runs out of money. No job, no money, and Hollywood is expensive. She needs to take a time out to get back to what she loves: writing screenplays. But how to do that when you don´t have good ideas? When she meets Sebastian again she discovers a world besides the glamour, the money, and all the perfect beauty and knows right away that this is her chance.

Style
Wild One is wilder and in a bit darker tone written as the first book. But in a good way. There is the since years brewing rivalry between Sebastian and his elder brother. The roots for that lay in their childhood. And this novel tells us why. The scene where both go back to an old game they used to play as kids isn´t only very beautiful written but shows deep emotions you´d never expect to find in a novel like this. Don´t get me wrong, Wild One is the perfect read for the beach, balcony, or wherever you like to relax because besides all the dark and wild this book is exactly that: relaxing. An easy read where you don´t have to think. The language is pure melody and not like all the other novels mostly show. You can feel the passion that is behind every polo scene and that the author knows exactly what he´s talking about.

Characters
Kat is a tough cookie. She knows what she wants and she does everything to achieve it. That scene where she gets so angry over that producer´s behavior? Priceless! Beauty by nature she knows what men see when they look at her. And it bothers her. She wants to be seen and recognized for her work, and her work only. Not by how she looks. Easier said than done when she couldn´t land a real job after the fall out of her last screenplay. But when her family calls and needs help, she´s there. Remembering her childhood, meeting old friends and with Sebastian a man who is everything she´s not very fond of. But he touches a nerve deep inside her. And soon, keeping her fingers off of him is an undoable thing.

Conclusion
I read it in one single swoop. Could barely lay it aside to do something else. Wild One is emotion, passion, romance, and feelings all over the place. If you read the first book already, then this will be another thrill for you. And to be honest, during one scene I had tears running down my cheeks. Yep, happens to me too. For a nice summer day or night, the perfect book.

Waiting On Wednesday #43 – Licht In Tiefer Nacht (Come Sundown) by Nora Roberts

is a weekly event originally hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

I already posted a WoW for the US edition, and now the German edition will come out in a few weeks and I am looking forward to it – and thought why not do another for that edition too?Sometimes, I just have to have both editions and probably will end up reading both editions. It can be quite interesting to see what the translator did with the original novel. If something is missing or got cut out due to the translation. You never know …

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers who want to ride horses in the apple-crisp air or couples holding weddings under the wide-open sky. A little more than thirty thousand acres, it is home to four generations – and behind the scenes, Bodine Longbow does all she can to keep things running with the help of her siblings, the staff, and the new hire, Callen Skinner. But not far away, an aunt Bodine has never met lives in her own twisted version of a family, one no one knows about, one she never chose. Year ago, Alice was a rebellious eighteen-year-old who ran off looking for freedom and adventure. Now she cowers in fear, rarely seeing the sunlight, her mind shattered by a man who views her – and her offspring – as his rightful property. The Longbows don´t talk about Alice anymore. Many quietly presume that she is long dead. Then a young bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow. It´s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them, and it will not be the only murder to unnerve this peaceful town. But the greatest shock is yet to come when Alice returns – and the threat that follows in her wake will test the bonds that hold Bodine to this place and these people, and thrust her into a darkness she could never have imagined.

And what are you waiting for? Let me know your thoughts about this one or leave me the link to your WoW and I check it out.

The Heart Of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson

Not as good as the first book, but worth your time anyway. And a well-written sequel. There is drama in it, blood, cruelty and you´ll find friendship, loyalty, romance, and what it means when an entire nation likes you. When I saw that the second book´s cover would be the same as the original edition shows, I was quite relieved. And what a wonderful story it contains. Wanna know more? Then keep reading *smile*

✶✶✶✶

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save her life, Lia´s erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar´s interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen. Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: There´s Rafe, who lied to Lia but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be barbarians. Now that she lives among them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country … and her own destiny.
Story
Lia is now in Vendan and at the whim and will of the Komizar and his plans. His word is her command – at least that´s his wish. But Lia wouldn´t be Lia if she would oblige to him. She does, in a certain way, yes, but not if it doesn´t fit her own plans. All she wants is to live a free life, to decide what she wants to do when she wants to do it. Her gift is something she learned to live with. She still can´t really control it, but bit by bit she finds out to trust her gift and to read its signs.

Style
Yes, this second book of the Remnant Chronicles wasn´t as much fun as I had with the first book. But life in the Sanctum is not boring at all. Danger, cruelty, blood, and many intrigue men and women who only wait to do whatever it takes to reach their own goal – all that I found in this novel. And an end I am still thinking WTF?! Good, I am more than happy with what happened to the Komizar. I saw it long coming what Lia only started seeing when it was almost too late for her. But who will be the evil one in the next book? And what had happened with Kaden?

The fact, that I knew now during every chapter who the one was telling me the story, was a nice turn for the better. But I kind of missed it guessing who is now talking to me. And to see what Pauline was doing while Lia was fighting to stay alive in Vendan, was a nice addition to the main story.

Characters
The fight between Rafe and Kaden over Lia is as fresh as you can imagine and yet not new. Both lie, both fight for her love (and no, I am not telling who might win or already has her love – go and find that out for yourself) and both have their own plans. Whilst Kaden tries to keep Lia away from the Komizar´s greedy hands, Rafe does everything to make sure that the Komizar believes every word he says. Not easy when the hunger for more power, more fortune, and other things is guiding the mind of a ruthless and cold-blooded man. And Aster, she is almost the best thing that happens to Lia in this book. What a great girl.

Conclusion
In the end, I was shocked, happy, and couldn´t believe what I just had read. That end, oh my! Many questions got answered, many new ones popped up and above all the big one: What about Kaden? I am so curious to find out how this all ends. Read.

Happy reading

Kopf Aus, Herz An by Jo Watson

A nice cover that caught my attention in the literal last minute. When I placed my application for it, I never thought that I would get lucky. As much as I like the cover of the German edition, but the novel itself turned out to be a nice story with an annoying main character. Many stereotypes were brought up and gave the novel after some chapters a touch that wasn´t really mine.

Lilly's worst nightmare becomes true when her fiancé leaves her in front of the wedding ceremony. But instead of putting her head in the sand, she decides to pursue the honeymoon to Thailand anyway - alone. Still in the plane, she meets the attractive Damien, who with his tattoos and the spontaneous nature is actually exactly the kind man, around Lilly would otherwise make a large bow. But now that there's nothing she holds back, she lets her take her on a journey - a journey that shows her what it means to listen to his heart and not to his head.
Story
Lilly feels as if her world is completely out of control. Why did Michael what he did to her? And why can´t she have what every other woman seems to have? Is she really asking for too much when it comes to her life, being happy, and have a family of her own? After some tears and a lonely night that was supposed to be her wedding night, she flies to Thailand and starts her honeymoon – alone. And meets a man who is the total opposite of those men she usually wants. Tattoos, dark eyes, and not at all well-groomed.

Style
Sometimes the plot seemed not really thought through. Some things didn´t convince me, others looked like they were far-fetched and some figures showed a behavior where I was asking myself if that is typical for South Africa or only the authors own weird fantasy. The idea, to have a Burning Moon party set on a location that isn´t easy access is great, no doubt. And it was fantastic to read what Lilly and Damien had to do and where to go to be finally able to enjoy that party. My mind was full of gorgeous pictures and with things, I never thought that would possible. But how the main figure acted, how she behaved, and how she showed that she had nothing really learned even after all those changes she went through, that wasn´t as fun or humorous as probably intended by the author. Sorry, but what young woman that age makes everything a drama, freaks out when life isn´t playing out the way she wants it in that way Lilly does and who has such a low if none existing self-confidence?

Life isn´t perfect. Not predictable and for sure not all sunshine and glitter. Good, Glitter is the least of Lilly´s concerns, but I am still wondering why she was acting the way she was during the entire book.

Characters
After some pages, I was literally freaking out – and not in a good way! Lilly is way too much of everything. She panics whenever she has the chance to, is prude, uptight and her thoughts are so out of control. Whenever she comes into a situation she hasn´t planned for her life or which isn´t running the way she had imagined or thought she starts to create the absolutely worst-case scenario. That is, if it happens only once, a hilarious thing for the reader, but here it was way too exaggerated.

And why on earth has a young woman, barely twenty-five to be married? What is the reason behind all this? A drama queen is nothing compared to Lilly. Don´t get me wrong, I am not against marriage, not at all. But here it seemed completely out of place. And with the reasons the author gives during the ongoing plot, it seems more and more awkward.

Damien is the complete opposite of Lilly. He has tattoos, looks like he could use a bath, does what he wants and when he wants it and is so relaxed and in peace with himself – enviable. And how he handles Lilly´s reactions to everything he suggests, does or says is really remarkable. I liked him from the start.

Conclusion
I liked the writing style the author showed. And the novel started as a wonderful story with the main figure that seemed to be a bit out of her usual comfort zone. But then the novel turned into something extreme in every possible way. Was this a slapstick comedy and I didn´t see that? Sad, but I guess it will take a while before I read another book by the author, if ever.
